Summer Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge 2011

Challenge Starts July 1st at 12am EST

Challenge ends August 1st at dawn

Rules

Movies/TV shows should be labeled sci-fi or fantasy from either imdb.com or allmovie.com. Other labels don't matter as long as there is at least a sci-fi or fantasy label from one of those sites. Action/Sci-fi would be fine.

If anyone has a problem with something someone watches or just wants an opinion on if it's sci-fi or fantasy or not, ask here.

Sci-Fi/Fantasy documentaries are allowed but not DVD featurettes/interviews.

As with the other challenges, the lists must be numbered or it won't count.

Movies count as 1 entry each.

3 wild cards for all. Use for those shows you want to watch but know they really don't count but they're pretty close or borderline to counting.

TV shows count according to length as they are aired on TV(including commercials):
  • 30 minute shows count as 1/4 an entry
  • 1 hour shows count as 1/2 an entry
  • 2 hour shows count as 1 entry
So you need 4, 30 minute shows for 1 entry or 2 60 minute shows or any combination that gets you to 1 entry. While X-Files has a runtime of around 43 minutes, on-air it's an hour show.

If it's short films that are 10 minutes or less, once you hit 23 minutes of watching them, you've reached one 30 minute show. This is based on the theory that the run time for a 30 minute show is between 22-24 minutes.

For mini series, do count each "day" that it aired (assuming that each day was a 2 hour block). For example, Dune: The Mini Series, would it be:

63. Dune: The Mini Series - Part I
64. Dune: The Mini Series - Part II
65. Dune: The Mini Seriies - Part III

When listing TV shows, keep them together for one entry.
Example:
65. Outer Limits:episode name / Futurama: episode name / Futurama: episode name
How do I list TV shows and other short stuff if I don't have enough for an entry?

At the bottom of your post/list, keep a Temp TV section. Add stuff there until you get enough for an entry.

Watching the movie with the commentary will count as an entry.

Watching multiple versions(theatrical and director's cut) of the same movie will also count.

Show what days you watched whatever it was you watched

Example
July 1:
1. Alien
2. Aliens

July 2:
3. Aliens 3
How to win a prize

There's 4 ways to get an entry:
  1. Participate by watching at least 1 item
  2. Watch 100 items
  3. Start the checklist
  4. Complete the checklist

Prizes

One set of Haunted Casinos shot glasses

2 copies of Damnation, your choice of DVD or Blu-Ray

Strange Tales 20 Movie Pack
Filled with many movies that qualify for this challenge, as well as others

Brainstorm

Sci-fi/Fantasy Radio

I'm treating audio harshly since this is primarily a movie/tv challenge. That being said, one episode, 4 hours with commercials, of Coast to Coast counts as one entry. It's the same format for TV, only doubled. The topic of the show has to be sci-fi/fantasy related, so it shouldn't be that much of a problem with Coast to Coast.

If you're listening to something without commercials, or can skip them, you're looking at 3 hours of audio for one entry.

1/4 entry = 45 minutes without commercials and 60 with commercials.

1/2 entry = 90 minutes without commercials and 120 with commercials.

3/4 entry = 135 minutes without commercials and 180 with commercials.

1 entry = 180 minutes without commercials and 240 with commercials.

* = first-time viewing

July 1
1. Family Guy: "It's a Trap"*--The self-admitted weakest of the trilogy. / Torchwood: Children of Earth: "Day One"--Wanted to watch this again before next week's "Miracle Day."

July 5
5. Torchwood: Children of Earth: "Day Four" / Torchwood: Children of Earth: "Day Five"
July 6
6. The Fury (Brian De Palma, 1978)*--Now that's the way to end a movie--3/5

July 10
13. Mac and Me (Stewart Raffill, 1988)*--As bad '80s movies go, I kinda enjoyed this "E.T." knock-off. Added bonus: a choreographed dance sequence set inside (and outside) a McDonalds--3/5

Re: 4th Annual Summer Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge - List Thread

Indy24LA's 2nd Annual Summer Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge

Indy24LA'a 2010 Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge

Goal 25
* indicates first time viewing

July 1
1. Transformers- Easily the best of the 3, every sequel is a inferior remake of this one.
2. The Blob (1988)- Okay remake, Dillion's hair was far scarier than the monster.
3. Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie- Watched this on my 42 inch Interocitor, great but wow is it short.

July 2
4. Phantoms (1998)- Affleck was the bomb in this, yo.
5. Smallville: Season 6, Episode 21- Prototype/Episode 22- Phantom
6. Flatliners- The potential is there for a great movie, but this is just a good one.

July 3
7. Beneath the Planet of the Apes- More of a rehash of the 1st one with some really crazy 60s sci-fi and political commentary.
8. Planet of the Apes (2001)- Modern day sci-fi (valuing production over commentary), a fun and solid tale.
9. Back to the Future II- An example of trying too hard and having too many ideas, but still a worthy chapter.

July 4
10. Inception- Wow, it really holds up well after all these year.
11. Starship Troopers- I know it's Beverly Hills 90210 in space, but it's wildly entertaining.
12. 9*- Okay little story, the kids really liked it though.
13. Weird Science- Classic Hughes 80's comedy.

July 5
14. Tremors WC- This is a sci-fi monster movie to me, great B movie fun.
15. The Faculty- Nothing original to see here, yet I still like it.
16. Pandorum- One of the most underrated sci-fi movies of the past couple years. Intense!

July 6
17. Jason X- Plays more like TV sci-fi from the 90s, but still enough Jason to pass as a F-13.

July 7
18. Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome- Gave the world the classic line, 'Two men enter, one man leaves'.

July 8
19. The Seventh Sign- Not as good as I remember, a lot slower, but still worth seeing.
20. Stranger Than Fiction- I love this little sleeper of a film, Will Ferrell shows there's more to him than just silly comedy.

July 9
21. Interview with the Vampire- Good for what it is, trying to blend style and action.
22. Smallville*: Season 7, Episode 1- Bizarro/Episode 2- Kara
23. Smallville*: Season 7, Episode 3- Fierce/Episode 4- Cure

July 10
24. Fellowship of the Ring- My fave of the trilogy, hard to believe it's 10 years old.
25. Pleasantville- Starts out strong with an interesting premise but weakens when it goes all Planet of the Apes.
26. Back to the Future III- Departure from the first two with the whole old west motif, good solid entertainment.

July 13
27. Hulk- Slow, moody and different, but I liked it enough.
28. Push- Good clean superheroes vs. the Gov't fun.

July 14
29. Silent Running*- Simple, yet charming, this is 70s sci-fi.

July 15
30. Green Lantern: Emerald Knights*- Good introduction to the world of Green Lantern.
31. Hellboy 2- I enjoyed this much more than the 1st one, del Toro really cut loose.
32. Strange Days*- Pretty enjoyable, except for the over the top LA violence, it got a lot of stuff right.

July 16
33. Vanilla Sky- Very underrated, once you know the premise, it make perfect sense.
34. Hunter Prey*- Pretty good, owes a lot to Enemy Mine including the beard.

July 17
35. Predator 2- Much better than I remembered, again over the top violence, but a nice chapter in the series.
36. Predators- Not the strongest story, but good action and acting make up for it.
37. X-Files: I Want to Believe- More like a long TV episode, good stuff, just not big movie stuff.
38. Ghost- Little dated, but great performances and a nice little story.

July 18
39. Repo Men*- Not bad, but the extreme action and gore felt out of place.

July 19
40. Brazil*- Not my cup of tea, little too much Gilliam.

July 20
41. The Princess Bride- One of the few movies that gets better with every viewing.
42. Hanger 18*- Silly, silly movie and could have been something interesting.
43. The Fisher King- Gilliam's best effort, strong character study.
44. The Day the Earth Stood Still*- Great for it's time, but hard to look past the 50's fx.

July 22
45. Species 4*- So-so entry into this franchise, nothing memorable.

July 23
46. Dogma- Kevin Smith's most even film, great stuff all around.
47. Smallville*: Season 7, Episode 5- Action/Episode 6- Lara

July 24
48. Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace- Whatever they say, this is not a bad movie. Just not the movie they wanted.
49. Fringe*: Season 2, Episode 1- A New Day in the Old Town/Episode 2- Night of Desirable Objects

July 25
50. Red Riding Hood*- Too much like Twilight, but with even worst acting and writing.

July 26
51. Fringe*: Season 2, Episode 3- Fracture/Episode 4- Momentum Deferred

July 27
52. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2*- Great finale to an incredible series.

July 28
53. Fringe*: Season 2, Episode 5- Dream Logic/Episode 6- Earthling

July 29
54. Star Trek The Motion Picture- Very good, played like a longer episode which is right for Star Trek.

July 30
55. Multiplicity- Funny sleeper, surprised this isn't more popular.
56. Face/Off- Over the top and unrealistic, but damn fun.
57. Smallville*: Season 7, Episode 7- Wrath/Episode 8- Blue
58. Smallville*: Season 7, Episode 9- Gemini/Episode 10- Persona

July 31
59. Dr. Dolittle- Really aimed for kids, so don't watch it alone.
60. Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones- Sure this is some bad stuff, but so much good stuff it doesn't matter.

Re: 4th Annual Summer Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge - List Thread

Trevor's DVDTalk 2011 Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge List

Aiming for about 50 episodes/movies so maybe a count of 20 to 30; concentrating on animated comic book stuff; no checklist (rehab rule).
(edit to add: Crap, I'll start the checklist just to get the extra prize entry, but I really hope I don't finish it.)

~1 - 3 - Sam and Max: Freelance Police (1997) - Compete Series DVD Set at home - Episodes 1-24 with extra shorts and featurettes- The comic book is one of my favorite of all time, but I missed this late 90s Fox Kids animated series until fairly recently. Lots of fun, and captures the spirit of the comic very well. The LucasArts computer game of 1993 is one of the best ever, and I've heard good things about the Telltale games of last decade.

~4 - Justice League (2001) - Justice League: Justice On Trial DVD at home - 4 episodes with introductions -

~5 - Justice League Unlimited (2004) - Justice League Unlimited Joining Forces DVD at home - 3 episodes plus featurettes - Title change was for the third season.

~6 - 7 - Fantastic Four: World's Greatest Heroes (2006) - Volume One and Volume Two DVDs at home - Eight episodes. - More fun than I expected. Pretty sure I got these two DVDs free or only for exclusives, but now I'm planning to complete the series.

~8 - Ultimate Avengers (2006) - DVD with special features at home - Decent.

~9 - Ultimate Avengers II (2006) - DVD with special features at home - Forgot that I have both of these on BD. Doh!

~10 - 17 - Blade: The Series (2006) - Complete Series DVD Set at home- Watched the pilot movie three times, as there were two different commentaries. Really enjoyed the 12 episode series, as much as the films pretty much, and disappointed that it wasn't renewed.

~18 - The Batman vs Dracula: The Animated Movie (2005) - DVD at girlfriend's - Surprised at how much I enjoyed it. Have never really seen any animated Batman.

~19 - The NeverEnding Story (1984) - DVD at sister's - Charming.

~20 - Spider-Man (2002) - DVD at sister's - More violent and emotive than I remember.

~21 - 23 - The Tick (2001) - Complete Series DVD Set at home - 9 episodes. A couple episodes in, and not laughing as much as I had hoped. Loved the comic, perhaps the animated series is better. It grew on me a bit, but still not quite as good as I had expected.

~24 - The Brain That Wouldn't Die (1962) - DVD at home - A guilty pleasure. I remember watching this late one night when I was very young and not supposed to watch scary films.

~25 - 28 - X-Men (1992) - Volume 1 DVD set - 16 episodes. - Has gotten a lot of praise over the years; and aside from the horrible voice acting I enjoyed it as well.

~29 - 31 - The Batman Season One (2004) - Complete Season DVD set at home - 13 episodes. - Great show, hope my future step-daughter likes it.

~32 - The Brain That Wouldn't Die (1962/1993) - DVD at home - MST3K version.

~33 - 34 - Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker (2000) - DVD at home - First Batman Beyond exposure was a good one, I'll have to collect all the animated Batman someday. Watched again with creator commentary.

~35 - 36 - Robinson Crusoe on Mars (1964) - Criterion DVD at home - Should be more well known. Watched again with cast/crew commentary.

~37 - 38 - Robocop (1987) - Criterion DVD at home - Such a great supporting cast. Watched again with crew commentary.

~39 - Robocop 2 - DVD at home - Have I ever even watched this film before? I'm about to find out. Yes, I had. As a film, it makes a great comic book.

~40 - Robocop 3 - DVD at home -

The Batman Season Two

The Batman Season Three

Underdog

Max Fleischer's Superman

Superman: The Lost Episodes

Scooby-Doo Meets Batman

~51 - Superman Doomsday

Re: 4th Annual Summer Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge - List Thread

2011 Science Fiction/Fantasy Challenge

Blue= First-time viewing

July 1
1. Master of the World (1961). Trailer Netflix Streaming. Terrific movie. MGM released this on VHS as a Midnight Movie, but for some reason they never put it out on DVD, and now, given the lamentable state of their MOD program, likely never will.
2. Gog (1954). Trailer. Netflix Streaming. This must have been a 3-D release: the film is in color, unusual for 1950s sci-fi flicks, and the first shot is of a nurse thrusting a needle at the screen. And why do rocketships in 1950s sci-fi look like vibrators? Oh, and the plot has Richard Egan investigating killer robots on a military research station.
3. Damnation Alley (1977). Trailer. Digital file. Jan Michael Vincent! Giant scorpions! Killer cockroaches!
4. Creature With the Atom Brain Trailer. Crackle.com . More like "Flabby, Middle-aged White Guys with the Atom Brain." A gangster is using a scientist's invention to reanimate the dead and kill his enemies.
5. Metropolis Redux (1927). Trailer. Digital file. The difficulty of giving a silent classic a contemporary soundtrack is that the music will become dated, but even 27 years later the Giorgio Moroder soundtrack still sparkles, even though the print itself is severely truncated.
6. Night Slaves (1972). YouTube. Wow, another lost classic! The premise is silly-why do aliens made of pure energy need a spaceship?-but it's entertaining with a great cast. The Warner Archive should pick this up as it has other 70s TV-films.

July 2
7. Beyond the Time Barrier (1960). Trailer. Netflix Streaming.. This was directed by Edgar G. Ulmer, the director of Detour and The Black Cat, so I was expecting good things, but even though I enjoy low-budget 50s sci-fi, this movie is just dull.
8.Les Aventures Extraordinaires d'Adèle Blanc-Sec (2010). Trailer. Digital file. Why are American audiences denied good films just because they were made in other languages? I have to go to other means to watch movies from other countries because US distributors assume that their audiences are as ignorant as they are.
9. Looker (1981). Trailer. Starz. Despite a few details, this film is eerily prescient on the advent of digital manipulation of public opinion.
10. Westworld (1973). Trailer. DVD from my collection. Crichton used the same concept of amusement park technology gone horribly wrong 20 years later for Jurassic Park, substituting dinosaurs for robots.
11. Invisible Invaders. (1959). Trailer. TCM. More like Plan 9 From Outer Space than Night of the Living Dead.
12. The Cyclops. (1957). Trailer. TCM. With a bigger budget and a better script, this could have been a mini-classic.

July 3
13. Supernova (2000). Trailer. Starz. A truly awful waste of celluloid.
14. Knowing (2009). Trailer. Starz. Despite the presence of Nicolas Cage, this is still an intriguing sci-fi film.
15. The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension (1984). Trailer. DVD from my collection. I'm still waiting on the sequel. Brilliant movie.
16. The Fly. (1986). Trailer. DVD from my collection. DVD from my collection. As horrific as the 1958 original is, the Cronenberg remake is even more so.
17. The Fly II (1989). Trailer. DVD from my collection. Clearly a cheap cash-in on a successful film ,but stil terrific.
18. The Fly. (1958). Trailer. Cruder than the remake, but the climax still gives me the willies.

July 4
19. They Live (1988). Trailer. Netflix Streaming. I'm surprised that Roddy Piper didn't make a successful transition from wrestling to action films; he's good in this.
20. Independence Day (1996). Trailer. DVD from my own collection. Mandatory viewing.
21. 2012 (2009). Trailer.. Blu-Ray from my collection. Disaster porn at its finest!

July 5
22. Journey to the Center of the Earth (1959). Trailer. DVD from my collection. Before Pat Boone became a shill for the extreme right, he used to be a pleasant enough actor and singer, and he manages to get a couple of songs in this Technicolor spectacular.
23. Children of Men (2006). Trailer. I hadn't seen this since its release; I forgot how completely brilliantly conceived this film is.

July 6
24. Invasion U.S.A. (1952). Netflix DVD Trailer. Dopey Cold War paranoia flick about the Soviets nuking the US.
25. Def-Con 4 (1985). Trailer. Digital file. Another post-nuke thriller with mutant cannibals.
26. Cafe Flesh (1982). Digital file. W.T.F.? I thought porn was supposed to be hot; this is just weird. .

July 7
27. Barbarella (1968). Trailer. DVD from my collection. I absolutely love this movie!
28. Night of the Lepus (1972). Trailer. YouTube. You have to wonder which studio genius thought a movie about killer rabbits was a hot idea.

July 8
29. One Million Years B.C. (1966). Trailer. Online. Note to fundamentalists: this is not a documentary.
30. The Land That Time Forgot (1975). Trailer. MGM HD. Ah, this feeds my inner 12-year-old; great Saturday afternoon flick, even though I watched it on a Friday.
31. Frequency (2000) Trailer. DVD from my collection. I finally knocked this off my unwatched pile, years after I bought it. Great flick.
32. Futurama/ "Neutopia"/ "Benderama"/ "Ghost in the Machines"/ "Law and Oracle"-Comedy Central
33. Torchwood: Miracle Day/ "The New World". Starz--Masters of Horror/ "The Screwfly Solution"--DVD

July 9
34. Attack of the Puppet People (1958). Trailer. Netflix Streaming. . An AIP ripoff of the far superior "The Incredible Shrinking Man", this is still fun when mixed with beer and a late night.
35. Transatlantic Tunnel (1935). Netflix Streaming. The domestic drama part of the movie is dull as death, but the film's special effects still stand up today.
36. Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah (2001). DVR. It's somehow comforting that, despite Japan's technological advances and their reputation for world-class cinema, they still have their monsters played by guys in a suit.

July 10
37. The Omega Man (1971). Trailer. DVD from my collection. Ron Grainer's score is one of the most memorable in SF films It made a strong impression on my 9-year-old consciousness when my mom took us to see it at the drive-in.
38. Rock and Rule (1983). Trailer. YouTube. Fun movie that takes me back to the 80s with its look and soundtrack.
39. Men In Black (1997). Trailer. DVD. Watched with commentary on.
40. Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend (1985). Trailer. DVR. Too childish for adult tastes, and the CGI in Jurassic Park 8 years late rendered the animatronics in this flick primitive and outmoded, although William Katt's backside in wet underwear deserves some kind of award.
41. The Lawnmower Man (1992). Trailer. TV. Eighteen years ago, Hollywood thought that virtual reality would be the future of cyberspace; but it turned out to be Facebook.

July 11
42. Nightbreed. (1990). Trailer. DVD from my collection. Underrated classic--I'd love to see the Director's Cut someday.
43. The Cape Canaveral Monsters (1960). Netflix Streaming. Just godawful. From the director of the immortal Robot Monster. Was this ever MST3Ked?
44. Eureka-"Liftoff"; Warehouse 13-"The New Guy"

July 12
45. Robot Chicken Star Wars X 4 commentaries. Netflix DVD. Way better than the Family Guy Star Wars parodies.
46. The Magnetic Monster. (1953).Veoh. Not a bad film, but not very scary.
47. Return to Oz (1985). Trailer. Showtime Beyond. I can see why this bombed at the box office--what a bleak, disturbing film!
48. Justice League: The New Frontier. (2008). Trailer. DVD from my collection. Although JL:TFN is ostensibly set during the early 60s, it definitely feels like a reaction to the bigotry and paranoia ruling America in 2011.

July 13
49. The Wasp Woman (1959). Trailer. Netflix Streaming. The wasp mask looks ridiculous.
50. Forbidden Planet (1956). Trailer. DVD from my collection. The granddaddy of bid-budget, widescreen sci-fi epics.
51. The Invisible Boy. (1957). Trailer. DVD from my collection. MGM needed to reuse Robby to amortize the expense of creating him, but they should have dumped the kid and made it about the evil computer.
51. Never Let Me Go (2010). Trailer. Netflix. Unbearably depressing story about clones in love.
52. Battle Los Angeles. (2011). Trailer. Netflix. Big, loud, and dumb.

July 14.
53. The Day the Earth Caught Fire (1961). Trailer. Digital file. Frighteningly prescient film that foretold the effects of radical climate change (from nuclear weapons, not carbon dioxide) half a century ago.

July 15.
54. Predators (2010). Trailer. Cinemax. Terrible, stupid movie. Adrian Brody's workout regimen sure paid off, though.
55. Futureworld (1976). Trailer. Showtime. Lame sequel to Westworld--the movie starts with some working at a newspaper, using an analog phone and a typewriter. Not very futuristic, even if they do have lifelike androids.
56. Invaders from Mars (1986). Trailer. Showtime. Although vastly inferior to the original , this remake has a certain goofy brio that makes me like it despite myself. I may have to buy it.

July 16.
57. Where Have All the People Gone? (1974). Digital file. Another ABC Movie of the Week from the mid-70s, in which a solar flare reduces much of the Earth's population to dust. This scared the bejeezus out of me as a kid, but upon rewatching it seems dull.
58. Electric Dreams (1984). Trailer. Digital file. Painfully dated technology, but it's still a fun retro trip to the 80s and the soundtrack is terrific.
59. Freejack (1992). Trailer. Cinemax. Emilio Estevez is sent to a dystopian future in 2009. Odd, I don't recall seeing big ugly windowless cars and time-traveling fugitives on the streets 2 years ago.
60. The Abyss (1989). Trailer. DVD. Watched the extended version with the giant waves.

July 17.
61. Wild, Wild West (1999). Trailer. DVDDespite its many, many flaws, this is kinda fun on a slow day. At least Kevin Smith got a good giant mechanical spider story out of it.
62. Torchwood: Miracle Day-- "Rendition"/ True Blood--"I'm Alive and on Fire"

July 18.
63. Hot Tub Time Machine (2010). Trailer. Netflix Streaming. A lot better than I though it would be.
64. Pandorum (2009). Trailer. Netflix Streaming. Scary good fun.
65. Genesis II (1973). DVD-R. One of Gene Roddenberry's attempts to get a new sci-fi series off the ground after the cancellation of Star Trek.
66. Starship Troopers. Trailer. DVD. Eerily prophetic, this could serve as a satire of the national hysteria post-9/11.
67. Eureka--"Reprise"/ Warehouse 13--"Trials"

July 19.
68. Skyline (2010). Trailer. Netflix Streaming. Not all that bad.
69. War Gods of the Deep (1965). Trailer. DVD. Tab Hunter's career crashed quickly, going from starring roles in big-budget Hollywood films to making low-budget drive-in fare.
70. At the Earth's Core (1976). Trailer. DVD. My favorite of the ERB adaptations that AIP made in the last gasp of the drive-ins in the 70s.

July 20.
71. Embryo (1976). Trailer. Archive.org. Boy creates girl, girl turns into psycho hag, boy loses girl.
72. Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985). Trailer. DVD. Mel Gibson makes me cringe these days, but this is still an awesome action flick!
73. Chandu the Magician (1932). TCM. Somehow this film escaped me over the years--good stuff.
74. Jurassic Park: The Lost World (1997). Trailer. Cinemax. Spielberg really screwed this up.

July 21.
75. Lifeforce (1985). Trailer. DVD. Although this is adapted from a novel, it has a very Quatermass feel to it.
76. Idiocracy (2006). Trailer. iTunes. Seeing the rise of the Tea Party and the success of shows like Jersey Shore, I'm not convinced that Idiocracy is science fiction any more.
77. Fire and Ice (1983). Trailer. YouTube. Bakshi was going for Epic Fantasy, but this just seems like an overheated Saturday morning cartoon. I kept expecting to see Thundarr show up.
78. Escape from L.A. (1996). Trailer. DVD. Inferior sequel.

July 22.
79. Johnny Mnemonic (1995). Trailer. TV. Another movie set in the future that is already incredibly dated
80. Strange Invaders (1984). Trailer. DVD. This deliberately retro tribute to 50s sci-fi is itself a time capsule of 80s culture.

July 23.
81. The Lost World. (1925). Trailer. Netflix Streaming. Very good effects for its time.
82. Queen of Blood (1966). Trailer. Netflix Streaming. Ah, yes, the year 1990, when we had colonies on the moon and flights to Mars.
83. Flash Gordon (1980). Trailer. DVD. This is way more fun than it should be.
84. Queen of Outer Space (1958). Trailer. DVR. Fun, in an extremely cheesy way. Eric Fleming sure knew how to wear a jumpsuit.

July 24.
85. The Martian Chronicles (1979) Part 1 "The Expeditions". DVD. This was a 3-night miniseries based on Ray Bradbury's short story collection. It was broadcast in 2-hour segments but plays more like a collection of Twilight Zone-like stories than a coherent narrative.
86. The Martian Chronicles (1979) Part 2 "The Settlers".
87. The Martian Chronicles (1979) Part 3 "The Martians".
88. Clash of the Titans (2010). Trailer. HBO. I hate to admit it, but I liked this better than the original.
89. Torchwood: Miracle Day--"Dead of Night"/ True Blood--"I Hate You, I Love You"

July 25.
90. Between Two Worlds (1944). Trailer. DVD-RI was disappointed that WB cancelled the John Garfield boxset and dumped his films into the Archive, but at least I got to own this. Wonderful movie.
91. MST3K-Space Mutiny (1997). Video. Slab Bulkhead! Fist Rockbone!
92. La Belle et La Bete (1946). Trailer. YouTube.. Absolutely brilliant film--I may pick this up before the Criterion sale ends.
93. Eureka--"Glimpse" / Warehouse 13--"Love Sick"

July 26.
94. Bride of the Monster (1955). YouTube. The redeeming part of watching this dreck is identifying the scenes recreated in Ed Wood
95. The Amazing Transparent Man (1960). Trailer. Hulu. Another Z-grade drive-in flick from the once-great Edgar G. Ulmer--what on earth ruined his career?
96. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009) Trailer. Cable. I've been ambivalent about the Harry Potter movies as being good, but aimed at kids, not adults, but I think I may be coming around
97. Avatar. (2009).Trailer. Cable. Like most of Cameron's films, great look, thin story.

July 27.
98. The Sorcerer's Apprentice (2010). Trailer. Cinemax Nicholas Cage desperately needs someone to give him career advice, although this movie isn't all that bad.
99. Americathon (1979). DVD. A weak, vacillating president governs a bankrupt nation, with China as an ascendant capitalist power and Vietnam as a vacation spot. Those crazy screen writers, what will they think of next?
100. It Came From Outer Space (1953). Trailer. DVD. The Professor is an alien!
101. Conquest of Space (1955). Trailer. YouTube. The Brooklyn guy was Laverne's dad in "Laverne and Shirley".

July 28.
102. Phantom from Space (1953). Trailer. Netflix Streaming Painfully slow and boring, but at least there's a naked guy at the end.
103. Terminator 2 (1991). Trailer. DVD. Hard to believe this came out 20 years ago. Still awesome.

July 29.
104. The Last Wave (1979). Trailer. Shotime Beyond. One of the eeriest films I've ever seen. If Criterion cleans up the print and puts it out on Blu, I'll get it.
105. The Last Starfighter (1984). Trailer. Cinemax. Pure 80s cheese, in the best possible way.
106. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2. (2011). Trailer. Theater. Wow, just an amazing end to the series. Definite Best Picture nomination, for sure.
107. Blade Runner (1982). Trailer. HD-DVD. I'm not a Sean Young fan, but she looks so amazing in this. Classic film.

July 30.
108. The Swarm (1978). Trailer. Netflix Streaming. Irwin Allen should have quit after The Towering Inferno. The Swarm doesn't even work as camp.
109. Futurama--"Yo Leela Leela"/ "All the Presidents' Heads"/ Torchwood: Miracle Day--"Escape to L.A."

July 31
109. True Blood--"I Wish I was the Moon"/ The Outer Limits--"Cry of Silence"
110. The Monolith Monsters (1957). Trailer. DVD. I wanted to get in one more classic.
110. Immortal (2005). Trailer. DVD. Bought this on a whim at Best Buy for $5 and decided to watch it to close out the month. The combo of animation and live action looks odd and dated compared to newer works like Avatar.

Re: 4th Annual Summer Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge - List Thread

Goal: 50
Legend:
First Time Views *
Watched With Wife *
- July 1st -
1.)
Metropolis (1927 / 1984) (DVD)
My Thoughts: I remember seeing the Giorgio Moroder version of Metropolis in high school and falling in love with it. Over the years since then I have looked for it off and on and been unsuccessful in finding it until just this last year. This blend of a 20's German dystopian future with the sounds and colors of the 80's works brilliantly. It is a feast for the eyes and I will enjoy watching that 20's robot exotic dancing over and over again in the years to come.
(4.5 out of 5)
2.)
Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe: Chapters 1-5 (1940) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: I wanted to like this but I found myself bored to tears. Admittedly probably fresh in it's day it just played hackneyed and the same ass the dozen or so other serials I have seen. The only thing that partially saved this for me was having some characters I knew and being somewhat interesting in an past view of the future sort of way. I am at the moment on the fence on if I should watch the next 5ish hours or so on this box set...
(2 out of 5)
3.)
Flash Gordon (1980) (Blu-Ray) *
My Thoughts: I gotta say, the experience of watching this on Blu-Ray kinda ruined this for me. I was a big fan of this movie both in cheese and ascetics on VHS but everything is just too clear on Blu-Ray. It makes it seem like a Dr. Who episode. The sets feel like sets now and the miniatures look like miniatures. But the acting, soundtrack and final act do still save it from being a disaster.
(3 out of 5)
My Wife's Thoughts: "Flash.....Ahhhhh. I think DVD version is much better, 3D version is too fake, too clean. Looks like 60's TV show. It's ok kiddie movie like 3 star I guess. I know why you want to play football, like Flash. Maybe next time we should think wither or not to buy Blu-Ray."
(3 out of 5)
- July 2nd -
4.) - 5.)
Sliders S04E19-22 (1999) (DVD)
My Thoughts: The gang slides from world to world getting themselves into trouble Westly Crusher style. Although I don't hate the Sliders like I do the intrepid ensign Crusher. Kari is exceptionally cute, especially when she gets off character. But after taking the studio tour at Universal all I can see is backlot when I watch this show now. The season finale even starts at the Bates Motel! No cliffhanger this time but it still stings that I can't get season 5 on DVD.
(3.5 out of 5)
6.)
Tremors: The Series S01E01-02 (2003) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: As a fan of the Tremors franchise I was pleased when they turned it into a tv show but unfortunately was never able to catch it when it was actually on. It's nice to see all the returning cast members but I am already seeing how this might be hard, plot wise, to maintain as a show. The second episode is easily the best of the pair harkening back to Tremors 2. Nothing amazing so far but still looking forward to the rest of this series.
(3.5 out of 5)
- July 3rd -
7.)
Fringe S02E16-17 (2010) (Internet) *
My Thoughts: I discovered this series via DVDTalk word of mouth and it has been quite a pleasure and it's nice to know that this one won't die so quickly like FlashForward or The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Here we have a somewhat disappointing story-arc episode and a fantastic stand alone guest staring Petter Weller in a repeated day episode. Finding things like this makes all the hours wasted on DVDTalk worth it.
(3 & 4.5 out of 5 respectively)
- July 4th -
8.) - 9.)
Tremors: The Series S01E03-06 (2003) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: One Tremors 3 callback episode and 3 lamer expanding on Perfection episodes. Had I been watching this one on the initial run this is about the part where I probably would have seen the writing on the wall. I love Christopher Lloyd but his as a scientist from and old abandoned military research center hidden in Perfection valley is kinda lame.
(3 out of 5)
- July 5th -
10.)
Fringe S02E18-19 (2010) (Internet) *
My Thoughts: A decent overarching plot episode and a great standalone holodeck/what if episode. Generally with Sci-Fi the plot arc episodes are my favorite but with both Fringe and the X-Files the weird what ifs seem to be the cream. Going back and forth from this to the budget challenged Tremors Series is like night and day in quality.
(4 out of 5)
- July 6th -
11.)
Fringe S02E20-21 (2010) (Internet) *
My Thoughts: Another great stand alone episode with the annoying girl from the Goonies, not so annoying this time. And a penultimate season 2 episode that rocked my socks off. There was a point where I was kinda meh who are this new characters they are introducing, I am not sure if I am going to like where this is going but then they kill them, awesome. I can't wait to see the season finally but I am really tired so it will have to wait till the morrow.
(4.5 out of 5)
- July 7th -
12.)
Tremors: The Series S01E07-08 (2003) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: A couple of pretty good episodes, not surprisingly none of that expanded universe crap. The shoestring budget that sci-fi had the show on really starts to show when they attempt these big action sequences, but the characters are into it and it's at least as fun as Tremors 3 or maybe even a bit better...
(3.5 out of 5)
- July 8th -
13.)
Fringe S02E22-S03E01 (2010) (Internet) *
My Thoughts: Wow, a great Lost, 'I have to see what is next' vibe going on. This is TV done right. When every episode makes me crazy to see the next something is working. Also this set up into season 3 is very interesting and I am curious how they are going to develop that. Watch this show!
(5 out of 5)
14.)
Tremors: The Series S01E09-10 (2003) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: I wasn't too impressed with the last episodes, it feels like a lameish 90's show at this point. There is one episode with an awful CG monster and another one where animal rights activist descend on Perfection to protect El Blanco, and they are both about as lame as they sound.
(2 out of 5)
- July 10th -
15.)
Killer Klowns From Outer Space (1988) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: Didn't quite hold up as well as I remember but it is still one of the go to 80's cult experiences. If you are in the mood for some bad acting, horrible plot and the need for a gread deal of suspension of disbelief you will not be disappointed. Also for use while drinking and or to terrify those weirdos that are afraid of clowns.
(3.5 out of 5)
My Wife's Thoughts: "Expected high, beginning but it was not that great 3.5 drop to 2.5. It was too silly and kiddie and no any secret. They no talk about anything, where they come from anything. The look very creepy." Her Favorite Klown Kill: Shadow Puppets
(2.5 out of 5)
- July 11th -
16.) - 16.5)
Fringe S03E02-04 (2010) (Internet) *
My Thoughts: Not the explosiveness of either the previous seasons finally or this seasons opener but still serviceable episodes. A bit color by numbers compared to the rest of the series thus far but compared to other shows it is still pretty awesome. I need more, and am dreading catching up to the end of season 3 and having to wait for season 4.
(3.5 out of 5)
- July 13th -
17.5)
Thor (2011) (Theater) **
My Thoughts: I was never really into the character of Thor so it's not all that surprising that the movie didn't really do it for me. The stuff in Valhalla was cool, Natalie Portman was cute if playing a bit of a generic character but I just couldn't get into it. I wasn't really feeling the actor, although compared to the TV movie with Bill Bixby it was an improvement and all the parts set on Earth seemed lacking somehow like they were all tiny sets or something. Basically "Meh" but with some pretty.
(3 out of 5)
My Wife's Thoughts: "I don't care about it, I'm so tired. I don't like it, disappointed, glad to watch the dollar movie ($3.75 each for 3-D) I don't pay full price for that. Too kiddie, I expected a little more and of course tired but still."
(2.0 out of 5)
- July 14th -
18.) - 19.)
Tremors: The Series S01E11-13 (2003) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: 2 decent creature features and one of the worst season finales I have ever seen round out this series in a disappointing swan song. I can see why Sci-Fi did shuffle this one around. Everyones favorite characters was basically a no show on these last 3 episodes (my favorite is the little asian shopkeep though). And the finale was so so disappointing, a continuation of my other least favorite episode in the series consisting of the mob going after El Blanco, sigh. I am still slightly optimistic about Tremors 5, if they can ever get it off the ground and bring some names back.
(3 out of 5)
- July 15th -
20.) - 21.)
Fringe S03E05-08 (2011) (Internet) *
My Thoughts: The parallel worlds Olivia jumping comes to an exciting head. I am feeling a but redundant with my constant gushing over this series but it is indeed great. I wonder if the sitcom like sci-fi shows are dead. The Incredible Hulks or Star Treks in favor of this over story arc. It does have diminishing returns in that once someone misses a few episodes they are very lost but they are so so much more satisfying.
(4 out of 5)
- July 16th -
22.)
Timecrimes (2007) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: One of the best time travel movies I have seen in awhile. Reminds me of Primer but with no annoying characters. So far this is my pick of the challenge, just a completely satisfying blind buy, something that seems to have gotten more illusive over the years.
(4.5 out of 5)
- July 17th -
23.)
Sherlock Holmes (2010) (Blu-Ray) **
My Thoughts: Robert Downey Jr. was great as he has been in everything for the past half decade or so. The movie it's self was also fun but as a Sherlock Holmes movie it didn't quite ring true to me. For departures on the Holmes formula I quite like Michael Cain's Without A Clue much better. Don't get me wrong I had a great time with this it just didn't feel like Sherlock Homes.
(4 out of 5)
My Wife's Thoughts: "I expected something else. Jude Law is good but Robert Dountry Jr, he think everything the same, Iron Man. He is not great actor he cannot change the rolls. It's exactly same, I don't care about that. Didn't know that that was a guy Richie Film, interesting.
(3.5 out of 5)
- July 18th -
24.)
Fringe S03E09-10 (2011) (Internet) *
My Thoughts: Still a couple of good episodes but I really thought Fringe was above the cliched have to keep the couple apart to keep thins interesting paradigm. I really hope they don't run this into the ground Rachel and Ross style. This was even a problem with Lost but here they do try a similar triangle thing to try and keep it fresh but still. I shouldn't be thinking about plot structure, I should just be enjoying the show!
(3.5 out of 5)
- July 19th -
25.)
Fringe S03E11-12 (2011) (Internet) *
My Thoughts: 2 basically throw away episodes. Still fun as they are set in the Fringe-verse but like lost I sometimes find myself inpatient with episodes that aren't more plot heavy. I have fallen a bit behind in my reviews at this point (currently the 28th) and looking back they don't seems like great episodes but as I remember when I was watching them I was enthralled just like every other episode of Fringe.
(3.5 out of 5)
- July 21st -
26.)
Fantastic Argoman (1967) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: The primes is basically Bond if he were a telekinetic Japanese superhero that everyone thought was a super villain. This is easily going to be my WTF Did I Just Watch pick of the challenge. Aside from the ridiculous costume, the muscle free super hero, the Godzilla movie dubbing... well not that I think about it it is almost like a bad episode of the 60's Batman tv series, a really bad episode. Also the VHS quality transfer on this Kick Ass Heroes set didn't help either.
(2 out of 5)
- July 22nd -
27.)
Jumper (2008) (Blu-Ray)
My Thoughts: I was actually under the impression that I had only seen just bits and pieces of this before but nope, seen it all. Not sure what kind of recommendation that warrants but I did have fun with this one. A friend once described this to me as Nightcrawler the movie, and he wasn't too far off base. Hayden Christiansen does get annoying from time to time and I do end up liking the second string characters much more than him but it's gorgeous to look at and fun in a Transformers sort of way and probably one I will end up revisiting in the future.
(3.5 out of 5)

Commentary
28.)
Commentary For Jumper (2008) (Blu-Ray)
My Thoughts: I usually prefer cast commentaries as I feel that over the past 10 years or so I have gotten my fill of the creative, film making aspect. This one was different though, it was heavy on adaptation from the graphic novel/comic book and on the creative aspects of flushish out the universe. Also I always enjoy hearing about planned sequels that will never come to fruition. If you didn't hate the source I would definably recommend checking this one out.
(3.5 out of 5)
- July 23rd -
29.)
Elektra (2005) (DVD) **
My Thoughts: I missed this one the first time around and now after actually having seen it, I guess I didn't miss much. Elektra is not a character I really care about and Jennifer Gardener isn't really an actress I particularly like. SHe was fine in Daredevil and in fact the first 15 minutes of this movie were surprisingly awesome. But then they do this hackneyed assassin that grows a heart bit with some lameish villains, it just doesn't work for me. Too far removed to be enjoyable Marvel faire, also I think this was the last live action Marvel film not to have a post credits scene (which is odd considering Daredevil did).
(2.5 out of 5)
My Wife's Thoughts: "Pretty good, I can give 3.5 star. But need more story wise. Not sure why they attack. Jennifer Garner did pretty good job but story wise need ma little more detail, just fighting fighting finish. Not bad...

Labyrinth (1986) (Blu-Ray) *
My Thoughts: One of my absolute favorites, not only of the 80's but of all time. But this viewing was 2 firsts for me: the first time I have seen Labyrinth in widescreen and the first time I have seen it other than on VHS. The first thing that popped out to me was the level of detail, it was simply amazing. But on the flip side of that coin some of the effects do kinda fall apart in the higher resolution. All of that aside, this is one of the classics of my childhood.
(5 out of 5)
My Wife's Thoughts: Pretty good, but sometimes doesn't have to be Blu-Ray. I guess it's too clear and a littl weird. Jennifer Connolly cute. David Bowie wear strange costume. Ending was cute. Thats a good movie. Why you like girl movie so much?

Commentary For Labyrinth (1986) (Blu-Ray) *
My Thoughts: A bit of a ho hum commentary, only interesting in that they are talking about Labyrinth. I loved hearing the stories about a young Jennifer Connelly and David Bowie but it was sort of bitter sweet in that I would much rather be hearing their reminisces. A commentary with Connelly, Bowie and Hoggle would be amazing... Still this one is saved by it's content.

My Thoughts: I must admit to having lowered expectation while going into this one, which might have explained why I was so thoroughly blown away. Chris Evans is Captain America way more than he ever was Johnny Storm. This is easily the best Marvel movie I have seen since Iron Man and I think the best 2011 release I have seen thus far.
(4.5 out of 5)
My Wife's Thoughts: Chris Evans cute. He's better here, that cheerleader thing... I was wondering, did US do that really? I thought he's go date, sad. I'm excited to see sequel. I should throw something to that noisy kid! Not movie related, there was a little monster in our theater.

Fringe S03E13-16 (2011) (Internet) *
My Thoughts: OK, so they are getting over that 'my feelings are hurt' stuff and getting back to some classic Fringe. Another flash back episode blew my socks off (they need more of these). And some explosive news with Faulivia. And to think I would have never watched this show if someone on the forum hadn't discounted my opinion with it somewhere...
(4.5 out of 5)
35.)
Princess Mononoke (1997) (DVD) **
My Thoughts: I went into this one with high expectations, mostly due to the ubiquitous "Star Wars of anime" quote. Also maybe I was expecting more Sci-Fi than Fantasy, I don't mean to say I was disappointed but I really just wasn't in an fantasy mood. That being said this is an above average movie, it does get a bit to hippy naturey for me but I liked it. It actually made me move Ponya to the "to buy" list.
(3.5 out of 5)
My Wife's Thoughts: So good, so good. 5 fucking 5 star man, Miasaki is awesome. Miasaki is the best animation director ever. Then she insinuated Avatar was based on this movie. I like Yakuru. Story very good, kids and adults can enjoy this movie, I watch 5 times already, own VHS tape. All characters looks good, especially that Kudama too.

Iron Man (2008) (Blu-Ray)
My Thoughts: One of if not the best Marvel movies ever. Until this movie Iron Man had always just been an auxiliary character for me but Robert Downy Jr. makes him larger than life. This one easily overshadows all of the other Avengers movies even the near flawless Captain America that just came out. Makes me wonder how balanced the upcoming en-sable piece will be... On a side note I would love to see a more opulent R-Rated version of this property. Watchmen was good, come on Marvel get with it, the majority of your fans are over 18.

Iron Man 2 (2010) (Blu-Ray)
My Thoughts: Whiplash and his drones seemed a bit redundant/less interesting than I would have preferred. But Robert Downy Jr. continues to bring the awesome and the constant Avengers teases still made it one of the better film experiences of 2010. I would enjoy seeing Iron Man go up against a non-mechanical enemy.

38.)
Fringe S03E17-18 (2011) (Internet) *
My Thoughts: A bit annoying that they have another reason to keep Olivia and peter apart but at least this time it is done in a very interesting way. In fact I could see keeping this dynamic and bringing Faulivia back over.
(4 out of 5)
39.)
Watchmen: The Director's Cut (2009) (Blu-Ray) *
My Thoughts: This is my top movie of 2009. And can best be described in one word: Epic. Note: I have not read the source material but I do have the motion comic in the "to watch' pile.
(5 out of 5)
My Wife's Thoughts: I don't like Comedian guy he is too violent and gross. I like that battleship and peepee. But too long and had to confusing. If you read Marvel understand it better. I know, I told her[/b]

Commentary For Watchmen: The Director's Cut (2009) (Blu-Ray) *
My Thoughts: Ok, so Maximum Movie Mode is not exactly commentary but I am counting it as such for the challenge. This reminds me a bit of those old infinifilm DVDs in that you need to click the remote from time to time to see some of the special features. I would have preferred it just auto-play everything and that there was less down time between segments, even some pop-up video style trivia would have been nice. But I must admit this allowed me to enjoy several additional segments that I might not have watched otherwise and the segments with the director were excellent.
(4 out of 5)
41.)
Tron (1982) (Blu-Ray) *
My Thoughts: I never really thought that Tron was that great of a movie, it's more like a fireworks display with a plot shoehorned in. That being said it is a fun fireworks display. The visuals seem even more interesting now than they used to, its a retro feast for the eyes.
(3.5 out of 5)
My Wife's Thoughts: This is little cheesy, like too much video game behind. Is this 80's? 1982 Thats why. I'm excited to see Tron Legacy, looks better. I guess we watch good tv thats why looks cheesy I guess...

Friday The 13th: The Series S01E01-04 (1987) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: A lot cheesier than I remembered but this show did run when I was 3. It is actually really weird when you think about it. You have these cousins and their weird sexual tension and they have set out on a quest to basically steal back things they and their uncle have sold. And then there is the whole name of the show controversy. But its entertaining enough and subject matter makes it bit better.

Re: 4th Annual Summer Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge - List Thread

Goals:
Have 90% of entries be first viewings for me or at the very least for my wife
50 entries
Find out what this Doctor Who craze is all about
July 1st1. Predators (2010) | First Time Viewing | Blu-Ray
I honestly had my doubts about this film. Adrian Brody and Topher Grace? Not exactly two men I consider to live up to the extremely macho cast of the first Predator movie. Brody actually proves himself well, even if he does take to many cues from the Dark Knight. Putting Predator back in the jungle was a good move and this film certainly delivers much in the spirit of the Schwarzenegger classic. Action packed and entertaining throughout.
RATING: 7/10
2. Predator 2 (1990) | First Time Viewing | Blu-Ray
Boring, even at 108 minutes it could have stood for a little more trimming and needs some pacing issues addressed. Predator 2 just didn't work for me. Maybe it was because I watched it back to back with Predators but this just seemed pale in comparison.
RATING: 5/10
3. Doctor Who (2005) | First Time Viewing | Netflix streaming
Season 1 Episode 1 and Season 1 Episode 2
4. Doctor Who (2005) | First Time Viewing | Netflix streaming
Season 1 Episode 3 and Season 1 Episode 4
July 2nd
5. Thor (2011) | Theater
I thought this movie was going to be a turd, miraculously enough it works. While the cheese level is high it's just a hell of a lot of fun, the switching between Earth and Asgard never feels disorientating and both worlds work well. The cast all plays there parts well and Chris Hemsworth plays the part of Thor excellently. An all around fun comic book flick that shouldn't be missed.
RATING: 7.5/10
6. Doctor Who (2005) | First Time Viewing | Netflix streaming
Season 1 Episode 5 and Season 1 Episode 6
7. Doctor Who (2005) | First Time Viewing | Netflix streaming
Season 1 Episode 7 and Season 1 Episode 8
8. Doctor Who (2005) | First Time Viewing | Netflix streaming
Season 1 episode 9 and Season 1 Episode 10
July 3rd
9. 3rd Rock From The Sun (2000) | First Time Viewing | Netflix Streaming
Season 6 Episodes 1, 2, 3, and 4
10. Hunter Prey (2010) | First Time Viewing | Netflix Streaming in HD
Okay, so judging by the Boba Fett knockoff on the cover I was expecting something silly and action filled, something I could just turn my mind off and watch for an hour and half. What I got was a slow burning, intelligent sci-fi tale much in the vein of 70's era science fiction. To put it bluntly this is about the best Sci-fi film I've seen in years. An absolute surprise filled with plenty of sci-fi references and made by someone that clearly loves the genre. If you have Netflix there is absolutely no reason not to check this out.
RATING: 9/10
11. Doctor Who (2005) | First Time Viewing | Netflix streaming
Season 1 Episodes 11 and 12
12. Doctor Who (2005) | First Time Viewing | Netflix streaming
Season 1 Episode 13 and Season 2 Episode 1
End of Season wrapup: Well Season one has come and gone quite quickly in the first few days of the challenge. Needless to say I got hooked hard on this show, Eccleston was absolutely fantastic as the doctor and I'm going to miss the hell out of him next season.
RATING: 8.5/10
July 4th
13. Enemy Mine (1985) | First Time Viewing | DVD
Enemy Mine is about two enemies that were taught to hate each other, they crash land their ships on an unknown planet after a dogfight between the Humans and the Drax. What unfolds is a kind of brotherhood between the two species as they are forced to work together. It all feels genuine and get's pretty heartfelt which isn't something seen to often in sci-ti tales. This relationship works pretty well until the third act. The cheese just get's spread on to hard towards the end and I really just wasn't into the last 1/3 as I was everything prior.
RATING: 7/10
14. Futurama (1999) | Netflix Streaming
Volume 3 Episodes 1,2,3 and 4
15. Doctor Who (2006) | First Time Viewing | Netflix streaming
Season 2 Episode 2 and 3
16. Doctor Who (2006) | First Time Viewing | Netflix streaming
Season 2 Episodes 4 and 5
17. Doctor Who (2006) | First Time Viewing | Netflix streaming
Season 2 Episodes 6 and 7
July 5th
18. Splice (2009) | First Time Viewing | Blu-Ray
Bravo marketing department, I had no idea I was about to watch what I just watched.
RATING: WTF/10
19. All-Star Superman (2011) | First Time Viewing | Blu-Ray
I've honestly never been much a fan of The Man of Steel. There's just something unappealing about the strongest man in the galaxy. A super hero that's just to powerful isn't interesting. Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely changed all that when they created what is one of my favorite comics ever. This movie is a near perfect representation of the comic series, that being said if you haven't read it not much will make sense. The animated movie could have benefited from added length to really flesh out what was happening. It made sense to me, but that's because I've read the comics. To someone unfamiliar I have a feeling it would seem very jumpy and confusing, maybe even boring. That complaint aside, everything else is fantastic. The animation is spot on, the voice acting is wonderful, and the emotional impact of the story is perfect. Never has the man of steel been as good as he is in All-Star Superman.
RATING 8.5/10
20. Doctor Who (2006) | First Time Viewing | Netflix streaming
Season 2 Episodes 8 and 9
21. Doctor Who (2006) | First Time Viewing | Netflix streaming
Season 2 Episodes 10 and 11

Re: 4th Annual Summer Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge - List Thread

2011 Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge

☼ = First Time Viewing

DVD | Blu-ray | HD DVD | Theater | TV/DVR

Goals:
40 Entries
Back to the Future Trilogy
Firefly and Serenity
Planet of the Apes: The Legacy Collection
A Clockwork Orange

July 1
01. The Jacket (2005)☼ Very good film that, with a couple of improvements, could have been great. Still, I loved the premise and throughly enjoyed it. 7/10
02. The Nines (2007)☼ A little out there, but interesting enough to keep me watching. 6/10
03. Slipstream (2007)☼ WTF was that? I'm normally an Anthony Hopkins fan, but this one was just a bunch of random images flashing on the screen. 3/10

July 2
04. Deja Vu (2006) Pretty good time travel movie starring Denzel Washington. I seem to always enjoy his films even of they are a little cookie cutter. 7/10

July 3
05. The Astronaut's Wife (1999)☼ Good movie for the first hour; however, the final act just doesn't deliver. Good job of building suspense and had me wondering where it was going, only to be disappointed in the end. 5/10
06. Green Lantern (2011) I understand all the hate for this film. While I didn't hate it, I'm glad I used movie cash for the ticket and didn't actually use cash to get in. 5/10
07. Frequency (2000)☼ Very good time travel movie which seems to get little to no love. Unique storyline about time travel and the consequences of changing events to alter the future. 8/10

July 4
08. Solaris (2002)☼ Actually, more of a romance/love story set in space than a science fiction film, but I loved it anyway. Achieves what any good movie sets out to do: makes you think. 8/10
09. Replicant (2001) Typical Jean-Claude Van Damme action packed movie with JCVD playing dual roles as the antagonist and his protagonist clone. Some interesting scenes with him fighting himself. 6/10
10. Altered States (1980)☼ Starts out a little slow, but picks up tremendously in the final act. You will probably enjoy this movie a little more if you are under the influence some illegal substance. 5/10
11. The Road (2009) Excellent!!! Very sad but good post-apocalyptic story of a father and son doing whatever it takes to survive. Great performance from Viggo Mortensen. 8/10

July 5
12. It Came from Beneath the Sea (1955) Cheesy science fiction at its best. I love it!!! 6/10
13. Angel-A (2005)☼ Pretty good and unique film written and directed by Luc Besson. Definitely different than anything else I've ever seen from him. Worth a watch. 7/10

July 6
14. Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983) Not bad at all. I really enjoyed three of the four segments. Reminds me that I need to start picking up the TV show. 6/10

July 7
15. Ultraviolet (2006) Just as bad as its reputation, maybe even a little worse. Quite possibly, some of the worst dialogue in movie history! 3/10

July 8
16. Pulse (1988)☼ Not very good story about electrical pulses entering homes via wiring and causing applicances to act up and drive the homeowners crazy. 3/10

July 9
17. The Last Man on Earth (1964)☼ Pretty good. I was familiar with the story having already seen I Am Legend and The Omega Man, but it was nice to see the movie that started it all. 6/10

July 10
18. The Corpse Vanishes (1942)☼ Decent movie starring Bela Lugosi as a mad scientist who kidnaps brides at their wedding, extracts fluid from them and injects it into his wife to keep her young looking. 5/10
19. Firefly (2002):
- 19a. Serenity - Part 1
- 19b. Serenity - Part 2

July 11
20. Firefly (2002):
- 20a. The Train Job
- 20b. Bushwhacked
21. Firefly (2002):
- 21a. Shindig
- 21b. Safe

July 12
22. Firefly (2002):
- 22a. Our Mrs. Reynolds
- 22b. Jaynestown
23. Firefly (2002):
- 23a. Out of Gas
- 23b. Ariel

July 13
24. Firefly (2002):
- 24a. War Stories
- 24b. Trash

July 14
25. Firefly (2002):
- 25a. The Message
- 25b. Heart of Gold

July 15
26. Serenity (2005) Started out a little slow, but once it kicked in, I loved it. A good follow-up to Firefly. 7/10

July 16
27. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009) Good action, although edited in a way that sometimes made it hard to follow what was happening. Not a horrible plot, but some absolutely cringe inducing dialogue. Overall, better than I expected, but still not very good. 4/10

July 17
28. Planet of the Apes (1968) A true classic. I had seen this once before, but was too young to understand the social commentary it was making. It really hit home this time. 8/10
29. Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970)☼ A worthy follow-up. Takes a turn for the worse towards the end, but still entertaining. 6/10
30. Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011) Much better than Revenge of the Fallen. Better editing in the action sequences and better dialogue. Much better storyline as well. 6/10

July 18
31. Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971)☼ Cornelius and Zira travel back in time and visit current day Los Angeles. A couple of inconsistencies and unanswered questions prevent this from being as good as the previous sequel, but I still enjoyed it. 5/10
32. Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972)☼ Picks up twenty years after Escape and tells the ape revolution begins. I liked it a littel better than Escape. 6/10

July 19
33. Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973)☼ Ten years after Conquest, many of the problems that plague humans begin showing up in the ape civilization. About on par with the previous sequals. 6/10

July 20
34. Planet of the Apes (2001) I actually liked this until the end. Directors who do remakes seem to think they have to put their own stamp on the film and it's usually not necessary. That's why it's so difficult to remake a classic. Probably better left undone. 5/10

July 21
35. The Incredible Petrified World (1957)☼ Not very good, but I watched it because it was short and fit the time block I had available and it filled a couple of slots on the checklist. 3/10

July 22
36. Falling Skies (2011):
- 36a. Live and Learn
- 36b. The Armory
37. Gamer (2009) Some pretty good action, but the storyline just wasn't there. Nothing to make me care about any of the characters. 4/10

July 23
38. Falling Skies (2011):
- 38a. Prisoner of War
- 38b. Grace
39. King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962)☼ Loved it!!! This is the kind of bad science fiction I remember watching as I was growing up. The budget for miniature plastic tanks must have been huge! 6/10
40. The Fountain (2006) WOW, this is what movie making is all about!!! My favorite film so far this month and my new favorite Aronofsky. One of those movies that as soon as I watched it, I wanted to turn around and watch it again. Loved it!!! 9/10
41. A Clockwork Orange (1971) Another classic that I managed to miss all these years. Started out a little strange, but as soon as I figured out what was happening, I loved it. Not at all what I was expecting, actually better than I expected. 8/10

July 24
42. Falling Skies (2011):
- 42a. Silent Kill
- 42b. Sanctuary Pt. 1
43. Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) Very good!!! One of the better movies I've seen this summer in an overall disappointing year. I'm not familiar with the comic, so I have no idea how faithful it is; I just know I was entertained. 7/10
44. Back to the Future (1985) A classic that I hadn't seen in years, but it holds up well. One of the better blu-ray presentations I've seen as well. 8/10
45. Back to the Future Part II (1989) Not a bad sequel, but it lacks the charm and personality of the original. 7/10

July 25
46. Back to the Future Part III (1990) I think I liked it just a little better than part II, but very similar in style and feel. Not bad at all, but still a step down from the original classic. 7/10
47. Falling Skies (2011):
- 47a. Sanctuary Pt. 2
--- Firefly (2002):
- 47b. Objects in Space

July 26
48. The Arrival (1996) Actually, better than I anticipated. I have a little bit of a problem accepting Charlie Sheen as a serious actor, much less an astronomer, but other than that, it was a decent film. 6/10

July 27
49. Big Trouble in Little China (1986) Good, but didn't live up to the hype. Maybe I expected a little too much from it and I'm usually a huge John Carpenter fan. 6/10

July 28
50. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1920)☼ Interesting silent film. I think I liked it, but something seemed to be missing and I'm not quite sure what is was. 5/10

July 29
51. Babylon A.D. (2008) Better than I expected. I don't think Vin Diesel is ever going to win any awards because of his acting, but this was full of action and the storyline wasn't all that bad. Sure, there are tons of plot holes, but I was still entertained. 6/10

July 30
52. Cowboys & Aliens (2011) Good, but could and should have been much better. Daniel Craig was excellent, but something was missing and I really can't put my finger on what it was. 6/10
53. The Vampire Bat (1933)☼ Decent murder mystery involving a serial killer who drains the blood from his victims. 5/10

July 31
54. Moon (2009) An instant classic!!! Sam Rockwell deserved an Ocsar nomination for his role(s). Loved it! 8/10
