Thought I had this one but couldn't find it. Have to watch it for that cast.
I watched this earlier today. It was OK, athough the script seems to have been written by a committee of 12-year-old boys with its emphasis on jokes about boobs and penises.
That's my issue with so much of today's "comedy".

Some themes look mediocre on the surface to me, but once I dig there are hundreds of choices.
My "blessing" is that I have access to so many films that there aren't enough hours in the day to watch the interesting sounding theme compliant choices.

My only must-have end gameplan is that starting at dusk before Halloween, every film must take place on Halloween. So I could plan all my other must-watches around the other theme days if I wanted.

Sounds good, added to my queue. No such thing as too much Poe.

Woke up this morning at 5 AM after going to bed about midnight last night. Had that feeling like I couldn't wait to see what was under the Christmas tree. So glad it's only October 2nd.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 12th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/

Watch the Director's Cut of Alien last night. Got to share it with my 12 year old and he loved. After watching the Director's Cut again, I have to say this is one movie where I prefer the Theatrical Cut over the DC. The pace just flows better in the TC.

And I have to say that Alien (with a few exceptions) looks like it was made yesterday. The production value on the film is so freaking high. They would remake the movie today for $250 million and with green screen and CG and it wouldn't look half as good and authentic.

If it wasn't for the damn cat scenes, the movie would be a 5 star movie. I have to give it 4.5. Three major scenes revolve around the goddamn cat which gets on my nerves. And cat scares are always cheap (and never startle me...even when I don't expect them).

One dumb question...why does this freighter ship have a self destruct mode? I have always wonder why futurist movies transports always seem to have self destruct options. Whether it is a spaceship, car, boat, whatever. I know nothing about the military. Do we currently have transports with self-destruct modes in them or is this just a movie cliche?

Oh...and I followed Alien up with its sequel. Not the one you are thinking of. It was Alien 2: On Earth! I had never seen it before and was looking forward to some Italian sleaze. Unfortunately it was more like Italian snooze! Nothing really happens until 50 minutes into this 85 minute movie. There are a couple of awesome special effects/gore scenes but other than those and its movie title, I have no idea why anyone would want to see this a second time.

Query: Is Miss Peregrine's Home... (Tim Burton, monsters, creepiness) "horror" enough...? Most places are labelling it "Fantasy", but-

Yeah. Intellectual Property. Rights/licensing/etc in the film world. I know that they greenlit it and rushed it into production very quickly before the script went through major rewrites.

The Fright Night remake was put out by Disney, but Fright Night 2: The New Blood was put out by Fox. So, I'm not sure what the details are of why this came out through Fox, but I suspect it has something to do why it was rushed and direct to video. I do know that even though it is a sequel it is pretty much the same sequence of events as Fright Night.

I've always avoided it because I heard it was terrible, but I'm going to watch it this year and decide whether it is worth reviewing and adding to my reviews of the other three Fright Night movies I'm posting this month.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 12th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/

I broke open my 4 film box set of the Omen films. I started with the 2006 remake since i had never seen it and wanted to give it every advantage. I then watched the original. The 2006 remake is a shot for shot copy of the original, so only difference is the acting in which to judge the film.

Ill take gregory peck, patrick troughton, david warner, lee remick, billy whitelaw hands down over liev schrieber, pete postelwaite, david thewlis, julia stiles, mia farrow Any day. No contest with the original

The more stuff we have flying around, the more we look to self destruct options. There's research going on for satellites to self destruct after completing a mission. There's also testing of new rockets and junk where if things start going off course they get blown up.

I understand it for non-manned items. I am asking about manned transports.

Is it not a modern/futuristic/space version of the Pirate-cliche "scuttle the ship"? To avoid expensive cargo falling into the hands of villains/not-you, presumably.

Also - allegedly - various agencies can "brick" mobile phones and remotely send destructive virii to computers: perhaps the future one-ups that and allows for the remote removal of anything, even if it costs lives?

Lastly - albeit without the labelled "Self Destruct Button" - it's surely moderately-common-knowledge among the specialists what needs to be done (wrong, to extremes) to blow up vehicles. Indeed, looping back to scuttling, it's not at all uncommon for military vehicles/technology that could fall into enemy hands to be destroyed beyond the ability to reverse-engineer. Scorched Earth and all that.

Sacrificing lives in wartime - ordering men to their deaths against impossible odds, etc. - is hardly novel. Perhaps future-companies have the same attitudes?

Unfortunately, no. I have the first release. I would upgrade, but I've already bought this movie twice. Maybe someday in the future. That movie is just pure fun.

Usually, I wouldn't care for this, either, but since the main characters are early teens not that far away from 12, it makes sense that they would act this way.

On another subject, I go the unpopular route and like The Exorcist III so much better than the original.

Yeah. I understand that. But my original question was wondering if we have any current manned transports that actually have a self-destruct mode.

Everyone already knows future ones will have them if they watch the movies.

Blanking on what to watch for today's theme. I'm considering ordering the upcoming Exorcist III Blu-ray, so I don't want to do that one. Decisions, decisions.

I introduced a friend to a couple of first season episodes of Masters of Horror. He really enjoyed them. Of course, I started him with two of my favorites, Cigarette Burns and Jenifer. He now really wants to see the rest that I have on Blu-ray. Not sure what his reaction will be to some of the others. The episodes start to get a lot spottier after that.

That sucks to hear. I am planning on watching them all, but I dislike shot for shot remakes. It's why I won't bother with Cabin Fever though I loved the first one.

The Trivia question is tonight. Plus a bonus.

They'll be posted every Sunday (except 10/30) and run until the next one starts.

I think I'm catching the original today and the director's cut on release for comparison's sake.

I don't think so. I know some jets are made to self-destruct, in a way, on impact but other stuff the crew is supposed to destroy after a crash or if the thing's damaged and has to be left behind.

Consider the stealth stuff that's crashed or left behind in places we didn't want it. To be absolutely certain a self-destruct destroyed all of it and didn't leave a panel or something behind, that aircraft would have a lot of explosives all over it.

I'm just basing this opinion from what I've seen when I was in the air force and from some crashes that happened outside my area and also trying not to say something that'll have someone call or visit me about opsec.

I'm watching Highway to Hell for tonight's theme.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 12th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/

It has been a long time since I watched either, so I'll throw this question out there. Don't the Silent Hill films have aspects of their plots that would qualify them for today's theme? I was thinking so, but my memory of both films is a little hazy.

Hmm. That's not a bad idea ...

This was my intention as well, hence why I suggested it as my Subset pick. I haven't seen it in several years (and I just finished the first movie as well as it's book and am starting to read Legion) so this seemed like a good time to revisit it.

My favorites were Jenifer, Fair-Haired Child (which were both pretty creepy- for very different reasons), and Deer Woman (which was a ton of fun).

For today's theme I started with The Grotto, a fairly recent indy set in Italy. Fairly generic, but not horrible.

Then I checked out the (free on Amazon) first episodes of The Exorcist and Constantine, and unfortunately for my future wallet, enjoyed both.

Now I'm deciding whether to marathon all the Exorcist films, or the first season of Ash vs the Evil Dead.

So what is "must see" that is streaming on Netflix and Hulu in terms of horror?

Inexplicable Werner Herzog voice cameo!

Saw The Host for the challenge I think 2 years ago? Just finished We Are Still Here after making this post. There were way too many questions I had about that film that they didn't answer for me to really enjoy it. I'll try Stake Land, though.

Hope to get a Fright Night triple feature in, possibly partially in 3D if my disc arrives from England.
