Re: The 15th Annual Sci-fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread

I've worked with the checklist and what I mainly did was cut down the numbers of required watches for completion. I combined 2 of the earlier decades (1910/1920, I had already combined 1890/1900 last year). So there are now 12 checks total, but only 6 are required.

I did revamp the whole "he's dead, Jim" list with actors who passed in the last year or so. I don't think I got any suggestions, so I went with a list I found online and looked at their IMDb.com credits. I won't lie, there are one or two that have a lot of guest appearances, but I figured that still counted. Please let me know if I missed someone obvious or if someone I did pick just won't work.

I did take away the whole IMDb.com section. Sounded like no one really loved it, so just removed it.

Actor list: I added most of the suggestions to the list but really dropped the number required down to 10. I believe there are 36 names now, but I did not remove anyone...yet. I really like the suggestion of changing it up every year by drawing names or doing some sort of rotation. That way the names change but it's not an impossible chore each year to figure out who to remove or add. I would LOVE feedback on what people think of this!

There's a few other smaller additions (added Bay and King to respective sections, added lasers to sub-genres).

Let me know what you guys think, did I miss something, did I misspell a name, how does it look in general?

^ The checklist looks fantastic! I also like the idea of doing a lottery/rotation of actor names.

Actor names: EDRIS ELBA not Eldris Elba. And CHRIS EVANS not Christ Evans. Other than that it looks great! Thanks for your hard work!

Thank you! I had a feeling I missed something! Fixed.

Okay, I'm going to give this another day or so and unless I get any other comments against it, this will be the checklist. I'll put up the list thread tomorrow night once it's official.

The List Thread is up HERE.

It's watch at least 10 actors from that list. If you can find one film with 10 in go for it!

That being said, I can certainly rephrase it. It might be Monday before I get a chance to, but I will make it a bit clearer...though it has been phrased that way for a bit.

Could be! As long as it fits the scifi/fantasy theme, and is a holiday movie, it would count. July is half way to xmas, so it's a nod to that.

Examples would be The Santa Clause or Santa vs the Martians.

This really crept up on me, how is June nearly over? The big question for me is do I watch Star Blazers 2202 now or wait till the animation challenge?

You could always wait until the end of the month and get double credit when the challenges overlap!

Re: The 15th Annual Sci-fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread

I can't believe how fast the month has gone! Tomorrow is the start of the challenge, dusk wherever you are. Not sure what I plan on watching first, myself. I have quite a backlog of movies to chose from, so the hard part will be choosing.

What are you starting with?

Re: The 15th Annual Sci-fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread

I don't know yet myself. Because, not only do I have a good selection of physical media, so much is also available to stream. And that's not even taking into account what might be on tv at the time, plus I am a Coast Insider, with the app on my phone too, so there are plenty of episodes of Coast to Coast AM to listen to. I have been on an 80s cartoon kick lately though, and just a couple nights ago watched a couple season 2 episodes of The Transformers.

Re: The 15th Annual Sci-fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread

I'm starting off with Michael Hoffman's adaptation of A Midsummer Night's Dream. I'm not seen it in over a decade and am excited to rewatch it in preparation for seeing a staging of the play on Saturday. I made a list of possible watches for the month, but I have so many obligations and projects that I'm not sure if I'll get to participate as much as I would like.

I've also acquired three adaptations of Frank Herbert's Dune and hope to watch them over the course of the month.

Re: The 15th Annual Sci-fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread

I'm starting off with The Mummy Returns, one of 41 different series that I am at various points of watching each year during this challenge. I will wrap up 4 of those series this year so I will still have 37 automatic movies to watch next year (plus some unofficial series like general Marvel movies, general DC movies and M. Night Shyamalan movies). I plan on watching about 167 hours worth of movies and tv series this challenge if everything works out. It will be a push for me but I think I can do it. Less than 24 hours to go so I am really getting stoked to get started. I hope everyone has a great challenge!

I just realized this morning while getting dressed for work that it starts *tonight*!!

I'd been thinking about what to watch... Not real sure right now as I've been stockpiling SF/Fantasy stuff the past few months in anticipation. I'm kind of leaning towards the new BR of The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm - I've never seen it before, at least that I remember, and it sounds like great fun! Then... my BR copy of the Francis the Talking Mule collection arrived yesterday and those are favorites... BUT - I really don't know yet as there are more than a few new BR editions of "hard" SF favorites in the queue...

I'm guessing the new Villeneuve version, Lynch's version, and the miniseries...

"Dune" is one of my all-time favorite book series. I'm one of the few people who seem to like Lynch's movie (especially the longer cut) though I favor the miniseries. It's excellent (and there's a region free BR of it that looks excellent). I'm itching to watch Villeneuve's film for a first time... don't know if it'll be this year or not (I'm very budget minded with purchases and that one's not dropped quite low enough yet).

Well, I find myself not having to work for a bit, so I’m going to binge Obi-Wan Kenobi tonight. My temporary job of over a year was terminated today so I think I can spend the next few days watching a ton of movies!

Those are the three versions I have! It's been years since I saw the Lynch version, and I was pretty champagne-drunk when I did. I'm interested to see what I think of it sober! The miniseries is awesome as is the follow up Children of Dune. The first book is one of my favorites. I read it every summer from ages twelve to twenty. I reread it last year in preparation for the new movie and was astounded by how much it shaped my worldview.

I hope you enjoy the Villeneuve adaptation when you watch it. I was blown away by it and am eager to revisit it.

Think I"m going to start with Disney's The Jungle Cruise. I enjoyed it when I saw it last year at the theater (my first post-pandemic in person movie!) and bought the BR during Black Friday. Feels like a good time to watch it again.

Re: The 15th Annual Sci-fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread

As I get into my first watch, Disney's Jungle Cruise, I am reminded of Emily Blunt. She has several fantasy and sci-fi credits under her belt. I've added her to the consideration list for next year. I bring this up just to remind people that if you stumble across an actor that would fit that isn't on the list please share here and I'll add it to the reminder in the first post. Thanks!

I was very tired tonight and didn't even wake up until midnight anyway. I couldn't think of anything in particular, so I'm just working on something from my DVR to start with.
