Which version did you end up seeing? There have been so many cuts. I was fortunate enough to see it screened at a local theater in 2010 after the last bit of footage had been found. I believe it was the cut released by Kino on blu-ray.
Actually, I think they may have found more footage since then. I'll have to look into that.

That would be a good addition for next year's checklist.

For those of you who've seen World War Z, what have you thought of it? I might go see it this weekend.

There's also a screening of To Catch a Thief tomorrow afternoon. I wonder if I can wildcard that in some way?

If it's the 1955 version, I don't see how that can be a wild card, sorry.

I just watched the 1980 Flash Gordon on Encore Action. While I know deep down it is not a good movie, I have fond memories of it, as seeing it on tv as a child was my first memories of hearing Queen, when I heard the theme song to the movie.

Also, for those that get Encore, the first V mini series will be aired tomorrow at 10 Eastern time.

Re: 6th Annual Sci Fi/Fantasy Challenge

This morning was rainy and dreary (just like the last two weeks), so I decided to revisit Minority Report. From my Letterboxd diary:

SPOILER ALERT FOR ANYONE READING EMAIL
Spoiler:
I saw Minority Report during its original theatrical run but not since. If you'd asked me before I popped in the DVD to recount it, I could have reconstructed the basics but not many details. Once I actually started to watch it, though, it all came rushing right back. It's funny how that can happen sometimes.

I hadn't considered it when I saw it the first time, but upon this viewing I see a whole lot of parallels with L.A. Confidential. In fact, I'd say that if someone was into detective/noir films but thought they weren't into sci-fi, this would be a safe bet recommendation. At its core, Minority Report is essentially that kind of film rather than pure sci-fi.

The sci-fi aspects do work well, though, in two respects. One, they service the story. There isn't much of a sense of the film taking place in a sci-fi setting just for the sake of it. Instead, the sci-fi elements are either directly utilized by the characters or they function to establish the setting (or both). One obvious part they missed: Changing John's eyeball security access. That would seem a no-brainer to me.

The lone exception for me is the passage of the film where John is first chased. Everything from his racing through traffic to the fight with the other cops with jetpacks through to the Kawasaki factory just feels incongruous with the rest of the film. That 15-20 minutes feels like a turn-of-the-century video game instead of part of the otherwise cerebral/gritty story being told. Especially conspicuous is that scene in the Kawasaki factory, which plays like a retread of the droid factory scene in Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones, which came out just a few months before Minority Report.

Even that wasn't as conspicuous, though, as the tooth in the middle of Tom Cruise's upper row. I saw a captioned photo online a while back that pointed it out and said once you've seen it you'll always see it and they were right. How did I miss that all those years?!

Really good science-fiction addresses social and ethical issues. Sometimes it's through allegory, sometimes through conjecture and anticipation of issues that may arise from advancements. Such is the case here. Any number of discussions about the marriage of technology and the justice system can originate from a viewing of Minority Report and that's the hallmark of interesting storytelling.

Less compelling is a discussion of why Burgess became so sloppy after years of having gotten away with the murder of Anne Lively. He kills Witwer and expects to pin it on John? How did he ever get that past the precogs anyway? He says it's because they can't see anything, but what did that mean? How did he know that? Had he sabotaged them somehow? I don't get how that part actually works within the story.

Oh, and that entire eye surgery section, including the mouldy sandwich and milk? You're a mothersmurfer, Steven Spielberg.

Minority Report was re-ranked on my Flickchart to #398/1522

I watched this within the last year for the first time, though it had been on my radar for quite a while. I really was surprised at how much I enjoyed this. I was drawn in quickly and stayed that way. I hope you watched the "new" version of it-the one with the found footage as that is now the most complete version out there. I especially thought the ending was very well done. I could see this easily being made now and being a success-the themes in this are so universal/timeless.

I have been enjoy the Trek marathon. I have the Blus with the updated special effects and have been pleased with how they were done. I was worried it would stand out as too modern in an old series, but they were very very careful in how they touched up certain things (for example, Scotty was lasering through a wall and in the original, there was no beam. The new scene had a beam.)

I enjoyed Shore Leave as well, though for me, the ending was a bit too quick and too pat. Sure, let's let all our crew down on a planet with no warning that they could be raped and die! But it's ok since the nice aliens will fix 'em right back up again! Who cares that you lived through the trauma, you're right as rain! Balance of Terror was enjoyable as well. I also enjoyed the Romulan's helmets. Though, have the actor who played Sarek as the commander really threw me for a while. I kept on going, that's Sarek. He's not a Romulan, though, right? Until I looked it up and realized he played several roles. The Galileo 7 was ok. I thought that Spock was a bit out of character-he just let Bones and the other crewmen disrespect his authority. I'd think it'd be only logical to follow a chain of command.

I was lucky enough to see a theatrical screening of Metropolis with live organ music. It was a wonderful experience, especially since I love it so much!

Today, I rewatched Star Trek: Generations. I love the concept of having Kirk and Picard meet, but this film is not good. I really want it to be good, but almost nothing works. There is a roundtable discussion on the DVD, and it is amusing to see the speakers try to say nice things about the film. Now, I have three more Next Generation films to watch!

I just finished watching Independence Day, and I noticed something I had forgotten. Jeff Goldblum said the exact same line that he said in Jurassic Park when the T Rex was chasing them when the alien fighters were chasing them.

I'm fairly sure that Mike Judge is not a conscious racist, but Idiocracy has an unpleasant subtext that in 26th-century America, increased proportion of non-white ethnicity leads to decreased IQ.

^---Not really, the movie is very clear about what leads to decreased IQ, any secret racism is something you are projecting on it.

On another note: Just now hitting #20 with X-Men, 1/5th of the way there!

Watch it again and listen to the musical cues and the accents of the announcers in the ads and the Rehabilitation scene. Yes, the film indicates that stupid people outbreeding the intelligent creates the world of Idiocracy, but that world is heavily Latino and African-American. I'm certain the association is unintentional, but it is there.

Surprisingly, I now see that World War Z is NOT labelled as Sci-Fi or fantasy on IMDB or allmovie.com, Does that mean I will need to use a wild card for it?

It's sci-fi according to imdb.com -- you have to go a little further down the page and it shows a few more genre/categories the film falls under. Sci-fi is 4th on the list.

Originally there wasn't any dialogue from Goldblum in that ID4 scene so Emmerich and Devlin got permission to lift the lines from Jurassic Park. A useful nugget of info courtesy of the ID4 commentary track.

The latter is the direction things are moving.

The former is something people have been saying for awhile, every time there's some idiot suing for millions of dollars over something stupid and also the abundance of talk shows that are filled with idiots. Heck, not just talk shows but now we have more and more shows that revolve around idiots(reality tv).

In real life, as in the film, multiple things shape our future but it doesn't necessarily mean there's a connection between them.

I know I'm not suppose to, but I liked Monsters University more than Monsters Inc.

Despicable Me listed as Fantasy but Despicable Me 2 is not! Can it be wild-carded then? I certainly don't see a lot of those little minions running around in real life!

Re: 6th Annual Sci Fi/Fantasy Challenge

Just finished the 1981 version of Clash of the Titans. Love how films can take you back in time. I had seen this movie one other time. I was probably 10 years old, and at a friend's house when this aired on cable. All kinds of other little details about that experience popped into my head simply by watching this today.

The writers did foresee touch-screen computers so that was fun. It was a good show and had decent ratings, but it was on FOX so what can you do.

What are you referring to? CLASH OF THE TITANS had no computers in it, touch-screen or otherwise.

I think it's the (probably) most-complete version. Amazon Prime must have a deal with Kino, because they have several Kino-released titles, so I can only assume it's the version Kino put on blu-ray.

Given the caveat at the beginning, (saying that much of it was restored - and looked GREAT - but that there were segments missing and filled in by new written cards), I was pleased by how little seemed to be missing now.
