Some of the largest amount of anti-American sentiment outside the Middle East comes from France. I think this accounts for some of the attitudes concerning the French IMO.
As far as saying that "bashing groups = racist", where does this stop? Should people not be able to poke fun at NASCAR fans? Or Trekkies? How about hippies or yuppies? Or Democrats or Republicans? Or Celine Dion fans, even? Do we have to love every group or subgroup of society?
