Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 7th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/3
I was adding the movies to the Netflix Queue and noticed a couple discrepencies:
These movies show as Netflix streaming, but aren't according to netflix(unless they are becoming available)
[Rec]
Orca: the Killer whale
Grapes of Death
Dr. Renault's Secret
Embodiement of Evil
And these ones show as non-streaming but really are:
Premonition
Hour of the Wolf
Mighty Peking Man
Night of the Comet
Deathdream
Burn,Witch,Burn
Amusement
The Possesion of David O'Rielly

Anyone know of a disease I could catch that lasts Oct 1st to 31st, keeps me in bed and only able to watch TV or post here, and prevents me from doing any wedding work or packing?
Either that, or could you all please suspend this Challenge until next year? This thread and the work Chad has put into getting things ready is all kinds of amazing, and I'm extremely pissed that I'll basically be missing it.
I've procrastinated quite a bit this month, and really have to buckle down and get to work soon. Tempted to pack up my cable modem and televisions and go "Amish" until the wedding, probably the only way that I'll actually get everything done.
Sorry for the personal rant. You all just go back to preparing for the best month of the year and ignore me. I'll be interviewing DJs and going to marriage counseling classes and packing up 473 boxes of DVDs and books and videogames.

Also, I forgot to include in my suggestions about all this that when you interview your DJ, pay attention to how many questions he/she/they ask you, and whether it seems like they're just penciling in Mad Libs or if they're actually making an effort to find out what you really want. If they seem on automatic, bump them to the bottom of your list behind the stoner who says he loves weddings because they're about love, man. It's bad enough DJs on radio stations are just glorified lackeys of corporate programmers; you shouldn't endure that level of impersonal indifference at your own damn wedding.

...Speaking of short video count, it is cheating but last year in a desparate attempt to complete the checklist I was able to knock off many items by pulling up random horror themed shorts on youtube. Attack of some random crudely drawn bunny, living dead carrots, etc... I think that's legal... I think... this year I pledge to legitimately complete the checklist.

I've been getting primed for this challenge by watching horror trailers and drive-in advertisements on YouTube. I particularly like trailers for gialli because they always make the movies look awesomely scary, even if they aren't, and the music is phenomenally eerie:

Not a disease, but I had a pulled groin muscle last year. It kept me out of work from the beginning of August until Labor Day. Much physical activity was extremely limited, so there was lots of couch time. However, the one downside is that it hurt pretty bad, so it was a pleasant way to spend the time.

Not that I'm advocating anything, of course.

Okay, the subset color coding for the streaming titles has been updated.
I also forgot to mention yesterday that I added a 'bonus day' to be used on any day of the month for theatrical films (new and old) on the subset list. Obviously it's not required to finish the list, but it can be used for an extra entry if you happen to miss a day and still allow you to complete it.

I was looking on amazon and noticed they have a bunch of horror collection packs. like the 30-50 movie collections dirt cheap. Are there any actually worth buying? Or are they just a waste of money?

^Those sets consist of PD films with bad to good transfers. Some films are quite fun even if the prints used are not so good. Others are movies so bad it makes you wonder just who green lit the project. If you like "B" films and are tolerant of varying print quality they can be good values for obscure and some not so obscure titles. I own quite a few of those MC sets of varying genres and do not regret the purchase of any of them.
Before you order, check your local Wal-Mart. They've had several of these for $10 the past couple of months. I picked up the "Horror Classics" and "Pure Terror" sets for this challenge as well as to get some "screener" copies of a few titles on the sets. With tax they were under $11 each. Some of these are currently on sale at DD for a bit less than amazon, but more than WM.

Here are some of the more interesting titles on this set:
Blood Sabbath (1972)
Bloody Pit of Horror (1965)
Crucible of Horror (1970)
The Curse of Bigfoot (1978)
The Eerie Midnight Horror Show (1974)
The Embalmer (1965)
Frankenstein 80 (1972)
Guru, the Mad Monk (1970)
The House that Screamed (1969)
The Thirsty Dead (1974)
The Vampire's Night Orgy (1973)
The best thing about this set is that it doesn't contain ANY of the usual PD eyesores that everyone already has three copies each of: no Night of the Living Dead, no House on Haunted Hill, no The Satanic Rites of Dracula, no Last Man on Earth or Little Shop of Horrors or The Devil Bat. And since Mill Creek took over the Crown library, those films are showing up in the multi-pack sets frequently, often letterboxed.
YMMV, but I was pretty pleased with the "Pure Terror" set.

(You've just taken a LOAD of pressure off of my trying to rustle up a copy of Poultrygeist, which is NOT a movie that I plan on blind-buying.)

Anyone seen Cronenberg's Spider? If so, would that qualify for the checklist?

^Alright, thanks. I guess that means I've seen all of his horror films then. Gotta decide which one I'll re-visit again.
