American Beauty knocked my socks off when I saw it in theaters. I saw it again years later, and it was fine but not nearly as impactful as I remembered. Maybe the style or voice was innovative for the time but not so much as the years passed--I dunno. There was definitely humor, but that was more of a break from the bleakness of it all.

But that last hour seemingly had *no* breaks from the bleakness. I was so down after it ended that I didn't go back to my MYO "I Spy" challenge but put in S5 of the British Men Behaving Badly to get a few needed laughs and lighten my mood. It was such a downer that I intentionally replaced it with a "comedy" in my list.

I enjoyed it, but I have to say that I did like the remake better. Perhaps it is just that I saw the remake first.

Mr. Vampire reminded me when I went through a Chinese horror phase a little over 10 years ago with Netflix. This was one of the better ones and really wish they'd release them again as a complete set in blu-ray but I'd also settle for dvd. My wife said she watched them all as a kid and while the series started out good, it started to wear out when it came to the comedy.

I also screwed up on this pick. When I went to watch the movie, I remembered Bob talking about Night of the Living Dead, so I watched that. Then when I finished, I remembered that wasn't the pick at all. I thought it was close but no cigar. I didn't buy Barbara going from hysterical female that can't talk to strongest lead in the film. I also listened to the end of the commentary and I don't know if it's just this part or Savini does this regularly, but he was describing the last scene and there was a guy mixed in with the crowd taking pictures. You were 1) supposed to notice him in the crowd, even though he didn't stand out and 2) realize that the snapshots at the very end were supposed to be the pictures he was taking. I'm glad I sold the blu-ray before I opened it, since it had the awful blue tint to it, which would have made it hard to see anything since most of this takes place in the dark. I now plan on ditching my dvd as well.

I finally watched The Legend of the Seven Golden Vampires

When I first heard about this unlikely joint venture between the Hammer and the Shaw brothers studios I knew I had to see it, so I bought a copy, shelved it and forgot about it until now.

The movie features some great martial arts choreography and vampires getting dusted Buffy style, but in slow motion! In short, I loved it! Cushing leads what is essentially a vampire hunting safari in China, so the pith helmet was appropriate.

It's a British style. Search eBay for British pith helmet and you will find it!

David Chiang and Shih Szu are also in it, two great Shaw Bros. stars of the time. Hammer also made another movie with Shaw Bros. around that time, CALL ME SHATTER, with Stuart Whitman and Ti Lung (David Chiang's frequent onscreen partner in kung fu movies) and kung fu diva Lily Li. Whitman seems really out of place wandering around the back alleys of Hong Kong and sticking out like a sore thumb, although that might have been the intent.

When I looked at the IMDB listings for your selections I thought that might be the case. After your comments I went looking for a copy as I, too, enjoy The Legend of the Seven Golden Vampires. Man! It's a "bit" pricey (~$28 for a used copy). I'll hold off and hope for a price drop...

I got Shatter as part of a 2-fer along with The Abominable Snowman (there's a mis-match if there ever was one!). I agree with your comment on Whitman. He doesn't fit the film at all. His presence throws me off enough that I really didn't care for that one. ...Golden Vampires was a much better and more fun film but in all fairness I've only seen Shatter once.

Did you know both those films were part of a three film deal between Hammer and The Shaw Brothers? The third film was never made.

The price history for the first one on Amazon looks like used prices drop down to $15-ish fairly often.

It was more an issue of drinking, having a few days lapse, and then vaguely remembering what you posted. My fault entirely.

I enjoyed The Iron Giant a lot more then i thought i would. I always heard it was depressing but maybe after grave it wasnt so bad and left on a happy note. Its always refreshing watching a movie that doesnt need 2 hours to tell its story

I had a hard time selecting a film for you but finally settled on: Superman: The Movie. While there are a few segments in the film I don't care for (Kal-El comes out of the spaceship as a ~3 year old, the overly long flying sequence with Superman and Lois, and the deux-ex-machina "ending") the positive greatly outweighs them. When Clark first changes into Superman in Metropolis to save Lois who's fallen out of a helicopter I *still* get goosebumps and a huge smile. Outside the 50s TV series *this* is Superman. Its viewing really needs to be followed immediately by Superman II (preferably the Richard Donner cut but either will do) as both were filmed simultaneously with a eye towards back-to-back releases. It was after Donner was fired from directorial duties that the release got pushed back due to the need for Lester to reshoot much of the existing footage to receive a directorial credit.

Mrs. Miniver (1942) was very good. I've had the disc for some time but just never got around to a viewing. I found it to be a fairly good representation of what most American people thought of as going on in Britain during the start of WWII. Like most war movies of its time it has lots of propaganda type themes but that also makes it a good snapshot of the times. I'm currently watching the shorts included which are outright propaganda films, but also excellent in their content.

I remember seeing MRS. MINIVER at the New-York Historical Society and being quite frustrated with it. I went home afterwards and watched Hitchcock's SHADOW OF A DOUBT, made not long afterwards, with two of the same cast members (Teresa Wright, Henry Travers) and offering a very different view of homefront life (albeit 9000 miles away) that represented quite a contrast with Wyler's rosy view of life under the blitz. Hitchcock showed an idyllic small town untouched by war but rife with stress and evil and threats of violent death. Wyler offered an urban landscape subjected to daily bombings with every inhabitant cooperating, smiling, joking and coping just fine. I just didn't buy it. I couldn't help but think it must have seemed quite dishonest even at the time. But then I have to concede that this is what people wanted to see at that moment. Still, I recommend following a viewing of MINIVER with SHADOW OF A DOUBT and see if it doesn't hit you a different way.

Mr Robinson Crusoe was an entertaining bit of fluff. In a talkie, Douglas Fairbanks deliberately maroons himself in Polynesia to win a bet with his yachting buddies that he can handle it. Within a few weeks, he has built him a palatial residence with hot and cold running water, a zip line for bringing food down the mountain, and a radio. And, of course, a pretty native girl who loves him.

I tried to watch the original and I just couldn't finish it. I'm not sure if it was because it was in black and white or because they were running from Zombies in the cemetery.

Nick should watch The Unbearable Lightness of Being. Not always an easy watch, but good performances and attractive women.

I finished No Business Like Show Business and realized it would have counted for the historical challenge as well. It's one of those "classic days of vaudeville" stories that Hollywood loved in the mid-20th century, and it's practically an Ethel Merman picture, which is great because she's one of those stage stars who didn't do much film. But her voice is so distinctive that I immediately knew who it was. It's always sold in Marilyn Monroe collections though she doesn't appear till later, but I wasn't complaining. One sexy woman! Nice to see Donald O'Connor as well, and hear a bunch of Irving Berlin hits.

I've reworked my list in favor of this month's challenge and might have some more recognizable titles as a result. The irony is that the creator of this challenge lists films that no one should feel bad about not having seen.

If you have the Grit channel, they've been showing McLintock! a lot lately. I was in the middle of it last month and took a break to flip through the channels, and there it was. Only a few minutes behind where I paused my disc.

If I end up getting to pick your choice, I think it's safe to guess what I'll pick. It was pretty good.

FWIW I recognized all of the films in your unmodified list and have seen most of them. But I also lean towards older films anyway...

1. The change is due to matching one of the running challenges.

2. You take care of any existing watch pick a person has done for you. So if someone has chosen a movie for you, you can't just ignore it. You watch it and then update your list when you come back.
