Forum VERY slow currently

Has been extremely slow this morning (from 10-10:30 EST anyway).

GeoffK 06-06-05 09:48 AM

After an extremely serious hacker attack late last week we had to move all of DVD Talk's servers to new servers. So there may still be issues/optimizations which need to be addressed.

GeoffK 06-06-05 09:50 AM

Please do keep us update though when you experience issues.

Josh H 06-06-05 09:53 AM

Thanks for the update Geoff, sorry to hear about the hacker attack. Some people really need to get lives.

Site is still very slow for me.

AGuyNamedMike 06-06-05 09:55 AM

Glad and sorry to hear I'm not the only one.

Just to be helpful, I'll post a traceroute:

I don't think it's a network issue, i think it's a server issue

Josh H 06-06-05 10:07 AM

Back to normal now.

GeoffK 06-06-05 10:07 AM

Looks like it was an issue with a setting in Apache.

The site is now on new servers with an updated OS so hopefully the end result will be better performance, not worse :)

The Infidel 06-15-05 03:43 AM

I'm still noticing the site moving very slow on a daily basis for the last couple weeks. It comes and it goes at different periods throughout the day.

silver_yummies 06-15-05 04:04 AM

ya it was very slow just a bit ago for a good five minutes

Josh H 06-15-05 12:09 PM

Yep, getting so periodic slowness today and yesterday as well.

But nothing like when I posted the thread where it was super slow all the time for several hours.

Just seems to hit a "snag" loading a thread every now and then. Then jumps back to normal.

eedoon 06-16-05 02:24 AM

It's slow on mine too. Also often times the page just stop loading before it was finished. Kinda frustrating, but at least it's not my ISP this time. :)

The Infidel 06-16-05 01:00 PM

It's got to be something within the site. When it freezes up like it does, I noticed before I can go to other websites with no problem. Now I see that I can actually go to other parts of DVDTalk with no problem, like "Coupons" or "Easter Eggs"...but if I try to go to one of the forums...nothing.

GeoffK 06-16-05 01:08 PM

I'll look into it

dick_grayson 06-16-05 01:11 PM

currently?

The Infidel 06-16-05 01:41 PM

It's been doing it every few minutes the last couple hours.

Yeah, I've noticed it intermittedly all day.

eedoon 06-16-05 03:16 PM

Apparently the disconnecting thing on me also happen on some other site. I did a tracert on a few sites and it has timeouts. But anyway, it is a little bit slow. A few minute ago the page won't load at all when I tried to jump between forum. Had to stop the loading process and reload.

The Infidel 06-20-05 03:40 AM

It's still doing it. Any answers yet?

ianholm 06-20-05 10:37 AM

Yep, I just noticed the slowdown about 15 minutes ago, but it seems to be OK now.

AGuyNamedMike 06-20-05 10:39 AM

Yeah, it seems to do it all day a couple of times an hour at least. I'm getting used to it.

The Infidel 06-26-05 03:41 AM

Still doing it. Any answers yet?

GeoffK 06-27-05 01:54 PM

after a LOT of digging we THINK we have found the issue (a php cache program which wasn't configured the way it needed to be)

HOPEFULLY this will help resolve the issue.

Josh H 06-28-05 11:15 AM

Still getting the periods of slowness today. Other sites loading fine for me.

Mopower 06-30-05 12:03 AM

Down to a crawl now. Almost unuseable at times. But it has been coming and going. The site timed out on me numerous times. But if I go to another website it comes up fine. So it's nothing on my end.

Same here........again (and again and again, etc.)

It's only the forum section that this is happening with. Was that made clear before? I just want to be sure to include any piece of information that will, hopefully, get this problem fixed ASAFP, because it's very aggravating/frustrating.

das Monkey 06-30-05 09:27 AM

Just in case you need more anecdotal evidence as confirmation, the intermittent problems of the past month are still pretty prevalent over here too. There are bursts of time where everything is great and then long periods of sluggish behavior with a few timeouts mixed in here and there.

Could it be the database? I nose around the processlist list from time to time and see an awful lot of LOCKs.

AGuyNamedMike 07-07-05 07:44 AM

Still experiencing the slowness from time to time, though as I said I am getting used to it (sorta nostalgic experience, reminds me of the old 14.4 dialup days). It happened yesterday morning at precisely 8am EST, then a few more times during the day. Only hit it once so far this morning.

GeoffK 07-07-05 09:33 AM

Thanks for the updates. We'll continue to look into it.

Daniel-A 07-09-05 12:06 AM

Was the forum down for a bulk of time today? ~4-10 pst somewhere in there?

GeoffK 07-09-05 01:54 AM

2 hrs tonight. Upstream issue/

Ok, at least now I know it wasn't internet issues on my end.

The Infidel 07-16-05 03:51 AM

Still doing it.

Still aggravating.

Y2K Falcon 07-16-05 04:03 AM

What time do forum database backups occur?

AGuyNamedMike 07-18-05 01:40 PM

Just did it again: 2:39 to 2:41 Eastern.

Ranger 07-19-05 06:21 PM

The forum seems to get stuck for a minute or two then return to normal. It happens several times a day, which is a bit worrisome because it feels like another server crash is coming.

Numanoid 07-20-05 02:43 PM

The forum is so slow today, I'm having to shave between posts.

AGuyNamedMike 07-20-05 03:10 PM

Just did it again: 4:09 to 4:11pm Eastern.

GeoffK 07-20-05 06:44 PM

We're still working to figure out WHY it does this. So far we've tried a number of things but are coming up empty.
