Marnie (1964) - I did not care for the film. I'm not a huge fan of Hedrin and this didn't change my mind (I didn't like her in The Birds either - but that's another Hitchcock film I don't care for). The first time she reacted to something "red" I laughed at how ridiculous the scene/situation played. Then it's repeated several more times in various settings. The scenes with her mother just don't play "true" feeling somewhat contrived. Connery was his usual charming self but I feel his talents were mostly wasted. I saw the main setup for the film as soon as Hedrin's character showed up at Connery's character's offices looking for work. For the next hour and a half it was all downhill as the film *slowly* proceeded to the expected payoff. I think this one would have worked better as a hour or half-hour TV episode but it's still nothing I'd want to endure. The film *is* well directed, shot, edited, and scored but that's not enough for me. That's another to add to my growing pile of Hitchcock films I do not care for.

I hadn't heard of this one, but it sounds interesting.

I really enjoyed Blow Out. It reminds me that I need to watch more of my unwatched Criterion discs that I've picked up over the years.

I pick How to Train Your Dragon because I thoroughly enjoyed it and think it is definitely worth watching.

I watched Dawn of the Dead (2004) and it was pretty good for a zombie movie. Zombie movies are my least favorite but Dawn of the Dead was worth watching. There were some really great scenes that I enjoyed.

My list:
1. Silver Linings Playbook (2012)
2. The Identical (2014)
3. Frankie & Alice (2010)
4. Gimme Shelter (2014)
5. On the Town (1949)
6. This is Spinal Tap (1984)
7. We Are What We Are (2013)
8. White Bird in a Blizzard (2014)
9. The Paperboy (2012)
10. Lawless (2012)

Movies I've watched
Spoiler:

1. Stand By Me
2. Breakfast at Tiffany's
3. Rain Man
4. Dawn of the Dead

Now I don't feel so weird. I liked the TV version better. Same with No Time for Sergeants, which is also in the tv set. Like the movie, it also stars Andy Griffith. I tried watching the movie because I liked the TV play but I couldn't get into it at the time.

The 8 Diagram Pole Fighter (1984) was a pretty good Shaw Brothers film. *Full* of pole fighting action with a opening and closing that have to be seen to believe! The plot is fairly typical of a revenge film but plot is not why you watch this one. The action is almost non-stop.

Pretty good?! I often argue that it's the single greatest kung fu film ever made. There's an air of melancholy throughout, no doubt generated by the fact that Fu Sheng died in a car crash during production (ten years to the month after Bruce Lee died) and his character goes made during the course of the action. The story is that Kara Hui Ying Hung, one of the Yang sisters, had to take over Fu Sheng's role in the final battle. It's also based on the true story of the Yang Clan, who were nearly wiped out in a battle with invading something-or-others (Tartars? Manchus? Mongols? I forget which.) It's the most tragic-feeling kung fu film I've ever experienced.

I wouldn't be so sure about that! Many of my friends tend to think I'm weird...

I really like No Time for Sergeants but haven't seen the TV play. The film can feel a bit slow at times with Griffith's character becoming a bit annoying on occasion, much like the unofficial TV counterpart (well... same general concept) Gomer Pyle. Did you know there was a TV series "No Time for Sergeants?" It aired on ABC for one season in 64-65, the same year Gomer Pyle premiered. I've never seen it - we were watching The Andy Griffith Show on CBS.

Never knew it turned into a series. I never got into The Andy Griffith Show but I did get into Gomer Pyle.

I've heard that quote from Deliverence since it came out. People talked about the scene and a bit about the film but that one scene is all most people mentioned. It was uncomfortable and I really wanted *one* of the pair to fight back. Before and after that scene it was mostly boring but somewhat interesting at the same time. The time spent went faster than I'd expected and overall the film was entertaining enough I'd watch it again.

El Cid (1961) is a film I'd wanted to see for years. It did not disappoint! Heston is his usual commanding self and a good choice for the role of El Cid. It is very nice to watch one of the old "road show" presentations of a classic film. There's something about the grand vistas with, literally, a cast of thousands that just can't be duplicated by a CGI production. If it wasn't so long (just over 3 hours) and my backlog so large I'd consider watching it again today or later this week.

Those of you keeping score will notice I replaced El Cid with *another* Hitchcock film. I've seen, and liked, the *first* version of this one Hitchcock directed and have always been curious about the remake - especially since it has Doris Day in a rare dramatic role.

A Fish Called Wanda was absolutely hysterical. Everybody was fantastic, but Kevin Kline stole the show as a sociopathic intellectual-poser. Every violent outburst had me laughing. I also loved the black comedy segments featuring Michael Palin as an animal lover trying to kill an elderly woman. While some parts caused me to cringe (my family has Yorkies), it was very funny. It was also nice to see Geoffrey Palmer and Stephen Fry show up in very brief cameos.

I've replacing the film with Pedro Almodovar's Volver, a film that I've not seen despite being a huge fan of both the director and Penelope Cruz.

I Sell the Dead was fine to watch once, maybe twice with friends, but it seemed like just a bunch of different grave robbing skits with light humor, put together while you wait for Ron Perlman to be Ron Perlman. Worth a rental but not something I'd buy.

I didn't find it hard to watch. I just had to find the time for a 3-hour movie when I was in the mood for something serious. And although the movie was long, there isn't anything that can be cut to make it shorter.

It probably helped to have a knowledge of history. When the opening title card said, "Prague, 1968", I knew what was coming.

There's a social networking site where the relationship status tab gives you a choice of "Single" "Married" and "It's complicated." These people live in the world of "It's complicated." But they're a lot more graceful about it than, say, Jules and Jim.

And, yes, I've always thought that Juliette Binoche is cute.

I own that album but don't really recall much about it other than I liked the first better. Even the first tends to wear thin after a few listenings.

That pretty much echoes other comments/reviews I've read about that one. Looks like it's coming off the purchase list in spite of the very low ($4.50) purchase price. Thanks!

The third album is them redoing the first one. It's pretty awful. Imagine some small indie band somehow got the music rights and then proceeded to remix the originals because they don't understand why Spinal Tap was popular for what it is. The only twist to this story is that the band that did it was Spinal Tap.

Good. I own the Kubrick set and I've gotten so far as pulling it off the shelf a few times over the years but could never get past that. I don't know a thing about it, so that's probably why it was so easy to put back.

That happened to me too. Lolita was the last movie I watched out of the Kubrick set.

^With I Am Legend on your list I have to ask if you've seen the first filmed version of Matheson's novel I Am Legend, The Last Man on Earth, starring Vincent Price? Or the second, The Omega Man, starring Charlton Heston?

I did watch The Last Man on Earth for the horror challenge a couple of years ago, but have not yet seen The Omega Man.

You're on a crime spree... I almost said I Am Legend but as you're doing the History Challenge Bonnie and Clyde fits better. Maybe you'll get IAL next month. I have a copy of Bonnie and Clyde unopened on the shelf but I've seen the film a couple of times. It's quite good.

I really enjoyed Ninotchka - but I'm a fan of Ernst Lubitsch as well as Greta Garbo so it was a natural. I'd been holding this for far too long! The general plot reminded me of both The Iron Petticoat (1956) with Bob Hope, and Jet Pilot (1957) with John Wayne. After seeing this I have to believe both films got their inspiration from Ninotchka.
