I vote for avatars, since I'm not paying for the hosting bill :) having ran a 30gb/month forum, I can understand the issues...

You're 100% right.

In fact, damn X for displaying a burger in 100x100 since every.single.time I see his avatar, I feel this compulsion to go to Hardee's.

What makes it WORSE is that there are NO Hardee's anywhere near me.

DAMN YOU, X!

Rogue588 12-07-04 01:47 PM

If Geoff doesn't have a problem with 'em, as I said before, I have no problem with avatars. And, again, those that do can shut 'em down in the User CP. Now that we have options available to us, don't be so damn lazy.

Also, if you want to reduce clutter, how 'bout limiting the appearance of your sig to ONE post per thread? IIRC, I think WhoGirl mentioned this before the convert...

HOWEVER, if PICS are allowed in our sigs...well, i'll just have to email Geoff to cancel my membership...

I'm happy with having with avatars or no avatars. What ever you decide Geoff, I'm with ya buddy.

shizawn 12-07-04 03:04 PM

I don't really have an issue with them either, just as long as they're not too big.

ianholm 12-07-04 03:48 PM

I don't mind them either. 50x50 is a nice size and not allowing .gif ones should eliminate the animation part.

If you fire a shotgun enough times, you're going to hit something.

Do you have no convictions? :p

Phil L. 12-07-04 04:28 PM

I don't know. 50X50 is fairly tiny.
This is 51X52

If we do avatars, 100X100 seems to be a more reasonable size in order to make out what the hell it even is.

I agree. I spend way too much time at this place as it is. If we can get 100x100 (and animated *crosses fingers*), then many of us would find it easier to leave.

actually they're firearms related boards where I'd say most of the people are over 40, and even the people under 40 are probably 95% over 21

I think I have the perfect avatar for those who don't like them. see below:

here it is: -----> . <------- well, there it was. I think it fits within the size limit too.

would that be ok or is that just too overpowering? ;)

seriously though, I see nothing wrong with avatars at 100 x 100. I already have mine planned if we get to use animated ones. ;)

here is a quick look: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...0LnR_24329.gif

what?...you don't like my giant dancing banana? :D

BizRodian 12-07-04 10:26 PM

I think 50 is too small, 100 is too large. However, I HATE square ones. I think they need to be wide :)

Overall, while I do really like them, I know the problems they would cause, so in the end, I am pretty indifferent.

Sorry but a certain letter of the alphabet has stolen it. :p

Is it possible to have avatars turned off by default on accounts and for guests?

That would cut down on bandwidth and "protect the image" of the site.

AGuyNamedMike 12-08-04 06:35 AM

dibs (a bit graphic)

Another forum I go to just recently added avatars. 80x80 is their max size and they've don't allow gifs- thus no annoying animations to distract. And they also offer users the option to not to view avatars, so if someone is REALLY offended by them they don't have to see them.

I never was a big fan of Avatars, but implemented this way I was pleasantly surprised. My 2 cents.
