Assume that all of these are available to all customers unless specifically listed as member only like the Welcome Package. Also remember that any preliminary codes are just that and BN could pull it, change the details or exclusions anything prior to release so always a bit of YMMV until the final release date

Mini FAQ
Coupons should not work for PREORDERS , Nook, Legos, Rosetta Stone, Digital, Gift Cards, Memberships, etc. There are glitches where sometimes an excluded item will be allowed but assume that is the exception to the rule
Free Shipping is $25 (before tax/shipping) or with membership.
Max 3 GC on a single online order.
Online only a single code can be applied to an order
Return period is 14 days after delivery (possibly 30 days for members though I've never tried)
Online ordered items can returned to a local store unless it's classified as a web-only item then it's at the store's discretion to accept
The long standing Free 60 day Trial Offer was discontinued in late May 2016

Seventh Annual Drive-In/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge April 1-30, 2016

presents

The Challenge

Reserve your spot over at the list thread.

LIST THREAD

As with most challenges, the goal is to reach 100 movies. Your own goal might be higher or lower. Challenge begins April 1, 2016, 12:00 am EDT (or Dusk March 31) and ends April 30 at dawn (that is, the morning of May 1).

Sex, violence, torn-from-today's-headlines shockers, fast cars, faster pussycats, psycho killers and kids run wild — throw a few (or all) of these ingredients into a pot, let the whole thing boil over, and you have the recipe for some tasty exploitation cinema.

What kinds of films are we talking about? Well, there is no hard and fast rule. This one is largely up to you.

What is a B-Movie?

A B movie is a low-budget commercial motion picture conceived neither as an arthouse film nor as pornography. In its original usage, during the so-called Golden Age of Hollywood, the term more precisely identified a film intended for distribution as the less-publicized, bottom half of a double feature. Although the U.S. production of movies intended as second features largely ceased by the end of the 1950s, the term B movie continued to be used in the broader sense it maintains today. In its post-Golden Age usage, there is ambiguity on both sides of the definition: on the one hand, many B movies display a high degree of craft and aesthetic ingenuity; on the other, the primary interest of many inexpensive exploitation films is prurient. In some cases, both are true.

What is an exploitation movie?

Exploitation film is a type of film that is promoted by "exploiting" often lurid subject matter. The term "exploitation" is common in film marketing, used for all types of films to mean promotion or advertising. These films then need something to exploit, such as a big star, special effects, sex, violence, romance, etc. An exploitation film, however, relies heavily on sensationalist advertising and broad and lurid overstatement of the issues depicted, regardless of the intrinsic quality of the film. Very often, exploitation films are of low quality in every sense. However, this has not always been the case. Exploitation films sometimes attract critical attention and cult followings.

Rules

The Goal is 100 films. These type of films tend to be short, but they also might be a challenge to get through. Your personal goal might be higher or lower, depending on your tolerance for this type of cinema.

A film can only be counted once per list with the exception of riffed/commentaried films (see below).

This challenge is for Movies. Although we are not allowing TV shows, Made for TV Movies are allowed as are Direct to Video features.

We are allowing documentaries on B-Movies, Exploitation and Drive-ins and those involved with the production thereof. These should be features over 40 minutes.. We are also allowing trailer compilations, such as 42nd Street Forever and Something Weird compilations. Compilations should be at least an hour.
Throw a viewing party and show trailers between movies.

Mystery Science Theater 3000, Riff Trax, Cinematic Titanic, etc. are allowed. If there is a second riffed version (for example, MST3K did one, then Cinematic Titanic did the same movie) you may watch the second and any additional riffed versions for a full credit each, but I encourage you to just watch another movie, instead.

Commentaries. All commentaries count as views.

Films that have been nominated for Oscars are discouraged but not banned. I had originally wanted this to be the only hard rule, but I came across too many exceptions.

Drive-In exception rule: Any film seen in an actual Drive-In during the challenge 2016, regardless of other qualification, counts toward your list.. Please note that it was a Drive-In Movie.

Mini-series and Serials: We will go with the Sci-Fi rule on TV Mini-series (one "night" equals an entry), on Serials (we'll go with an hour's worth per entry), provided they actually were theatrical serials. A serial episode is about 15-20 minutes, so an hour's worth counts as an entry. Four-15 minute ones or Three-20 minute episodes. You can round up. This goes for other shorts and compilations as well.

There are 3 Wild Cards for non-conforming films. These are ones that are close but may have some doubts about.

For fun, keep a running tally of "before they were famous" appearances in your list.

Please number your lists. Also, it is helpful to put a link to your list in your signature. This makes it easier for others to check out your list.

Please tally your totals including "new views" at the end of the challenge.

"I still don't understand what kinds of movies you are talking about."

This list is not exclusive nor definitive, but these are the most representative movies for the challenge:

See below a list of filmmakers and actors that by their very presence make a film "safe". While some of these people (actors especially) might have some exceptions in their credits (like Star Trek for William Shatner), generally films with the listed creative talent are safe for the challenge. Questions? Ask in the thread.

Safe Lists
The following lists are Automatic Safe lists. They are not definitive and there might be exceptions therein, especially concerning Distributors. Generally, the presence of those on the lists in an actual creative capacity (that is, more than just a cameo or bit part. For instance, Bruce Campbell appearing in Spider-Man does not make Spider-Man safe) is enough to make a film safe. Got more? Post them and I'll update the list. Obviously, films not including these participants are safe, too. Update: I added several new names to the actors list. Some of these actors appeared in actual big budget Hollywood fare, but most of their career was in B-Movies, then obviously discard the Big Hollywood movies and just watch the B's (For example, William Shatner. Ignore Star Trek movies but anything else is fair game. Or Patrick Swazye. Ghost is probably not right, but most of his other films were B-Movies).

Automatic Safe list:
Code:
Directors/Producers:
Code:
Actors:
Code:
Distributors/Studios:
Code:
(Some more theatrical ones, with samples of their output)

Re: Seventh Annual Drive-In/Exploitation Challenge April 1-30, 2016

I'm sure this has been covered, but how would you like us to count something like Drive-In Delirium (a four-disc set of trailers - 12 hours total)? Each disc as one item? Or the whole set? Or should we follow the Mini-series and Serials rule, and count each hour watched? - In which case, each disc would be 3 items.

I'm for each disc being an item (even though that's about 3 hours of stuff). It's the easiest way to keep track of what was watched.

Now that I've asked, I probably won't even get around to watching a complete disc.

I counted each disc as a seperate item, since each disc is about 3 hours long. Since I've all burned through all three sets on previous challenges, this year's trailer compilation is going to be Kung Fu Trailers of Fury. Just noticed that I didn't watch disc 4 of Volume 3 (Retro Rampage) last year, so I guess I'll finish that off, too.

I doubt I'll watch all four discs in the first volume, let alone start on the second or third. I watched Something Weird's Extra Weird a couple of years back (it's a three and a half hour long trailer comp), and I just remember thinking afterwards that I could've watched two or three movies in that time instead.

Since these are separated into different categories, it'll be easier to watch in smaller doses if I want to, and to remember where I stopped.

Re: Seventh Annual Drive-In/Exploitation Challenge April 1-30, 2016

Good question. I usually count per disk, like the 42nd Street comps or Something Weird. I've also compiled my own sets from various sources and watch during my movie parties. Three hours is quite a bit, especially in PAL. I'd almost be tempted to count the segments, as long as they reach an hour.

Things are looking up with so many good new titles for this challenge in the past few months and many more on the horizon. Hopefully in the next few days I'll get to sorting through and deciding on some that I want to feature in my challenge this year. As always, I'm stoked.

Added.

Exploitation.tv looks to be good for the challenge. It has Vinegar Syndrome's whole catalog. Worth the $7 for the month.

I should have read the rules. Concerning the trailer comps, it's dealt with in the rules.

I thought about trying it out, but I have enough stuff to keep me busy for a month already without adding more to the mix.

I did read them, and I missed it.

I'll probably still go with 1 disc = 1 entry for Drive-in Delirium, since coyoteblue did it that way for that series in past challenges.

Keeps it simple; less counting.

If anyone has a Roku, there are also quite a few free channels with eligible content, including Drive In Classics.

Speaking of trailer compilations, there seem to be quite a few on archive.org:

Drive In Movie Trailer Compilation 1

If you scroll to the bottom of the page you'll see links to more Drive In Movie Trailer Compilations. There seem to be about 9 more and they're all about one hour a pop.

Thanks. I can't find these on the Roku Archive.org channel (it does have a crapload of refreshment stand ads though), so I guess I'll download them sometime and burn them to a DVD.

Trailer Trauma on Blu-ray is a good one. A lot of titles I'd never heard of. It even has THE INCREDIBLE TORTURE SHOW (pre-Bloodsucking Freaks) trailer. Same as the BSF, but with the original title.

Sweet! I just got tickets to see a special screening of Strange Brew in a brewery after dark on March 31st. Gonna have to count it as a B movie I guess!

Trailer Trauma is on my wish list; I'll pick it up in time for next year's challenge. I've already got the blu 42nd Street Forever. Maybe I'll toss a coin to see which I'll watch.

I know the Three Stooges were part of the B Unit of Columbia Studios. Would just their movies count? Or would I be able to count their shorts under the serials rule of counting?

Looks like I'm gonna have relatives staying over for the first few weeks of April. I'll have to wait near the end of the month to see how my grindhouse-cinema looks on my new TV So I might be stuck in my bedroom watching (Mostly) Troma stuff on youtube. I still haven't seen any of the Toxie sequels anyway.

I feel your pain. I watch all my challenge content in my bedroom anyways, because the living room TV is claimed for other uses. Luckily my bedroom TV is HD, only 720, but still, it's something.
