Proxy Problems - Has Something Changed?
#27
OK, there's enough big problems with the counted code that I've decided to pull it from the main page and the forums. I'll need to find a different solution which won't be a small task.

Trying that counted stuff again, huh?
Same problem.

It's taking forever to load for me as well. Luckily, it doesn't affect performance since the rest of the page loads fine for me. But just curious as to why Bilbo is needed - couldn't server log files do pretty much the same job? What stats exactly could be gleaned from counted.com that you couldn't get from the log files? There's also various server-based counters that wouldn't rely on counted.com's server...

The stats thing leaves me between a rock and a hard place.
We get so much traffic that our log files pass the 2 Gig max file size on a regular basis. The logs are so huge that running stat apps on them chunk the server which is already overtaxed.
So we turned to counted which for the most part has done a good job of helping us get the info we need most:
- How many unique people come to the site in a month (1 Million)
- Home many page views do we have and where
- How do people find DVD Talk (links in)
But lately it has been quite problematic and interupting people's ability to read the site.
So for now (again) I've removed it from the forum.
If anyone has a good suggestion of an alternate stats app, please let me know

Bilbo has been pissing me off, making me have inordinately long page load times...
So I fixed it. With Proxomitron, open the Webpage filters section. Find the "Counter Killer". Turn it on and edit it.
Under the Matching Expression section, you'll find a long string.. part of that string looks like this:
(count(er|.pl)
Change that part to this:
(count(er|ed|.pl)
Save Default Settings and reload. That'll eliminated counted.com for all time, everywhere, along with several other time consuming counter sites.
