No, I'm not that crazy. Just wanted to stir up some activity since its been a little slow going in here the last couple of days.

Ironically we did actually have a found footage theme a few years back, and it wasn't super popular.

I was really about to cry lol. I was actually ok with Found Footage, but the rest was going to be pretty unbearable.

Too bad Ingrid Bergman didn't have any genre credits outside of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde because today would have been her 100th birthday. Theme permit denied. :(

That brings us to 13 volunteers, and 3 I've overlooked.

^Forgot about that one. Recorded it on TCM yesterday, and still haven't caught either version.

And we have a new round of themes to make the cut (for real)...
  • Schools Out ...Forever (revolving around school reunions, high school, private school or college)
  • Occult Detectives
  • Fierce Fungi, Fruit, Flowers, Flora (Evil Trees & Plants)
  • Web of Horror (revolving around the internet and computers)
  • "Vs." Horror Films

Unfortunately those last four present somewhat of a problem ...either the lists don't provide enough entries (occult detectives, evil trees & plants, web of horror) -or- there's just too much crap (Vs.).

For every "Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil" you've also got a bunch of SyFy channel crap that I doubt most want to see. A lot.

There you go. We've done it a few times before; a good example is when we paired up "Native American Horror" with "Horror Westerns" a couple years back. And it's pretty obvious these four are pretty much polar opposites, so it'll be another random mashup. Suggestions always welcome.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 11 Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checkl

Nice, some of my choices made the list. Let's hope the others do lol.

While for every amazing film, there's a lot of crap, there really does need to be one gem that hasn't been covered by us. Hell, I hated Freddy vs Jason my first go around, but am willing to give it another try if it so happens to be the movie of the night.

For adding things together, one can do Schools Out Forever and Web of Horror. I mean, look at this horror movie that came out this summer I believe. Revolved around a Skype chat and all high schoolers. While it isn't a reunion, it did revolve online and if someone did die, well school will certainly be out forever lol.

Maybe mash "Vs." with Detectives somehow, via dragging in things like Holmes "versus" Jack the Ripper...? If "vs." were broadened to include specific policemen/detectives going after specific villains it could fit together loosely.

A reminder to go to POST 2 and vote for your favorite themes.

The only limit is one vote per theme, but you can vote for as many overall themes as you want. Also, if you voted early on, there's a good chance suggestions were added since then, so check those out and vote for some more. The last one was just added a couple days ago.

I'll cast some new votes for:

Religious Horror
Blood & Snow
Bats, Cats & Rats

Monstrous Births
Tiny Terrors
Household Horrors - Attics and Basements Edition
Caves of Horror
Bats, Cats and Rats
a Wes Craven day

I much prefer this suggestion of expanding limited items to more general terms rather than mix-matching two random topics together. Maybe there's some future qualification we can place for theme night ideas (i.e. must cover 150+ films, etc).

I vote for:

Blood And Snow
Horrorestate (just realized haunted houses are used in the Free Admission theme so I'll say Theaters and Chapel Of Horror also sound good.)
Crazy Love
Don't Go In The Basement/Attic
Extrasensory Perception And Psychokinesis
Bats, Cats, And Rats
LGBT Horror

I checked back over subset picks, and, oddly enough, we've only used two of Craven's films in the past -- A Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream. That leaves plenty of other good (and several not-so-good) films left from which to choose.

If thats the case, then don't even use it. I suggested it for Vs movies... not vs movies with detective tags.

There are atleast 25 movies on that list with a higher then 5 IMDB rating. There is more then enough films, Cockneys vs Zombies was the one I was going to check out since I heard it was good.

Yeah, I said the same thing about this year's after completing last year's list. Thankfully there's plenty to go around, and hopefully the same holds true next year.

Also, that makes you subset volunteer #14.

A few more themes that are now official:

Chapel of Horror (takes place in/have a memorable scene in a church and/or stories which revolve around nuns or priests)

Crazy Love (Strange romantic relationships on film)

Blood and Snow (takes place in winter/snow/cold)

Better (well, "different") ideas followed; panic not.

Another thought - if smaller categories are combined (or expanded), why not place their days on the weekend?

Then the craz.. completists can re-split them and watch a film for each original category; everyone else can pick or choose from the wider options available. :)

It looks like I once again forgot to include the very one I originally forgot to include:

Bats, Cats, and Rats is now official.

I'll try and post everything we have up to this point once I'm back on my home computer later tonight.

Also, I just came to the realization that we did 'ESP/Psychic Abilities' 2 years ago. That's mighty similar to our current 'Extrasensory Perception and Psychokinesis'. How do we keep overlooking these duplicates? Oh well.

I'll definitely take it into consideration. As of now the only weekend spot that's filled is for the 80s video companies. Horror comedies also opened up a spot since being moved to 11/1 (Sun).

Scratch that. We need to move things along. We're roughly 2 weeks ahead of last year's schedule, and that's a good place to be. I have more than enough feedback, so I'm going to go ahead and stitch together a completed list. It might require the assistance of random.org, but it wouldn't be the first time. I'll post it soon, and then we can move right on to the subset list. And little things such as deciding on what day a particular theme should go can be decided while we're working on the other stuff.

In the meantime, feel free to give feedback on whether the 1980s Video Companies should be a single studio/distributor or everything like last year. And if it's the former, throw out a vote for the company you want:

You pick, or get assigned, one of the 33 theme night categories.

Then from that theme, you pick an interesting horror movie for everyone to watch. That film becomes the subset pick for that night. Try to pick one that is on Netflix or AmazonPrime or YouTube or is otherwise somewhat easy to find.

Oh, and I think we try to pick one that has never been chosen before.

I could be wrong or forgetting something, so someone please correct me.

Trevor's right on all counts. A list of all of the previously-chosen subset picks are in the second post of this thread, if I'm not mistaken.

My big piece of advice is to only to pick a film that you've seen and you know is good. I picked one several years ago without having watched it first, and I regretted it considerably afterwards. It was NOT a film that I would have recommended if I had seen it before picking it.

And while I'm at it, I'll put in my yearly plea for picking subset films that have some sort of critical cachet or classic status accorded to them. As I mentioned last year, why have everyone waste his or her time on a crappy movie when there are so many GOOD movies that we haven't had as subset picks yet?
