How did you like this? I've heard good things and seem to recall Roger Ebert giving it a recommendation.
A friend of mine has convinced me to write up little mini-reviews of everything new that I see--this is what I wrote about it: Terri is an overweight, friendless high-schooler who lives with his uncle who is in the early stages of Alzheimer’s. He’s chronically tardy to school, and he’s started wearing pajamas instead of street clothes. His erratic behavior gets him called to see the assistant principal, who takes him under his wing to try to help him fit in better. This quirky independent film is exceptionally well-acted by the entire cast, and it has the integrity to not pander to an audience that has come to expect the “underdog who triumphs over all adversity” plotline that seems to permeate a large percentage of high school movies. Terri is definitely a bittersweet film, but chalk its groundedness up to Jacob Wysocki’s performance—his portrayal of Terri is pitch-perfect, never veering into caricature. It’s a winning little film that deserves to have a wider audience. |

Paranoiac (1963) Although Hammer Films are more well-known for their 50s-60s gothic horror films, I've started watching a lot of their suspense movies. For most box sets with the horror titles I was looking for include a few thrillers as well. And so far I've been pretty impressed with some of the little films I found. Of course, it's still Hammer - small budgets and limited sets - but the scripts and directing is rather good. Here, Oliver Reed plays a cruel brother who tries to get his sister commited to the nut house so he can get the full inheritance of their parents. But when someone who claims to be their long-dead third brother turns up, his plan goes awry. |
