Here are some subset ideas:

Public Domain HorrorsMessiah of Evil (1973) [www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVwvvr9HIPs]
Books In the Mouth of Madness (1994) (will update if can find streaming)
Horrors of War (both work for Horrorestate too) – In A Glass Cage (1986) (will look for streaming), House (1986) [www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_VgQ7JIjes]
Police StationNightbreed (1990) (is on Netflix)
Web of HorrorUnfriended (2015) [recent release, should be Redbox accessible if nothing else]
Hell Jigoku (1960) [www.hulu.com/watch/215880] (eligible for cross over with Criterion Challenge)

John Carpenter has never been a checklist feature, how did that happen? Also 'written by Clive Barker' might be ripe for checklist inclusion.

Maniac Cop should have been the police station pick. Last I saw, Hulu had at least one of them.

I like all these ideas but I thought someone already suggested something like Web of Horror or maybe it was already a subset pick.

I was just throwing some ideas out there, only one will maybe end up being used.

Maniac Cop is the obvious choice for police theme... but Nightbreed is such an awesome movie it had to be mentioned.

Web of Horror (internet based) was one of the theme night ideas that Chad originally posted so I suggested one subset possibility if that theme sticks.

Doesn't one of the later Halloween movies deal with the internet? Something about a reality show set in the Michael Myers home.

He was one of the first on the 2011 list when the directors category was added. No way we'd overlook him.

I think I skipped that one but Hellraiser has it's own version starring Lance Henriksen called Hellraiser: Hellworld. It's not great and I'm not sure it isn't one of the sequels where they had an idea for another film and then figured out a way to put Pinhead into it but it certainly feels like it.

I'm going to suggest Samhain: An Evening of Celtic Horror

Many of the Halloween traditions that we are familiar with began in the "Celtic" countries of Scotland, Ireland and Wales. This evening would pay tribute by highlighting films that have a connection to those countries. Many to choose from including THE WICKER MAN, DOG SOLDIERS, BODY SNATCHERS (and all Burke and Hare films), DR. JEKYLL AND MR HYDE, etc.

I'll try and find a link, or if someone wants to compile a list. And B&W was already used a couple years back, but can always be brought back.

We already have 'Halloween-related' as a mainstay, but we can always add it as a sub-category like with were-creatures (shape shifters) being added to werewolves.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 11 Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checkl

And speaking of mainstays, this is what we currently have:
  • Criterion Crossover
  • R.I.P. Christopher Lee
  • Werewolves (Full Moon Day)
  • Horror Anthologies
  • Asian Buffet (absent in 2013)
  • Slashers, Giallos & Serial Killers
  • Horror Comedies (absent in 2012)
  • Vampires
  • Zombies
  • Supernatural
  • Demonic/Satanic on 'Devil's Night' (used the last 4 out of 6 years)
  • Halloween-Related (+ Samhain: An Evening of Celtic Horror)

With the exception of Christopher Lee, these are the usual returning themes. Is everyone alright with these coming back? And did I miss anything?

Personally I'm not a fan of the "asian buffet" theme and would prefer to see that switched out with a different region (or topic); perhaps Celtic, Spanish, or Italian horror. Maybe some unique significance of asian horror is lost on me or I'm overlooking something.

Yeah, how about just a foreign night where one must watch a horror movie in a different language (with subtitles if they please)?

Dig deeper into the "Asian Buffet" category because there's an entire world (and decades upon decades) of amazing Asian horror films that have nothing to do with the run of films that made J-horror famous in the US about a decade ago such as The Ring, The Grudge and so on.

I totally agree; however the same could be said for many other regions - Germany, Italy, Spanish, etc. Asia is a large geographic region but if we want to get into deeper digging then seemingly it could be swapped out with European, Canadian, etc regions that also have plentiful horror output especially if we go into less mainstream titles (which I assume is the point of 'asian buffet' night).

Exactly! Why should one culture be favored over another? Just make it international night or switch it up each year for a different region.

Maybe I've just been oblivious but I stumbled on a horror subgenre that I hadn't heard of before called "Psycho-Biddy," aka "Grande Dame Guignol" or "Hag Horror." Movies from 1960s-1970s about insane/bitter older women with glamorous past that have turned villainous; typically vehicles for older notable actresses that have aged out of mainstream cinema. It's amusing to me that this subgenre exists because it's reverse of scream queens but might also make a unique checklist item (or theme night).

Well, whatever is decided, these are the other regions we've covered globally in the past:

Passport to Sheer Terror! - European Horror (This was during the first year before hyperlinks were included, aside from the sole Lovecraft one).

British Fright Cinema - Hammer, Amicus & Ealing (Also during the first year.)

Outback Chillers & Kiwi Killers - Australian / New Zealand

Ooh! Scary, eh? - Canadian Horror Films

‘Mierda Espantosa! - Spanish Horror Films

Bavas, Argentos and Fulcis, Oh My! - Italian Horror Films

Viking Decapitation Via Windmill - NetherHorror Vs. Norwegian Horror

And BFI's 100 European Horror Films ...if that counts.

I don't think there is ..that is, unless Africa and Antarctica have a thriving horror scene I don't know about. ;) South Africa is slim pickings.

But among that list doing European horror would probably make the most sense being it was during the first year of theme nights when it wasn't very popular, because it didn't have a hyperlink attached. And a good chunk of British only horror would be covered by the Christopher Lee theme.

I could do something along the lines of the Asian Buffet only with European horror and divide it among the countries with links for each. Just an idea.

Instead of throwing it open to pretty much everything that came out in the '80s, why not pick a company (Media, or Lightning, or Gorgon, or whatever) to provide a little more focus?

Here's a link to a list of various companies, and clicking on each of them brings up a link to a list of all of their releases.

Thoughts?

Pretty much what I suggested last year here.
and here's another helpful link of 1980s video companies criticonline.com

I'd say it's about time for an encore; hasn't been used since 2009, and Poe since 2010. And wouldn't be a bad idea to combine the two because neither produce that many entries ...at least compared to the usual themes.

Also, just wanted to reiterate that I'm reserving the suggestions on post 2 for new suggestions only. That's why this one and others aren't being added, but ALL of the suggestions are definitely being heard. Promise.

It looks pretty promising that this will make a return, so we eventually need to decide on what studio/distributor we're gonna go with.

European Passport to Terror (or whatever it ends up being called) - France, 2, 3 / Italy, 2 / Netherlands / Norway / Sweden / Great Britain / Spain / Russia / Austria / Belgium / Czech Republic / Denmark / Finland / Germany / Greece / Hungary / Ireland / Luxembourg / Poland / Portugal / Romania / Turkey / BFI's Euro 100

Is this a suitable replacement for the 'Asian Buffet of Terrors'? Thoughts??????????????????????
