Re: Seventh Annual Drive-In/Exploitation Challenge April 1-30, 2016
Ice Cube is a tough one. I'm kind of leaning towards him being a legit actor. The category was more intended to catch the stunt casting of musicians like Prince, Vanilla Ice, Ringo Starr, Mick Jagger, David Bowie, etc. Then there are those like Will Smith who got into the business as musicians but moved on to be primarily actors. Elvis made a couple dozen movies, but they were B-movie vanity projects with him still singing the soundtracks (basically long form Music Videos) and he is still primarily considered a musician.

But then again, they just made a movie about his music career. I don't think I would object to counting him.

Is eschploitation including these kind of faith-based films like Pure Flix's new God's Not Dead 2?

Anyway, this film will count based on its 13% RT score. It looks hilariously bad, but I think Ray Wise will make the ticket worthwhile as he hams it up.

Re: Seventh Annual Drive-In/Exploitation Challenge April 1-30, 2016
Yeah, I would consider that in the eschploitation category. Technically, the category is for end-times films like If Footmen Tire You, What Will Horses Do? and such, but I consider it looser and count any religious exploitation. This would be God's Not Dead, Expelled no intelligence allowed, Kirk Cameron Saves Christmas, and even The Ledge which is an Atheist exploitation film.

This brings up the question of other films. Some are obvious, like the Left Behind films or God's Not Dead, but it's subjective. It really should have some exploitative element to it. I consider Mel Gibson's The Passion to be exploitative where King of Kings is not. Scorsese's Last Temptation of Christ would count where Zeffirelli's Jesus of Nazareth might not (when I saw LToC it back in 1988 we had to evacuate the theater in the middle of the film because of a bomb threat!). Ben Hur or The Robe really aren't exploitative but DeMille's Samson and Delilah might be. Although, DeMille like to exploit Bible stories to get away with sex and violence, I think they might be outside the spirit of the challenge if not the law.

Are the mods in here playing some sort of cruel April Fools' prank? 'B-Movie' is missing from the title!

Nah, I did that. They still count, but I just emphasized the Drive-in and Exploitation angle. We're down 10 participants below our average but it also was the category that confused the most people. So it's a trade off.

I thought it was an inside joke, and you just kept changing the challenge's title as a nod to the way drive-in movies get a new title before every re-release.

No, but I wish I HAD thought of that. The first challenge WAS the First Annual B-Movie/Exploitation/Drive-in Movie Challenge.

Quote: I can't tell if people just want to crap on a new movie, or if it's really that hard to find older qualifying movies to watch.

A couple of seconds on Google gives you plenty of "Batman" and "Superman" stuff.

Thanks for the links Dimension X. To get my challenge going I tried out this one which is Betmen Yarasa Adam or Turkish Batman. There weren't any subtitles so I missed some of the more subtle plot points but there was a surprising amount of nudity and this Dynamic Duo were very acrobatic in the fight scenes which I appreciated. They also like to spend their down time in a "gentleman's club". There was some other pretty crazy stuff and it ran just over an hour, so not an big time investment.

Sorry, movies with subtle plot points are ineligible for this challenge.

I don't think The Hot Spot took place at Lake Minnetonka. Wait, maybe we're still talking about Purple Rain?

I'm going to check that one out myself sometime soon.

Sad to hear that we're down in participants, but I guess this inevitable as the internet becomes increasingly crowded. I hope to be doing this particular challenge for as long as I can. That being said, I'm on to my second film right now and I'm happy that this is starting on a weekend for a change.

My wife's home recovering from full knee replacement surgery and I'm also staying home for the duration of her recovery (anticipted 4-6 weeks) as her nurse/monitor/helper. Because of that I was able to get off to a strong start with a viewing of the full 13 episodes of the serial Lost City of the Jungle (1946) starring Lionel Atwill, Keye Luke, and Jane Adams, who played Vicki Vale in 1949s Batman and Robin serial as well as performing in a few classic Universal horror titles. It was a good one with which to start. Acting is mostly good with cliffhangers that don't cheat all that much but it *does* suffer from huge chunks of repeated dialog and exposition. I was surprised to find there's no "Here's what's happened up to now" scroll/synopsis beginning each episode which is most likely why there was so much exposition each "week." There's a very short bit at the San Franciso offices of the United Nation that gives you a *bit* of needed info but it's then off to the last couple of minutes of the prior week's episode. I enjoyed seeing Atwill, Luke in something other than the Charlie Chan films, and Adams. Lost City of the Jungle is the penultimate serial produced by Universal. Their last was The Mysterious Mr. M (1946) which I don't believe has seen a DVD release.

I'm now off to start Jungle Jim, one I've wanted to see for some time. As a kid I liked the movie series with Johnny Weissmuller and have never seen the serial.

I think I watched that on the very first challenge here (Back when it was streaming on Netflix) Wasn't disappointed at all Easily my favorite film by Mr. Wood....Despite not taking credit for a couple of certain inserts in that movie.

I'm really eager to see how 1080p-Exterminator 2 looks on my 4k TV. Even more eager to see how the blu-ray for Basket Case looks when I pop that in around midnight.

BTW, a swell blaxpo double-feature is coming up on TCM Underground: Abar-Black Superman & Shaft in Africa. The latter's actually my favorite of that trilogy.

Now for Dangerous Money (1946)

How about adding Vanity (RIP) to the actor list? Practically everything she was in qualifies - Action Jackson, Tanya's Island, Terror Train, The Last Dragon...

4. Perils of the Sentimental Swordsman (1982)[/B]-Even though I had no idea what was happening, this still ended up being more memorable than the other "Sentimental Swordsman" movie I saw. (DVR)
There are three Sentimental Swordsman movies - The Sentimental Swordsman (1977), The Return of the Sentimental Swordsman (1980), and, as mentioned, Perils of the Sentimental Swordsman (1982).

If you thought these were difficult to follow try the Brave Archer series (made about the same time), The Brave Archer (1977), The Brave Archer 2 (1978), and The Brave Archer 3 (1981) or something like The Bloody Parrot (1981) or Portrait in Crystal (1983). The One-Armed Swordsman series, One-Armed Swordsman (1967), Return of the One-Armed Swordsman (1968), The New One-Armed Swordsman (1971) and all directed by Chang Cheh, would probably be more to your taste. The difference being that these aren't wuxia, they're straightforward martial arts swordplay movies. If you're feeling really adventurous find Intimate Confessions of a Chinese Courtesan (1972, Chor Yuen), it's a practically perfect exploitation movie.
