That’s a great list. It has got me thinking about watching horror already

I wonder about the new Pennywise / 'It' franchise and how emblematic that will be of 2010s horror; or the new Halloween since those both seem like rehashes to me but I'm not sure what I would put in 2010s instead. Maybe Hereditary, The VVitch, Train to Busan, or Insidious stand out as unique forces in horror film.
Cool list with some food for thought.

I think that you've hit upon the main appeal of lists like this, Cow; invariably, the reader thinks, "Ah, but I would have swapped..." and then proceeds to mentally reconfigure the list.

If I were to come up with my own list, it would probably share 75-80 titles with ViewAskewbian's list . That's a pretty good percentage. I wonder if, however, a younger (say, under 30 years old) horror movie fan's list would look entirely different? I feel pretty sure that it would.

Now I really do want to come up with my own list.

Basically, if I had to look through the history of horror films and pick only 100 that would best explain the genre, cover multiple aspects, themes, fears, monsters, etc. while making sure each decade is pretty well covered. After giving it a good think here is what I think my list is going to be: (insert list here)

Is this list also on Letterboxd, iCheckMovies, or IMDB? It would be great to "check" these off to keep track of what I HAVEN'T seen.

Yeah, took a lot of thought, really. I tossed IT in there because it was hugely popular and brought Stephen King back to the forefront and tossed Halloween in there because, to be 100% honest, I've watched a Halloween flick on the last day of this challenge since Day 1 and seemed a perfect way to cap off History of Horror on that date. :p

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 15: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

Yeah, I'd totally be interested in what others would put as their History of Horror in 100 films. My goal was to at least give each decade 10 flicks though certain years merited 1 or 2 more because it was hard to cut. I also didn't want to give one filmmaker or genre too much of a spotlight but still cover vampires, monsters, serial killers, slasher, etc. while also being able to bring in some flicks that tossed the genre on it's head like Shaun of the Dead, Cabin in the Woods, etc.

it was fun looking at flicks from all decades and really figuring out what might be essential while trying to also bypass my own personal favorites because, if I did that, Monster Squad totally would have been in the 80s :p

Eraserhead looks like a good suggestion for the Criterion film.

The White Dog is also a movie that would definitely fit for the Criterion film.

There's a good reason that it never got a theatrical release in the US.

As the first person to suggest it as a backup pick, I can say you're 100% correct - never seen it. I confused it with Uninvited and just kept it up. That said, can't blame someone for thinking an anthology with Peter Cushing, Donald Pleasence, and Ray Milland is worth checking out.

Oh man, I also thought people were choosing The Uninvited, a really fun, terrible, and hilarious B-flick about a killer cat.

^Now I might have to go with that for my main subset pick. I'll come clean and admit Viy is the only pick from my subset suggestions I've actually seen. All the others are taken from Blus in my to-watch pile.

No, that cast (and its bitchin' cool VHS cover art) suck(er)ed me in too, so I totally understand the curiosity aspect. But as a cat person (as in, "I prefer cats to dogs," not as in, "I change into a werepanther when sexually aroused"), I found the film to be completely ludicrous. However, if you've got some sort of cat phobia, it may work for you.

I can't honestly say I've ever been livid with myself for getting suckered into a VS disk. To this day, my wife will still bring up this scene:
