Seems decent so far.

One thing...when doing a search, is there a reason that it takes up to 2 minutes to tell you that searching is disabled? Shouldn't that message appear immediately when attempting to search with the functionality disabled?

Not if the server is loaded to hell, it then would struggle to even give the error message.

Lots of problems just a bit ago (around 10 am EST). Reply hung, threads loading super slow, then got the forum down messages for a while.

if you get the forum down message, then Geoff is doing something..if it's just slow ..then it's the server having a fit..

My beef is that sometimes when you are answering a question in a thread, your post with the answer shows up before the post with the question. What's going on?

See this thread for example:

I think i figured it out. 2 servers doing web duty with 2 clocks not in sync. I sync'd them up so hopefully that will solve that problem.

After carefully observing the site for the last couple of days, I'm sorry to say that there hasn't been any improvement in the speed department. Still experiencing frequent long page loads, etc.

I'm glad someone else noticed that. I thought I was having deja vu there for a while.

Problems aren't solved. It's not for lack of trying. We continue to work on figuring out what exactly this sucker needs not to cough blood.

Now I can't access forums using the "Select Forum Area" jump at the top, left of the page. If I go to the main page I can select forums from there, but not using the forum jump.

I hope it's because you guys are working on the system right now, but this place is really creeping along this afternoon.

I'm also still getting complete hang ups. I hit a reply or go to read a different post and it just sits there.
I have to back out, close out, and come in again to continue reading posts.

Our host pulled the 2nd web server which we were testing on the site. Totally a surprise to us... Sent a note this evening. Hope to have some sort of next step to try to deal with the server hell.

Put in several calls and emails to my hosting provider to see what the heck our next step is going to be.

With all the people in the world who know as much as they do about computers and systems analysis and such, and are paid a ton of money accordingly, there's not a single spark of my thought process that can fathom why this problem has not been remedied before now.

It's a good thing we're not paying for premium memberships at this point. The smell of refunds would be hanging thick in the air.

Yep. I agree. It's beyond frustrating. There's no reason it shouldn't be resolved, and considering the number of people who have been involved in working on the solution, it's pretty amazing it's still an issue.

How about a new hosting provider?

From what's in the thread, it seems like the problem is with DVD Talk's servers not being powerful enough, rather than a problem with the host. I assume Geoff is just trying every option to tweak etc on every end before having to buy new servers as it hasn't been that long since the last upgrade and servers are extremely expensive for a site this busy.

Anyone want to spill the beans on the server specs used for this site?
