This is a really bad attack. The attacker is requesting a file from thousands of spoofed IP addresses. We're working to figure out how to deal with it and are facing being blown off the net because of it. Until the person stops.

I don't understand why someone would want to do something like that. Are they just evil? Do they even have something to gain? I hope they get caught and raped while in jail.

Yeah, really what is to gain by disabling a site such as this. The site isn't large enough that whoever is doing it will get some cred for doing something. Sorry Geoff tough break. Hope things get cleared up.

Only way I can get into the forums is with the button at the top of the home page. The drag-down on the left just refreshes the home page, and all drag-downs within each forum take you BACK to the home page. I hereby petition the government to give all convicted hackers the death sentence.

EDIT: Never mind. The drag-down is working again.

There has been talk recently of Middle Eastern hacker groups planning various attacks on European and American websites - I wonder if this was a test of some sort? I also wonder what other sites faced similar problems?

Hmmmmm.... Interesting that you didn't post in this thread until AFTER the threat has passed, and you immediately come in to lay down a smoke screen.

Your IP has been logged, sir!

Can I play that number in the lottery? I've never played before but it looks promising.

Or maybe that was on your fortune cookie message?

I know that the Department of Defense has a special team that constantly monitors for unusual 'Net activity that threatens our national security. They may be monitoring a especially a possible attack on the computers that control our stock exchanges....

This is an interesting read on one DOS attack that might give you an idea of what they are and how bad they can be:

This is a good read. Explains the whole thing quite well. The thing I keep trying to figure out is - who did we piss off and how? I mean what the heck has DVD Talk done to deserve someone trying to kick us off the net.

I wish they'd just stop so we can get back to the business of talkin' DVDs

the section on the fbi from that page is pretty sad.

sucks if the server and databse has to be rebuilt - more downtime.

although the site is working better today.

I suspect that rave review of this week's release of Charles in Charge: Season I, may not have sat well with certain individuals.

Sorry...I know I'm not funny. I got nothin. I stink.

Really the only people you could piss off would be the members who got banned.
