Checklist
June 30
1. Soylent Green (1973)-HBO Max: 2022 and its predictions of a global heat wave are getting uncomfortably close
July 1
2. Demolition Man (1993)-HBO Max: I do not want an explanation about the 3 seashells.
July 2
3. The Tomorrow War (2021)-Amazon--Decent but forgettable story about contemporary humans being sent 30 years into the future to fight a carnivorous horde of alien monsters that threaten humanity's extinction. We do get some shirtless Chris Pratt.
4. Greenland (2020)-HBO Max: Unlike other comet impact films like Armageddon, Greenland focuses more on one family's struggle for survival in the face of impending doom for the planet. The FX are epic, but the deeper character development and more realistic tone make this the best of its subgenre, IMO.
July 3
5. Big Trouble in Little China (1986)-Starz: It's all in the reflexes.
6. The Superdeep (2020)-Shudder: The movie itself is middling, an alien infection consumes a rescue and research team in a Soviet-era mine. What really rustled my jimmies was the dubbing into English which completely destroyed the illusion for me. I much prefer subtitles and hearing the actors' voices, as in Sputnik.
July 8
7. Love and Monsters (2020)-Epix: I absolutely love this goofy comedy, The CGI monsters look terrifyingly realistic and the hero is adorably clueless.
8. Palm Springs (2020)-Hulu: Like Happy Death Day, this is another ripoff of Groundhog Day, but with Andy Samberg.
July 9
9. Alien (1979)-HBO MAX: It is amazing how contemporary Alien looks 40+ years on.
10. The Vast of Night (2020)-Amazon Prime: This is still an astonishing work from a first-time director.
11. Ice (1998)-Amazon Prime: Extremely cheesy made-for-TV flick about an increase in sun spots causing a new ice age. You never see movies about global warming.
July 10
12. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984)-Showtime: As enjoyable as these films are, the white superiority subtext is inescapable,
13. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989)-Showtime: Pretty decent for the third in a series.
July 11
14. Luca (2021)-Disney+-Entirely delightful Pixar film about a pair of young Italian sea monsters who become human boys on dry land.
July 12
15. Soul (2020)-Disney+-Soul is a cut above recent Pixar films with imaginative animation and a really good story about making your life mean something before you end up in the Great Beyond.
16. Dune (1984)-HBO Max--Although the trailer for Dennis Villeneuve's version looks terrific, David Lynch's film is much better than its reputation.
July 13
17. Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)-Showtime: Big Bang Theory is wrong: the Nazis would not have found the Ark without Indiana Jones finding it first.
18. Rollerball (1975)-Showtime: One of my favorite James Caan roles as an aging athlete being muscled out of his sport for being too good
19. Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey (1991)-Showtime: The best film of the trilogy.
July 14
20. Killdozer (1974)-Blu-Ray A malignant alien intelligence possesses a bulldozer and kills a construction crew on a remote island. One of the better TV-movies from the 70s .
July 15
21. A Quiet Place Part II (2020)-Paramount+-Sequels to hit movies can be tricky because so often the devices that made the first film work fail in the second, but this holds up fairly well, despite losing so many of the surprises from its predecessor. At least now we know the origin of the Death Angels.
July 16
22. Frequently Asked Questions About Time Travel (2008)-HBO Max-Fun buddy comedy about a trio of British slackers who accidentally get caught up in a convoluted time loop in a pub..
23. My Super Ex-Girlfriend (2006)-HBO-Entertaining but misogynistic comedy, the science fiction is thinking that Luke Wilson could date Uma Thurman
24. Virtuosity (1995)--HBO--Remember when virtual reality was new?
25. Xanadu (1980)-HBO-It's amazing how fame can disappear. 40 years ago Olivia Newton-John and ELO were musical superstars, and now they have both disappeared from pop culture. Yes, this movie is bad, but the music's great and it has a certain camp appeal.
July 17
26. Drive Angry (1981)-Showtime: this feels like a warmup for Mandy because it has a similar plot about revenge on an evil cult.
27. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)-Showtime: This is better than its reputation, but Harrison Ford should not be making any more sequels
28. Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988)-Showtime: This goofy movie deserves its cult fandom,
July 19
29. Awake (2021)-Netflix: The movie starts with a simple premise: humanity is facing extinction because an astronomical event has made people unable to sleep. The action focuses on one mother trying to keep her child safe as the world spirals into chaos.
30. Star Trek: First Contact (1997)-Epix: IMO, this is the best of all the ST films.
July 20
31. The Predator (2018)-FX: I thought this was really stupid when I saw it in the theater, and after giving it another shot, I stand by that opinion.
32. Real Genius (1984)-Starz: I finally got around to seeing this. Enjoyable, but not really the stuff of cult status.
July 22
33. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1978)-Putlocker: While Sgt. Pepper is a legendarily bad jukebox musical of Beatles covers, the performances range from decent to better than the original.
34. Contact (1997)-Epix--Some great ideas about alien contact ruined by a sappy story.
July 24
35. Altered States (1980)-Blu-Ray--William Hurt takes mushrooms and turns into a cosmic being.
July 25
36. Day of the Dolphin (1973)-Blu-Ray-George C Scott trains dolphins to speak. Interesting 70s artifact.
37. The Monster That Challenged the World (1957)-Blu-Ray-A terrific cheesy monster movie perfect for a rainy Saturday afternoon, this one starring giant prehistoric snails that are released after an earthquake hits the Salton Sea.
July 26
38. Robocop (1987)-Blu-Ray--The satire still holds up.
July 28
39. Flash Gordon (1987)-DVD--Flash Gordon is a ridiculously good time.
July 29
40. The Outer Limits (1964): The Invisible Enemy/ Keeper of the Purple Twilight-Blu-Ray--Probably the best SF series of the 1960s
41. Schmigadoon (2021): Eps 1-4: Apple + This show was made for musical theater geeks
42. Into the Woods (2014) Blu-Ray--The film leaves out a lot of the complexity of Sondheim and Lapine's take on mortality and the strain between adult children and their parents.
July 30
42. Pink Floyd: The Wall (1982) Putlocker--Like All That Jazz, this is a semi-autobiography blended with fantasy where Roger Waters bares his tortured interior world, with the aid of animator Gerald Scarfe and singer Bob Geldof.
July 31
43. Chaos on the Bridge (2014) YouTube--A doc about the behind-the-scenes troubles of the first two season of ST:TNG
44. Blade Runner (1982). TCM--If The Final Cut had been in theaters, Blade Runner would have been successful.
45. Svengoolie-The Creation of the Humanoids (1962) Me-TV--Painfully dull.
