Just seeking some clarification on the horror movies in horror movies theme. Is it confined to just the movies watched in the horror movie? Or is it the movie itself that features another horror movie? Or both? Also do you have to see footage of the movie or could it just be mentioned?
Thanks!!

Hmmm. Good question.
I figured it was like Halloween being shown on the TV in Scream. But would you count Halloween or Scream? I'd assume Scream is the qualifier here. And just my opinion. I'll be happy to put it up for vote if need be. |

Yeah, I'd say the movie itself. Since last year's NOTLD theme was specifically for that film we accepted the title being a play on words, characters talking about the film, etc. to up the list count. Since this one covers any film, well, the entries are already considerable higher, and the list compiled by alyxstarr focuses on the featured film.

Looks like my choice of The Fan would also work for playground theme. I don't remember the scene but it's on the list linked for that theme.

As of right now we still need 8 more subset volunteers.
And still waiting on 9 volunteers out of the current 23 to give their picks. It's going good so far; I just need some suggestions from people who have yet to give any before I can share what themes I need picks from. |

Things have been a bit too busy and I've finally got a few picks down. I'm planning on submitting more but here's a few for now.
The Criterion Collection Crossover – Pan’s Labyrinth, Godzilla Stranded - Wolf Creek (2005) Werewolves / Were-Creatures On A Full Moon - Wer (2013) Home Invasion Horror - Don't Breathe (2016) |
Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 15: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)
One thing to consider with Pan's Labyrinth and the Criterion Crossover day is that there is a ultra high definition (4K) release of Pan's Labyrinth on October 1, 2019 which I am sure will be a sight to behold but taunting us in being just one day too late for the Criterion Crossover date. It might be better to hold off on that one so it can be properly enjoyed as a subset film in the highest resolution possible.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 15: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)
So, for the first time in my many years of doing this, I have compiled my list on something I've wanted to do since year one. Basically, if I had to look through the history of horror films and pick only 100 that would best explain the genre, cover multiple aspects, themes, fears, monsters, etc. while making sure each decade is pretty well covered. After giving it a good think here is what I think my list is going to be:

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 15: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)
I can only assume that those of you who are suggesting The Uncanny as a subset pick have never actually SEEN The Uncanny.
There's a good reason that it never got a theatrical release in the US. Also, ViewAskewbian's list is certainly one to ponder. It did remind me of this, however (the pertinent part begins at about nineteen seconds in): |
Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 15: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)
Interesting list Viewaskewbian; solid choices. Thanks for sharing.
I wonder about the new Pennywise / 'It' franchise and how emblematic that will be of 2010s horror; or the new Halloween since those both seem like rehashes to me but I'm not sure what I would put in 2010s instead. Maybe Hereditary, The VVitch, Train to Busan, or Insidious stand out as unique forces in horror film. Cool list with some food for thought. |
Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 15: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

I'll be glad to take a Subset pick. I'll spend some time perusing the thread, but in the meantime sign me up. |
