14th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge List Thread!

Rules: Dates: Dusk June 30-Dawn August 1st

Movies/TV shows should be labeled sci-fi or fantasy from either imdb.com or allmovie.com. Other labels don't matter as long as there is at least a sci-fi or fantasy label from one of those sites. Action/Sci-fi would be fine.

If anyone has a problem with something someone watches or just wants an opinion on if it's sci-fi or fantasy or not, ask here.

Sci-Fi/Fantasy documentaries are allowed but not DVD featurettes/interviews. Documentaries include UFO and alien abduction type shows.

As with the other challenges, the lists must be numbered or it won't count.

Use any counting method you prefer, as prize determination does not depend on number of items watched.

3 wild cards for all. Use for those shows you want to watch but know they really don't count but they're pretty close or borderline to counting.

Watching the movie with the commentary will count as an entry.

Watching multiple versions(theatrical and director's cut) of the same movie will also count.

Exceptions: 1: The Tarzan films are eligible to watch and count for the watch list, but not for the check list.
2. Superhero films. If they do not have a sci-fi/fantasy tag, they count for the watch list, but not for the check list.

Audio:

Sci-fi/Fantasy Radio

I'm treating audio harshly since this is primarily a movie/tv challenge. That being said, one episode, 4 hours with commercials, of Coast to Coast counts as one entry. It's the same format for TV, only doubled. The topic of the show has to be sci-fi/fantasy related, so it shouldn't be that much of a problem with Coast to Coast.

If you're listening to something without commercials, or can skip them, you're looking at 3 hours of audio for one entry.

1/4 entry = 45 minutes without commercials and 60 with commercials.

1/2 entry = 90 minutes without commercials and 120 with commercials.

3/4 entry = 135 minutes without commercials and 180 with commercials.

1 entry = 180 minutes without commercials and 240 with commercials.

ALIENS & MONSTER MOVIES
Alien Raiders (2008) - Much better than you’d expect from a direct to video Sci-Fi Horror movie. ⭐⭐⭐
Cosmic Sin (2021) - Awful. This is a SyFy Channel quality movie. Everything feels cheap. ⭐
Extinction (2018) - Starts out a little slow, but once the invasion starts the action is nonstop. ⭐⭐⭐
Humanoids from the Deep (1980) - It's much more gory and rapey than I expected. Lots of blood and boobs. ⭐⭐⭐
Let Us In (2021) - Tween sci-fi/horror that's not scary. The acting is bad and the story's ridiculously stupid. ⭐
Mars Attacks (1996) - One of my favorite Tim Burton movies. ⭐⭐⭐⭐
The Superdeep (2020) - Cool setting and a decent first half, but it falls apart in the second half. ⭐⭐

APOCALYPSE MOVIES
A Quiet Place: Part II (2021) - An excellent follow-up to the first movie. ⭐⭐⭐⭐
School's Out Forever (2021) - It's a teen version of The Walking Dead without the zombies. ⭐⭐

Godzilla (2014) - The story was stupid, but the action was great so I didn't care. ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) - Lots of monsters, awesome battle scenes, and excellent special effects. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

ROBOTS & TECHNOLOGY MOVIES
Robot Wars (1993) - It's called Robot Wars, and there's only 5 minutes of robots fighting. ⭐

SPACE OPERA MOVIES
Lockout (2012) - This is fun and fast-paced with some great visuals and special effects. ⭐⭐⭐
Riddick (2013) - Not as good as Pitch Black, but it's still a decent popcorn Sci-Fi Action flick. ⭐⭐⭐

TIME TRAVEL & MULTIVERSE MOVIES
Infinite (2021) - This movie was really bad. The story was ridiculous. The whole thing was forgettable. ⭐⭐
Palm Springs (2020) - Parts of it were fun. But it dragged in the second half. Groundhog Day did it better. ⭐⭐⭐
Parallel (2018) - Some cool ideas, but it dragged in the middle. Fans of Coherence and Primer will enjoy it. ⭐⭐⭐
The Tomorrow War (2021) - This was a great movie. Much better than I expected from a direct to streaming film. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ = A Classic. One of my all time favorite movies.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ = Highly Recommended. An excellent movie. Worth buying.
⭐⭐⭐ = Good. An average movie. Worth a rental.

22. Pod (2015) *** 6/10A brother and sister head out to a rural lake house to find their disturbed brother, plus more than they bargained for. Interesting story, well acted. A straight creature feature.
23. The 6th Day (2000) *** 7/10 The 6th day is in my view a reboot of the Total Recall story, but substituting the concept of cloning. A fun time, but not as good as Total Recall.

32. Battlefield Earth (2000) 4/10 Yeah, its bad, but it is in no way one of the worst movies of all time. The script and dialogue are so bad its cringe worthy and it must be John Travolta's worst acted film. i also agree that all of the Dutch camera angles didn't work. Most of the other actors I thought did okay.
July 14th
32. Until the End of the World (1999) 7/10 ***Wenders almost five hour long exploration of world travel triggered by money and a stolen camera is simultaneously interesting and dull. The five hour long version certainly covers the canvas of all possible reactions from a viewer willing to sit through the film.
July 15th
33. The Andromeda Strain (1971) 9/10. The majority of the film is four scientist/physicians cooped up in a top secret lab trying to determine the composition of an extraterrestrial virus. For such a simple premise the film is incredibly believable and tense.
34. Starfish (2018) *** 4/10.A young girl explores what happened to her friend through a series of video tapes. A tepid, uninteresting film.
35. The Andromeda Strain Mini Series (2008) 5/10. ***. Unfortunately this reimagining of the classic film has none of the tension and seriousness of the original, substituting politically correct characters and dull subplots for a cohesive and focused primary story.

37. Shock Treatment (1972) *** 6/10 A scientist runs a "health" clinic that attempts to circumvent the aging process, but his methods have a sinister, murderous side. Interesting concept, but the execution was uneven, particularly the third act.

42. When World's Collide (1951) 8/10.A Sci Fi classic. A distant planet threatens to crash into earth and its up to a few men to devise a rocket ship to transport a select few to another planet. Great story and effective special effects.

44. The Machine (2013) *** 6/10 A human cyborg program developed during a second cold war inevitably goes wrong. Although well acted, this one was tired and predictable.

46. Scanner Cop (1994) *** 6/10 This fourth installment in the Scanners franchise is just a notch above the Sci Fi channel in terms of acting, production values, I still found it an entertaining watch.
47. Scanner Cop 2 The Showdown (1995) *** 7/10. Scanner cop two was across the board a better film then the first scanner cop. Better acting, better story and better special effects.

48. Day of the Animals (1977) 8/10. A classic in the "eco-horror' sub genre with great acting from Chris George and his wife Linda, as well as a tour de force performance from Leslie Nielsen.

23. Oxygen (2021) A woman wakes up in a cryo capsule not knowing how she got there. The entire movie is inside the capsule, I'm not kidding. As lame as that sounds, director Alexandre Aja and star Mélanie Laurent make it watchable and at times even interesting.

Likewise the inclusion of Red Guardian who does absolutely nothing. Not as bad as Black Panther, but second place for the worst marvel movie.

31. Logan's Run, S1 (1978) Ep. Night Visitors The odd episode of the series since it has a supernatural angle. Our heroes encounter a haunted house inhabited by Satanists!
32. The Discovery (2017) A scientist (Robert Redford) discovers solid proof of an afterlife which provoques mass suicides. Interesting drama that explores the human psyche. Shades of Brainstorm also.

33. Logan's Run, S1 (1978) Eps. Turnabout l Stargate The former episode shows the loyalty that Logan still has for Francis 7, the Sandman who pursues him. The latter episode was the last in the series which offers no closure to Logan and Jessica's search for Sanctuary.
34. Blade Runner 2049 (2017) I was able to appreciate this movie more on this second viewing.

1. Space: 1999 (1975): "A Matter of Life and Death"; ☼ Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba (2019): S1E1-2.

July 1st
☼ 2. Oxygen (2021): I've seen a few movies set in a single room, but this has to have the smallest setting of them all: a coffin-sized cryo-chamber. Despite that, it was engaging throughout, and not the kind of movie I'd expect from Alexandre Aja (who made horror/thrillers like High Tension, Crawl, and The Hills Have Eyes remake). ****

3. Space: 1999 (1975): "Black Sun", "Ring Around the Moon"

☼ 4. Psycho Goreman (2020): I get what they were going for (80s Troma movie crossed with Power Rangers crossed with ET). While an amusing enough watch, it seemed like a one-joke movie. A little bit of real heart (and sympathetic characters) would've helped greatly. I think the recent Turbo Kid went for the same vibe and pulled it off much better. **1/2

6. Space: 1999 (1975): "Earthbound". So far, the best episode of the show. Christopher Lee guest stars as a dignified alien on his way to Earth. But what really made this stand-out was a horrifying ironic twist ending that would've fit in well on Twilight Zone. "Another Time, Another Place".

☼ 7. A Quiet Place Part II (2020): Not as intense as the first movie, but not many movies are. Even though the plotting was light, it was nice to see the story show a little of the beginning of the alien invasion and have the setting branch out to give an idea of what the world-at-large is like. ***1/2

☼ 8. The Mortuary Collection (2019): Certainly more of a horror movie, but IMDb lists "fantasy" as the first genre. Solid little horror anthology, very much in the vein of Creepshow and Tales from the Crypt. ***1/2

☼ 9. Shadow in the Cloud (2020): I figure being a "creature feature" makes this a reasonable wild card. Kind of like the gremlin episode of Twilight Zone but set in WWII. Low-budget, lean (not counting credits, under 80 minutes), and pulpy fun as long as you're willing to not take things too seriously. ***1/2 Wildcard #1

☼ 10. Lapsis (2020): Low-key indie sci-fi has an interesting "Black Mirror" approach to the modern gig economy. This is much more for the independent drama crowd than sci-fi fans ... but if you're game, it's a movie about something different (which there's not a lot of out there). ***1/2

14. Tenet (2020): I don't know if everything holds together, but you can certainly see how pieces fit together more with a second viewing. Not my favorite Nolan, but still a very worthwhile movie that gives a lot to think about. ****

16. ☼ Werewolves Within (2021): A sillier Knives Out, but with a werewolf! I was surprised at first that I never heard of the video game, until I saw that it's only multiplayer (kind of like an online mafia-type game). ***1/2

21. The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958): I had to get around to rewatching this after including its picture at the top of my list. One of my all-time favorites growing up. And despite advances in effects technology, Ray Harryhausen's work still looks great. Though story-wise, I'm puzzled how nobody was clued into the evil magician's scheme. Magician tries everything he can to get the Caliph of Baghdad and Sinbad to help him go back to the island to get him lamp, and gets repeated turned down. Then the princess magically shrinks, and the magician says the only cure is back on the island. You wouldn't think ... he could have anything to do with the shrinking, would you?!? *****

July 19th
22. The Golden Voyage of Sinbad (1973): This may be the oldest movie I remember seeing in the theater, although with more common theatrical re-releases in the days before home video I can't be sure it beat Jaws (which I know I saw in the summer it came out). Not quite up to the level of Harryhausen's first Sinbad movie, but still quite good. The Kali sword fight is a highlight, as is Caroline Munroe's cleavage. Even knowing the main villain is played by Tom Baker, I just don't see any trace of his Doctor Who (which he'd start playing not long after this) and would never have guessed it was the same actor if I didn't know. ****

23. Space: 1999 (1975): "Voyager's Return", "Collision Course"

July 21st
24. Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger (1977): One of Harryhausen's lesser movies, though still good compared to other sci-fi and fantasy movies aimed at kids in the mid-70s. Bad performances from the lead hero (Patrick Wayne looks good, but is incredibly stilted whenever he speaks) and villain (Zenobia the sorceress is laughably over-the-top) really hurt. Although the women are beautiful (Jane Seymour and Tyrone Powers' daughter) and we've got another Doctor Who tie-in with Patrick Troughton as the hermit sage who comes along for the adventure. ***

25. ☼ Fried Barry (2020): Certainly not a movie for everyone, and it won't take long to know where you stand. Sometimes hard to look at, but trippy and weird and something a little different. Though in a way it's a perverted riff on ET, with an alien adjusting to Earth, making friends and having adventures. Except instead of watching tv, riding bikes, and going trick-or-treating, this alien has sex with prostitutes, does drugs, disrupts a mental hospital, and gets in chainsaw fights. ***1/2

It's funny thinking back to when this came out ... most people thought it was going to be a disaster: big budget + based on a Disney ride + pirate movie. 28. ☼ Jolt (2021): Kate Beckinsale is adorable, the supporting cast is strong, and I liked the central premise (kind of like John Wick crossed with The Terminal Man). Too bad the movie itself isn't very good. ** Wildcard #2

29. Gremlins (1984): Time for a cinematic palette cleanser! Like Poltergeist, this has producer Steven Spielberg's fingerprints all over it. But Joe Dante has a strong filmography, and his style comes through in his best movie. ****1/2

30. ☼ Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba (2019): S1E11-14. And I think I may be bailing on this series. Completely surprising, because 10 episodes in I thought it was very good. The premise wasn't anything new (teen swordsman battles demons in early 20th century Japan), it was very well done and I was interested in where it was going. And then we're introduced to a comic relief character who spends 90% of his time screaming, crying, or perving (often in combination) with a nails-on-chalkboard voice. I hoped he just there for the one story arc, but nope ... looking online, he's a main character going forward. And there are just too many things I don't have time to watch to spend time with a show that actively annoys me (no matter how many fans it seems to have).

32. ☼ World on a Wire (1973): A 2-part miniseries (so I'll count it as 2 entries on my list). I'll review after I watch the second part tomorrow.

33. ☼ World on a Wire (1973): I'm not sure how I never got around to seeing this until now. Maybe the imposing running time (although its very manageable in 2 nights, as it was originally intended to be seen) and the other Fassbinder movies I've seen haven't been my cup of tea. But this was very good ... very stylish with a story line way ahead of its time. ****

34. The City of Lost Children (1995): I've been a fan of this weird, wonderful movie since taking a 90 minute drive to see it in a big city art house theater when it was newly released. It sounded like something that begged to be seen on the big screen (and it was), and in those days there was only VHS standard def for home video. ****1/2

35. ☼ Fish Story (2009): Very cute movie that cleverly pieces what seem to be unrelated shorts into a story about how a song for a forgotten punk band in 1975 saves the world from a comet strike 37 years later. ****

36. Alien: Resurrection (1997): Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Joss Whedon should have been a "can't lose" combination. But it just doesn't fit for an Alien movie. The cast is good and there are some good set-pieces, but this still ranks low in the Alien franchise (though still better than Alien 3). ***

July 29th
37. ☼ The Invisible Dr. Mabuse (1962): While clearly well below the quality of the Fritz Lang Mabuse movies, this is a crisply-moving and solid Krimi (that clearly dips into sci-fi with the invisibility). ***

38. ☼ Spaceballs (1987): You know, I don't think I've ever seen this whole thing before. Maybe a combination of Star Wars riffs seeming old by 1987, and the fact that the quality of Mel Brooks movies (at least for me) had been declining for years. I can see how this would've been greatly helped by seeing it with an appreciative audience. The cast is fun, but the jokes are really erratic. I think the Alien and Planet of the Apes jokes at the end saved it for a slightly positive personal rating. ***

July 30th
39. ☼ Jungle Cruise (2021): About what I was expecting ... a fun movie that you don't want to think about too hard, with a couple of great leads. The Rock would make a great boat captain for the Disney ride, but I suspect he has better things to do. ***1/2

40. ☼ Love, Death, & Robots (2021): Season 2. Fewer episodes than season 1 (I watched them all in about an hour 40 minutes), but still very good. There are so many great story ideas to be mined from short fiction that so much more of this could be done (especially since the animated format really doesn't put any restrictions on what kind of stories could be told). Interesting to see the variety of animation techniques, ranging from very abstract to so photo-realistic that it's easy to forgot it's not live-action.

43. Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977): I liked ending these challenges in style! First time seeing the "Director's Cut", which is pretty close to the theatrical release (and gets rid of the "inside the mothership" ending from the "Special Edition". I always get a chuckle out of the one guy frantically running to the port-a-potty just as the mothership lands. As someone who usually starts a movie with a big caffeinated drink, only to have the receipt come due near the end, I sympathize. *****
