Summer Sci-Fi Challenge - List Thread

The Goal is 100

This thread is for listing, not for talking. Talking goes here http://forum.dvdtalk.com/showthread.php?t=532710

Challenge Starts July 1st at 12am EST

Challenge ends August 1st at 12 am EST

Rules

Movies/TV shows have to be labeled sci-fi from either imdb.com or allmovie.com. Other labels don't matter as long as there is at least a sci-fi label from one of those sites. Fantasy/Sci-fi would be fine.

As with the other challenges, the lists must be numbered or it won't count.

Movies count as 1 entry each.

TV shows count according to length as they are aired on TV(including commercials):
  • 30 minute shows count as 1/4 an entry
  • 1 hour shows count as 1/2 an entry
  • 2 hour shows count as 1 entry
So you need 4, 30 minute shows for 1 entry or 2 60 minute shows or any combination that gets you to 1 entry. While X-Files has a runtime of around 43 minutes, on-air it's an hour show.

If it's short films that are 10 minutes or less, once you hit 23 minutes of watching them, you've reached one 30 minute show. This is based on the theory that the run time for a 30 minute show is between 22-24 minutes.

For mini series, do count each "day" that it aired (assuming that each day was a 2 hour block). For example, Dune: The Mini Series, would it be:

63. Dune: The Mini Series - Part I
64. Dune: The Mini Series - Part II
65. Dune: The Mini Seriies - Part III

When listing TV shows, keep them together for one entry.
Example:
65. Outer Limits:episode name / Futurama: episode name / Futurama: episode name
How do I list TV shows and other short stuff if I don't have enough for an entry?

At the bottom of your post/list, keep a Temp TV section. Add stuff there until you get enough for an entry.

Watching the movie with the commentary will count as an entry.

Watching multiple versions(theatrical and director's cut) of the same movie will also count.

Show what days you watched whatever it was you watched

Example
July 1:
1. alien
2. aliens

July 2:
3. aliens 3
NUMBER YOUR LISTS OR YOU WON'T HAVE A CHANCE TO WIN FABULOUS CASH AND PRIZES

The List Thread will be posted when the challenge begins.

Prizes of varying quality will be given to the top 3 people.

1. Stargate SG-1: Season 3 - Fair Game / Stargate SG-1: Season 3 - Legacy - [DVD]
Fair Game: Our first introduction to 3 new Goa'ulds. I always love the episodes with Thor. You just feel so much anticipation that something cool is going to happen when they are around.
Legacy: I didn't really remember this one. A nice throwback to Ma'Chello. Michael Shanks was amazing in this episode.

2. Stargate SG-1: Season 3 - Learning Curve / Stargate SG-1: Season 3 - Point of View - [DVD]
Learning Curve: Decent episode. I think the SGC could have learned a lot more from these people.
Point of View: Love the quantum mirror. They could have had a whole other series that would just explore the alternate universes just like the Stargate.

3. Stargate SG-1: Season 3 - Deadman Switch / Stargate SG-1: Season 3 - Demons - [DVD]
Deadman Switch: Aris Boch is probably one of my favorite one-time characters in Stargate SG-1. He and Hathor were characters that only appeared a few times, but had very memorable performances. I can't remember if Aris Boch ever returned or not, they could have really don't some interesting stuff with his character.
Demons: Just an ok episode. I found it a little implausible that they killed the Unas so quickly. In the previous episode with an Unas, they only way they killed it was with Thor's Hammer.

4. Stargate (w/commentary)* - [DVD]
A fairly informative commentary. They were good about pointing out what was changed, and why, on the director's cut. They only mentioned Stargate SG-1 a couple of times. I would be interested to know what they thought of it as show. One of the funnier comments was when they were talking about how they wanted to do a sequel to Stargate, and one of the characters that they wanted to use in the sequel was killed off on the pilot episode of SG-1.

5. Stargate SG-1: Season 3 - Rules of Engagement / Tripping the Rift: Season 1 - Power to the Peephole* / Tripping the Rift: Season 1 - Totally Recalled* - [DVD]
Rules of Engagement: Changing everyone's minds about Apophis' "death" seemed a little too easy. It also seems like those stun guns could be a useful weapon, although they have zats, it probably doesn't matter. Not a very exciting episode
Tripping the Rift episodes: Just a general comment about the show. I bought this as a blind buy. I haven't been very impressed so far. It's just not really that funny. I really hate the bad guys who are clowns, just kind of weird. I'll stick with the show, but this may be one of the few DVDs I sell after I watch it.

6. Firefly - Serenity* - [DVD]
After months and months of hounding by a friend of mine, I finally started watching this show. I know it has a huge following. The pilot was good. You don't see these types of characters in a sci-fi show very often. I really didn't like the wild west motif and music. I know that the series has that vibe, but it was just *ok* for me. I'm trying not to rush to judgment, as I have only watched one episode.
7. Stargate SG-1: Season 3 - Forever in a Day / Stargate SG-1: Season 3 - Past and Present - [DVD]
Forever in a Day: I'm wondering if they always planned on killing Sha're? It wouldn't have been very good for the series if she came back, so I don't think there was any other way, but it was kind of sudden. I did like the episode and what they did with it, though.
Past and Present: A great way to tie off the Linea thread. There was only one major flaw in the ending. Even though they took away her memories again, everyone else on the planet will regain theirs, it seems like she would eventually succumb to the temptation of getting her memories back.

None , but I did go 11-2 in bags, made a 4-bagger, and in two rounds I made 7/8 bags.

8. Stargate SG-1: Season 3 - Jolinar's Memories / Stargate SG-1: Season 3 - The Devil You Know - [DVD]
Jolinar's Memories: One of the great early season episodes. The return of Apophis is amazing. It renews and complacency of threat that was out there. A great cliffhanger, too. Not the end of the season, but an excellent two-parter.
The Devil You Know: The second parter of the return of Apophis. I wish there had been some way to keep Sokar around. David Palffy played an awesome Sokar and it seems like they could have done a lot more with him. A great way to finish off the return to Apophis.

9. Independence Day - [DVD]
Somehow, I don't think I have seen this movie since I saw it in the theater. Definitely one of my guilty pleasures. Although completely Hollywood and has blockbuster written all over it, I really get sucked into this movie. Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman are perfectly cast. This is Will Smiths first movie that really made him a superstar. I absolutely abhor his once-a-movie all "bad" rant like he does in this movie, Men in Black, and other movies. It is so lame. I'm talking about the part where he has his rant while he's dragging the Alien across the flats. That aside, great movie.
10. Stargate SG-1: Season 3 - Foothold / Firefly - The Train Job* - [DVD]
Foothold: This episode wasn't the greatest, but did have some great elements to it. When Carter realizes that O'Neill is fake on the airplane and shoots him, is just a great moment.
The Train Job: I'm writing this after I have seen a few more episodes, so I know better episodes are coming. A am curious if the guy who they took the job from will come up in a future episode. I'm sure if this show didn't get canceled he would have.

11. Stargate SG-1: Season 3 - Pretense / Stargate SG-1: Season 3 - Urgo - [DVD]
Pretense: Any episode with the Nox and Tollan are automatic favs of mine. Kevin Durand guest stars as Zipacna. Kevin played Keamy in season 4 of "Lost" which is the best season of the show. Kevin was great, except it looked like he was wearing a dress.
Urgo: Ok. The best part of this episode is when Dom DeLuise transforms into Peter DeLuise (the director and Dom's son) for a scene in the show. Classic. I can't wait until Season 4 when I can listen to Peter's commentaries, he has amazing commentaries.

12. Stargate SG-1: Season 3 - A Hundred Days / The Venture Bros: Season 1 - Dia de los Dangerous* / The Venture Bros: Season 1 - Careers in Science * - [DVD]
A Hundred Days: This is a nice change-of-pace episode. It's not going to be a fan favorite, but it does allow for some additional character development for O'Neill. There seems to be one major inconsistency in this episode, though. When the stargate is opened, the "woosh" (sorry, I forgot the technical term) destroys/consumes everything, so why did they have to build the particle beam generator?!? Oh well!
Venture Bros: I've been hearing so many good things about this show that I think I was expecting a lot more and a little disappointed by the first episode. I did like the second episode a little more. The one thing that I find incredibly annoying is the voice for Dr. Girlfriend. I think it's meant to be funny, but it just bugs the shit out of me.

13. Stargate SG-1: Season 3 - Shades of Grey / Stargate SG-1: Season 3 - New Ground - [DVD]
Shades of Grey: Love this episode. The best part is when O'Neill meets Newman and says "Hello....Newman." Classic! Plus, my last name is Newman, so it's even funnier.
New Ground: These types of shows always get me riled up. It frustrates me to see people so closed minded. Although, that is the whole point of the show...if everything went perfect, then the show wouldn't be thought provoking, right? The main antagonist is a dead ringer for Bruce Campbell, and he was great in this episode. I liked the limp this guy had.

14. Firefly - Bushwhacked* / Stargate SG-1: Season 3 - Maternal Instinct - [DVD]
Bushwhacked: Ok, I'll be honest. I was a little disappointed after the first two episodes, but I can see the potential here. The characters are very unique in this show. It almost doesn't feel like a sci-fi show sometimes.
Maternal Instinct: Our first introduction to the <forgot the names of entities>. I always liked this episode. I know I say that a lot, but I guess that's why I love Stargate SG-1 so much.

15. Independence Day (w/Emmerich+Devlin commentary)* - [DVD]
Pretty dry commentary. This was an older commentary carried over from the laserdisc. This had a very interesting tidbits, but these guys really need to watch the movie and maybe take a few notes the night before.
16. Time After Time - [HDNet Movies]
I had seen this once before when I first got the DVD about 5 years ago or so. I am a big David Warner fan, as well as a cheesy 70's sci-fi fan, so this was right up my alley. I think this was Nicholas Meyer's first directing gig. He (of course) directed my two favorite Star Trek Movies (II and VI). In addition, he went to the University of Iowa, which is where I graduated from, so I'll always have a soft spot for him. I was really surprised at the blurriness of the sides of the frame, though. Wow. I've seen some of these artifacts from the anamorphic lens before, but these was almost distractingly noticeable for most of the movie. Mary Steenburgen looking pretty cute in this movie.
17. Stargate SG-1: Season 3 - Crystal Skull / Stargate SG-1: Season 3 - Nemesis - [DVD]
Crystal Skull: I think there could have been more done with this episode. A good stand alone episode. I can't remember if Nick comes back in a future episode. I would hope they might have a conclusion to this storyline.
Nemesis: Did I mention I love Asgard episodes? This is a 2-parter along with the first episode of season 4. The first mention of the replicators. What a great enemy. The best part is that I know more replicator episodes are coming up, but I can't quite remember them, so it's like watching it for the first time. The only thing that kind of bothers me is that at the beginning of the episode the fact that O'Neill shoots the replicators and they come back immediately doesn't necessarily meld with Small Victories where apparently earth weapons are effective against the replicators. One odd thing is that this is the first episode of the new opening. Why did the last episode of season 3 have the new opening?

18. Stargate SG-1: Season 4 - Small Victories / Stargate SG-1: Season 4 - The Other Side - [DVD]
Small Victories: The 2nd parter of the season 3 cliffhanger. Another great episode. I wish they would have made the destruction of the O'Neill and the 3 replicator ships a little more dramatic.
The Other Side: Rene Auberjonois guest stars in this episode. He's great as always. This one really gives you something to think about. O'Neill killing Auberjonois character at the end really walks the line and Carter's look at the end says it all.

19. Firefly - Shindig* / Stargate SG-1: Season 4 - Upgrades - [DVD]
Shindig: .

20. Independence Day (w/visual effects commentary)* - [DVD]
.
21. Stargate SG-1: Season 4 - Crossroads / Stargate SG-1: Season 4 - Divide and Conquer - [DVD]
Crossroads: .
Divide and Conquer: Ahem. Let's just say that Vanessa Angel can be in any episode of Stargate SG-1 that she wants to. I *think* this was her last show, but I can't quite remember.

22. Stargate SG-1: Season 4 - Window of Opportunity / Stargate SG-1: Season 4 - Watergate - [DVD]
Window of Opportunity: I'm a sucker for any kind of time travel episodes. This has some of the funniest/quirky moments in all of Stargate SG-1. When O'Neill and Teal'c realize that they can do anything they want since the day starts over, it is simply classic. His kiss of Carter right before the loop starts again is awesome. A nice reference to "Groundhog Day."
Watergate: It's cool to see a lot of Star Trek alums making cameos in SG-1. Marina Sirtis plays the russian equivalent of Carter, I suppose. This is one of the less frustrating Maybourne episodes. You knew he was going to come back. He still has a lot more sneakiness left.

23. Time After Time (w/Meyer+McDowell commentary)* - [DVD]
Nicholas Meyer is great as usual. He talked a lot about how it was the first movie he directed and isn't shy about pointing out the flaws or things he might have changed.
Malcom McDowell was also on the commentary track and he had a lot of good stories too. Most of them centered around how he and Steenburgen fell in love on the set of the movie.
There was one really odd thing, though. It was obvious that the commentaries for McDowell and Meyer were recorded separately, but the way they edited the commentary together, it's like they tried to make it sound like they were in the same room. They would put a random "yes" or "yeah" by one of them after the other one spoke to make it seem like they were recording it together. Very odd, I have never seen it tried so bluntly on a commentary track before.

24. Hellboy (Director's Cut) - [DVD]
I love Hellboy. I have never read the comics or anything, but when I first saw this movie, I was completely blown away. The look of the movie is amazing, the casting is top notch. I'm not sure anyone else could have played Hellboy besides Ron Pearlman. Amazing. The kiss at the end with Liz and Hellboy was the perfect ending.
25. Hellboy: Sword of Storms* - [DVD]
A solid animated feature. It is so nice that they got everyone to do the voices from the movie. The exception being that Doug Jones did the voice for Abe Sapien instead of David Hyde Pierce. Not really a deal breaker because Doug Jones played Abe Sapien in the movie. The animation was top-notch.

26. Hellboy: Blood and Iron* - [DVD]
I liked this story a little more than Sword of Storms. I have always enjoyed vampire stories.
27. Stargate SG-1: Season 4 - The First Ones / Stargate SG-1: Season 4 - Scorched Earth - [DVD]
The First Ones: I liked how they followed up on the "home planet" for the Goa'uld and how the Unas became the first hosts for them. It was perfect how they got rid of Rothman. I see he was a character out of necessity when Daniel left (for an episode), but it was definitely time for him to go.
Scorched Earth: .

28. Firefly - Safe* / Stargate SG-1: Season 3 - Beneath the Surface - [DVD]
Safe: I constantly get teased by the run-around they give you with River's abilities. They showcase them oh so slightly in this episode. I can just see myself being disappointed when I get to the end of the series because I know 13 episodes (or whatever it was) is just not enough to expand the characters... especially River's character as it properly should be.
Beneath the Surface: Another great stand-alone episode. Love the episodes where one character knows what the hell is going on, but other characters are influenced to the point where they won't believe that character, or have to take the episode to get to the point where they can. A good payoff at the end with O'Neill shooting the top of the window. You feel they have made a huge difference in this world.

29. Logan's Run - [DVD]
Logan's Run! I love Logan's Run. I love cheesy 70's Sci-Fi movies that have good stories (see: Soylent Green.) Do I care about special effects? No. As long as everyone has a mop on their head and all the computers are composed of a vast array of buttons, that's all I need. The story did drag a bit after they make it outside, but just a great movie. Box was so 70's weird/creepy. I think Box epitomizes exactly what I love about cheesy 70's sci-fi: weird voice, weird costume that looks like something I made in grade school, and it's moves are jumpy and forced. Perfect. The best line of the movie: "Fish, plankton, sea greens... protein from the sea!" I am going to try and use this in every day conversation as much as possible.

30. Stargate SG-1: Season 4 - Point of No Return / Stargate SG-1: Season 4 - Tangent - [DVD]
Point of No Return: The first Willie Garson episode. He really steals the show. I'm shocked that Gateworld only has this as a 5.28. I think I may be biasing this episode based on the later episode that has the same character in it. Having Teal'c's name be "Murray" is classic. I laugh every time that Martin says "Murray," it sounds like he's disappointed in Murray/Teal'c every time he says it.
Tangent: I suppose it was time for a tug-on-the-heartstrings episode. Not quite as profound as I remember, but still a very unique episode. I think this is the first Steven Williams episode ("X" from the X-Files!) I'm trying to remember if Jacob destroyed the death glider after they rescued O'Neill and Teal'c? I'm assuming they don't want that to ever get back to Apophis (although it is supposed to take 100+ years.) Some glass Richard Dean Anderson comedic lines, including "let me do the math" and his reaction when they get rescued because he's been oxygen deprived.

31. A Scanner Darkly - [Blu-Ray]
A Scanner Darkly, what can you say? I actually saw this in the theater(!) It's such a unique look to a movie, and while you're watching it, you end up not even focusing on the look of the movie, it just "makes sense" with no discernible reason why it makes sense. I am a big sucker for anything Philip K. Dick, so I'm sure I'm biased on my love for this movie. I thought the casting was brilliant. Robert Downey Jr. is pretty amazing in almost everything he does.

32. Stargate SG-1: Season 4 - The Curse / Stargate SG-1: Season 4 - The Serpent's Venom - [DVD]
The Curse: A great bait-and-switch in this episode. I remember when I first saw this episode, I did not expect that Sarah was going to end up being the Goa'uld (I should know better by now!) It's kind of freaky to have such a nice person set up in the episode, but end up being the bad guy(gal.) This sets up some future Osiris episodes.
The Serpent's Venom: Always love the Jacob episodes. They did a good job tying this to "Tangent." I really enjoyed the torturer, he was a great one-episode character. Christopher Judge was great as the tortured, but never say die character that we have come to know and expect.

33. Stargate SG-1: Season 4 - Chain Reaction / Stargate SG-1: Season 4 - 2010 - [DVD]
Chain Reaction: Maybourne's back. The writers do an excellent job to make Maybourne's character sympathetic, even though you wanted to strangle him 2 episodes earlier. When you have clear-cut good vs. evil in a story-arc, it's so one dimensional. Don't get me wrong, some of the stand-alone episodes, it's fun to defeat the bad guy, but for these ongoing characters, it's so important to make expand their personalities and backgrounds. This episode had one of the funniest quotes from SG-1: O'Neill to Maybourne: "Oh, I see you're on that famous beer and mustard diet. How's that working out for you?"
2010: This is probably the "end" of one of my favorite runs of Stargate SG-1 (that I can remember, I only got through Season 6 before I stopped because I wanted to get caught up on commentaries....but never got around to it.) Starting with "Beneath the Surface" 6 episodes earlier, these 7 episodes were just awesome in their own unique ways. This episode is probably one of my favorite stand-alone episodes. I love time travel episodes. I also like episodes that have goodie-two-shoes characters that are really evil. It kind of creeps you out when you find out that they are the bad guys. To look 10 years into a possible future was great. They hinted at a few things in the future, but didn't push themselves into any corners with the information they gave that happened in the past 10 years. Of course this future is not the future that is to be, but even alternate futures have elements of what will actually happen. I like at the end how Hammond just says to take that planet off the dialing program, all based on this note that came from the future from Daniel. No debating or discussion... end of story. I think they set that up perfectly from "1969."

34. Hellboy: Sword of Storms (w/commentary)* - [DVD]
Tad Stones and friends in this commentary. I had no idea that a lot of this story was based on real Japanese folklore. They tried to be as true to the stories as possible

35. Stargate SG-1: Season 4 - Absolute Power / Stargate SG-1: Season 4 - The Light - [DVD]
Absolute Power: The Harseesis (did I spell that right?) is back. I thought it was interesting how he taught Daniel the dangers of the information he possessed. I'm sure we will be revisiting him soon.
The Light: Not one of my favorite episodes, but a decent change-of-pace stand-alone episode. The actor who played the kid really did a great job. I always got nervous for the team when they would get close to "The Light" in this episode.

36. Hellboy: Blood and Iron (w/commentary)* - [DVD]
Tad Stones and company are pretty informative in this commentary. They do a decent job of balancing the technical and story elements here. It seems like there was a better balance here than in Sword of Storms.

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008
37. Firefly - Our Mrs. Reynolds* / Firefly - Jaynestown* - [DVD]
Our Mrs. Reynolds: I can honestly say that I had NO idea that Saffron was playing everyone until it was revealed in the episode. I think they played it perfectly. They did give you a chance to figure it out in the beginning with the salvagers eying Serenity, but it wasn't in-your-face enough to warrant any suspicion of Saffron (at least for me.) Christina Hendricks is amazing both as an actor and a true beauty. Whew!
Jaynestown: I am a big Adam Baldwin fan from his episodes of X-Files. This was a great episode to really give him a chance to shine. I thought what he did at the end during the rally and after they got back on the ship was great. This episode definitely gives his character a lot more depth. I believe the writers definitely did a good job for the episodes up to this point to do something here and there that made his character sympathetic so that this episode wouldn't just come out of left field. I'm looking at IMDB right now and it looks like they aired this episode 3rd or 4th. I think that was a BIG mistake. I am shocked.

38. Stargate SG-1: Season 4 - Small Victories (w/commentary) / Stargate SG-1: Season 4 - The Other Side (w/commentary) - [DVD]
Small Victories: I'll just talk a little bit here about the commentaries for SG-1. Most of the season 4 ones are either the Martin Wood directed episodes or the Peter DeLuise directed episodes. This is a Martin Wood one and it is usually himself, James Tichenor, and Jim Menard. Martin and James always provide a lot of quality information in their commentaries. They are pretty straight-forward, but never any down time. Jim Menard never says anything.
The Other Side: The other style commentary for SG-1. Peter DeLuise and (usually) James Tichenor. These are always lively, exciting, fun, and informative commentaries. Peter starts off this commentary by singing along with made-up words to the opening credit sequence. I could listen to his commentaries all day. Never a dull moment.

39. Stargate SG-1: Season 4 - Prodigy / Stargate SG-1: Season 4 - Entity - [DVD]
Absolute Power: Damn. I already wrote about this episode. I did like this hypothetical episode. Having Ronny Cox show up as the president was pretty cool. Even him in a reality that doesn't exist makes you think about what he might do in the next year or two of SG-1.
The Light: Hmm... I thought I already wrote about this episode. The light special effects were amazing. You felt like SG-1 and anyone else could really get caught up in looking at the light. I thought the actor who played the kid was great. You felt his innocence and his pain.

40. Stargate SG-1: Season 4 - Double Jeopardy / Stargate SG-1: Season 4 - Exodus - [DVD]
Double Jeopardy: Perfect follow-up to season 1's "Tin Man." A Michael Shanks directed episode! I really liked this episode. It was funny, because I noticed that Carters hair was long in the beginning of the episode, but she just cut her hair in season 4, so I just figured this was an early production episode that was aired later in the season. The kicker is that I've seen this episode before and I completely forgot that this was the follow up. The character of Harlan is _hilarious_. I was so great to see him again. "Yes?...No?.....Yes?"
Exodus: Great cliffhanger for season 4. I wish I would have been watching this when it was on originally. I am a glutton for cliffhangers. As much as I can't wait to see the next episode, it makes waiting the whole summer even better. I feel like I'm cheating with DVDs sometime. Great idea to dial the black hole stargate and send it into the sun. Stargate SG-1 always comes up with something new. Keeping it fresh.

41. Stargate SG-1: Season 4 - Upgrades (w/commentary) / Stargate SG-1: Season 4 - Crossroads (w/commentary) - [DVD]

Friday, July 18th, 2008
42. Stargate SG-1: Season 5 - Enemies / Stargate SG-1: Season 4 - Divide and Conquer (w/commentary) - [DVD]
Enemies: Whew! What a great opener to season 5 and a nice finish to the season 4 finale. I will automatically like any replicator episodes. Getting back to earth by allowing the replicators to take over was great...not they could have done anything anyways, though.

Saturday, July 19th, 2008
43. Stargate SG-1: Season 5 - Threshold / Stargate SG-1: Season 4 - Window of Opportunity (w/commentary) - [DVD]
Threshold: I was never too keen on the Teal'c brainwashing thread, but thank god they ended this thread. I did like the back story of Teal'c, but it just seemed to be too convenient at the end that he was all better.
44. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan - [DVD]
KHAN!!!!!!!!!! I think this is my second favorite Star Trek Movie after VI. It's hard to choose. Ricardo Mantelban is a perfect enemy for William Shatner. They are both over-the-top, that you can help but get emotionally attached to the story. Nicholas Meyer's first Star Trek. He did a fantastic job. I can't wait for the commentary. The death of Spock is played out perfectly. Kirk's speech at the end is emotional. Didn't quite understand the bagpipes playing, but we'll let that go.

45. Stargate SG-1: Season 4 - Watergate (w/commentary) / Stargate SG-1: Season 4 - The First Ones (w/commentary) - [DVD]
46. Star Trek III: The Search for Spock - [DVD]
This picks up right after Star Trek II. Although not as good as II, I still enjoyed it. Christopher Lloyd is great as the the Klingon bad-guy. Apparently Kirstie Alley didn't feel it was necessary to reprise her role as Saavik. Apparently she was interested in doing the role again, but the big-time called and money talked. I actually thought the actress who took over here was "more Vulcan" and a little more believable.
47. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home - [DVD]
As I'm sure is the case with most people, this is the one I have seen the most. Before I was a Star Trek fan, this movie was always on TV, and I just saw it so many times, it is engrained in my mind. Although the most mainstream Star Trek, there are a ton of classic moments in this movie. "Hello, Computer" "Double dumb-ass on you!" to name a couple. This movie takes place 3 months after Star Trek III, can someone explain to me how the heck they built a new Enterprise in 3 months?
48. Hellboy II: The Golden Army* - [Theater]
Guillermo does it again! I'm actually torn if I like this or the first one more. I think I would give the edge to the first one, but there is no let down at all. The Johann Krauss character is a perfect sequel addition. They didn't force too many new characters in this movie, which seems to be a problem with many comic book movie sequels. I was happy to see that Doug Jones was doing his own voice for Abe. Luke Goss and Anna Walton were great as Nuada and Nuala. Love the british accents. The music at the end was suprising, but after I heard it, I thought it was perfect. I hope the whole baby thing doesn't come back to bite them in the sequel. I remember how horrible that plot was in Superman Returns.
49. Star Trek V: The Final Frontier - [DVD]
It seems like people automatically shit on this movie. It's not a terrible movie by any means. I would love to see a Director's Cut. I have heard that a lot of the stuff that they changed really took away from the movie. A little more "mystic" than sci-fi than most Star Trek movies, but there is no reason to apologize for this movie. I thought the Sybok character was great. It would have been nice if they would have gone a little more into what the heck was going on with the entity that was stuck in the great barrier.

50. Stargate SG-1: Season 4 - Scorched Earth (w/commentary) / Stargate SG-1: Season 4 - Beneath the Surface (w/commentary) - [DVD]
51. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country - [DVD]
"Fire!" - When Kirk fires on the cloaked Klingon ship. This is my favorite moment of any Star Trek movie. This is the best Star Trek movie. Simply amazing.

52. Stargate SG-1: Season 4 - Point of No Return (w/commentary) / Stargate SG-1: Season 4 - Tangent (w/commentary) - [DVD]
53. The Dark Knight* - [Theater]
Are you kidding me?!? This movie absolutely rocked. I tried everything I possibly could to not watch a preview or read any reviews or anything. I succeeded in not watching any previews, and I did NOT look at IMDB before seeing it. However, I did know that it broke the record before I watched it. I also had one of my friends tell me it went above and beyond his expectations. So, I'm heading into the movie and I don't know that the reviews are so good for the movie, but I still have high expectations. Well, they certainly exceeded all expectations I had. Un-fucking-believable performance by Heath Ledger. His reveal with the pencil trick just sets the tone for his character for the whole movie. You have NO idea what he is going to do. You hate him, but you also are completely drawn to his character. Thank god they got rid of Katie Holmes. Maggie Gyllenhall was a HUGE upgrade from Holmes. Eckhart was great. Gary Oldman was great (as usual, he's my favorite actor of all time). I could go on and on and on. The sonar phone thing was a little unbelievable, but they set it up in the middle of the movie and _made it work_. I just can't say anything bad about this movie. A no-brainer 10/10.

55. Star Trek Generations - [DVD]

56. A Scanner Darkly (w/commentary)* - [Blu-Ray]
So much potential in this commentary with all the participants, but it ultimately disappoints. The best parts were Linklater and Philip K. Dick's daughter talking about him and his background. That was the interesting stuff of this commentary. NO talk about how they made the movie with the animation. That might be on one of the other special features.
57. Firefly - Out of Gas* / Firefly - Ariel* - [DVD]
Out of Gas: What a GREAT episode. Starting the show near the end and intercutting the backstories of the characters make this a 9.5/10 episode. Simply wonderful.
Ariel: A 1-2 punch with this episode and "Out of Gas." The first introduction to the men in blue gloves. Ultimately, there are more questions than answers in this episode, but there is renewed hope for River now.

58. Enemy Mine* - [DVD]
I thought I had seen this movie before, but I had definitely not. I watched it because in the Peter DeLuise commentary for the Unas episode, he said he used some things from this movie. This wasn't really my favorite movie, but it was a very thought provoking and unique movie. I have always like Dennis Quaid, and he delivers. I was slightly annoyed at the voice of Louis Gosset Jr., though. It was distracting instead of contributing to the movie.

59. Stargate SG-1: Season 4 - Chain Reaction (w/commentary) / Stargate SG-1: Season 4 - 2010 (w/commentary) - [DVD]
60. Stargate SG-1: Season 5 - Ascension / Stargate SG-1: Season 5 - The Fifth Man - [DVD]
Ascension: Love this episode. I love the episodes with the "ascended" beings like Oma Desala and, in this episode, Orlin (don't worry, Daniel, it's almost your turn.) The construction of the mini-stargate was awesome. It kind of reminding me of Sliders a bit.
The Fifth Man: I like this episode because you don't really know waht the hell is going on here. It's kind of got a Twilight Episode vibe to it. I thought the actor who played Tyler played him perfectly.

61. Stargate SG-1: Season 4 - Absolute Power (w/commentary)* / Stargate SG-1: Season 4 - The Light (w/commentary)* - [DVD]
62. Stargate SG-1: Season 5 - Red Sky / Stargate SG-1: Season 5 - Rite of Passage - [DVD]
Red Sky: The start of a "bad" stretch here in season 5. Of course when I say bad, I just mean that it's not up to the high quality I'm used to from season 4. It was nice that they have established this world as a place to contact the Asgard high council at will.
Rite of Passage: Anyone else think that the older Cassandra was completely mis-cast? I just didn't see it at all. It had the return of Nirrti, but that was about the only thing of interest in this episode.

63. Stargate SG-1: Season 4 - Prodigy (w/commentary)* / Stargate SG-1: Season 4 - Entity (w/commentary)* - [DVD]
64. Stargate SG-1: Season 5 - Beast of Burden / Stargate SG-1: Season 5 - The Tomb - [DVD]
Beast of Burden: A nice try to follow up the Unas episode from season 4, but it just didn't work for me.
The Tomb: This is the episode where SG-1 helps try to find the russian Stargate team. I was never a big fan of this episode. The ending was good, though... saying "bye-bye" to Marduk. I absolutely can not believe that there wasn't an O'Neill "Marmaduke" line in there somewhere.

65. Stargate SG-1: Season 5 - Between Two Fires / Stargate SG-1: Season 5 - 2001 - [DVD]
Between Two Fires: The Tollan episodes are some of my favorites. Narim is an awesome reoccurring character. It's really too bad that the Tollan were "supposedly" annihilated. I'm sure they'll be back (I can't remember). The return of Tanith. I think I hate him more than Apophis.
2001: Stargate does an amazing job at these cross season two-parters. 2010 was one of my favorite episodes from Season 4. This wraps up the Ashen story and they brought back all of the guest stars from 2010. I love how they gave them the coordinates for the Black Hole Stargate. Also putting the Stargate on it's side was a new twist that we haven't seen before...wait, they did it in a season 2 episode, I think, with the 2nd Stargate. Still a cool idea.

66. Firefly - War Stories* / Firefly - Trash* - [DVD]
War Stories: The return of Niska. I could have seen him as a continuing pest for Reynolds and crew if the show would have lasted. He is a great enemy, so evil, you hate him. The torture scenes were somehow scary and humorous at the same time. Another solid solid Firefly episode. These shows just keep getting better and better, it pains me to know that I only have a few more shows left to watch!
Trash: Saffron is so evil! She is really a nasty villian in this show...it's hard to hate her too much, though, because according to her character "but, I'm so hot." Opening the show with a snippet of the end of the show and then going back 72 hours was perfect. You think maybe she got the best of them, but there's more after that and it actually (for once) worked out for the Firefly crew.

67. Stargate SG-1: Season 5 - Desperate Measures / Stargate SG-1: Season 5 - Wormhole X-Treme! - [DVD]
Desperate Measures: Boy oh boy do I hate actually liking Maybourne. This is another episode where he helps O'Neill. Undoubtedly it is for his own gain, but he is truly helping these guys. There have always been characters like this in every good show, though. Love John de Lancie as Simmons. A wonderful actor who played Q on Star Trek. Just a great half-villian.
Wormhole X-Treme!: I am shocked that Gateworld has this episode rated so low! I took a look at the forums over there and there is so much hatred for this show. It's crazy. This is probably one of my favorite episodes in the series. It's perfectly tongue-in-cheek. There are so many inside jokes that are absolutely classic. If anyone would love this episode, it would be the fanboys, yet they are the ones who don't like this episode. Crazy. Peter DeLuise is hilarious as the director. There are a lot of Star Trek references. Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner end the show. The "outtakes" at the end of the show are a riot.

68. X-Files: I Want to Believe* - [Theater]
Wow. What a HUGE disappointment. I made it a point to not watch one preview or read any reviews or look at imdb before I saw this movie. What a turd. It had NO feel to the series at all. They should have let one of the old guys direct this (Rob Bowman, anyone?) They tried to tie it to the last episode of the series, but it felt so forced. Skinners reveal was weak and undramatic. Pedophile former-priest plus worthless sub-plot about Scully trying to save a kid in the hospital. Oh my god, are you serious? There was no paranormal feel to the movie at all. So much for a third movie to really finish the series.

Not sure how I will fare in this challenge, as I don't think I really have that many Sci-Fi DVDs, but I'm gonna go ahead and save a spot just in case.

incidentally, DeLuise spoiled a plot point from Jeremiah at the beginning of this commentary. As you can see from my list, I haven't seen all the episodes of Jeremiah before so that was a tad disappointing. Who would've thunk it? But on the bright side, I made it to 100!

Post funeral depression firmly taking hold. I'm doing almost nothing but lying on the couch eating pop tarts and watching sci-fi. Hopefully I'll never do this again for the same reasons.

1 - Wall-E - Way overrated.
2 - Venture Brothers s3e1, s3e2, s3e3, s3e4 - Best show on television.
3 - X-Files s1e1, s1e2 - Long time goal to watch/re-watch the entire series, might as well start this month. This was my favorite series on television for it's first 5 years, then I got behind and stopped watching, as my OCD prevents me from watching anything out of order. The last 2 seasons will be entirely new for me. Loved the pilot, brought back Kolchak memories.
4 - Planet of the Apes - I've been going thru my collection alphabetically, and need to watch the 2 of the 5 films that start with the letter 'B'. But my OCD makes me watch everything in order, so I'll just watch all 5.
5 - Beneath the Planet of the Apes - First is an all-time classic, but this one was a big step down.
6 - Escape from the Planet of the Apes - Much better.
7 - Conquest of the Planet of the Apes - Average film.
8 - Battle for the Planet of the Apes - Meh.
9 - Behind the Planet of the Apes - Very well done.
10 - Brainstorm -
11 - The Lathe of Heaven - Great old PBS film.
12 - Children of Men - Not sure how I waited this long to finally see this.
13 - Planet of the Apes (2001 remake) - Pretty horrid.
14 - X-Files s1e3, s1e4 - Loved Squeeze and the Tooms sequel later, very Kolchak-y.
15 - X-Files s1e5, s1e6 - Great quote in Shadows, Mulder: "I would never lie. I wilfully participated in a campaign of misinformation".
16 - X-Files s1e7, s1e8 - Decent take on The Thing.
17 - X-Files s1e9, s1e10 - Always enjoy Ed Lauter's work.
18 - X-Files s1e11, s1e12 - Loved Eve.
19 - X-Files s1e13, s1e14 - Brad Dourif is great as Luther Boggs.
20 - X-Files s1e15, s1e16 -
21 - X-Files s1e17, s1e18 -
22 - X-Files s1e19, s1e20 -

68 - X-Files s5e16, s5e17 -
69 - X-Files s5e18, s5e19 -
70 - X-Files s5e20, s6e1 -
71 - X-Files s6e2, s6e3 -
72 - Hancock - Fairly bad.
73 - Lifeforce - Haven't seen this in years, lots of fun.
74 - Planet Terror - Hate to overuse the word "fun" in describing movies, but this is pretty much the definition of a fun movie.
75 - The Mist - Not as bad as I feared.
76 - The Mist (w/ commentary) - I enjoyed the director's comments, and look forward to listening to him on his other film commentaries someday.
77 - Jumper - Great concept, but completely unlikable main character and average acting.
78 thru 83 - Star Trek 1-6 - The Movie gets too much criticism, it's not that bad. Two, Three, and Four make a great trilogy. Five has some decent moments, could have been much better. Six may be my favorite of the entire ST movie collection.
84 - Hellboy II: The Golden Army - Not nearly as good as the first, but enjoyable.
85 - The Fly (1958) - I think I saw the 1959 sequel multiple times over the years, and would confuse it with this original. Great film, even better remake in 1980.
86 thru 90 - Aliens 1-5 - The original is in my top 5 of all time list. The sequel is great, but nowhere near as good as the first. Alien3 is very underrated. Alien4 and AvP pale in comparison, but I still enjoy them.
91 - Return of the Fly - Good sequel. Poor memory had me thinking that
Spoiler:
Vincent Price turned into a fly in one of these movies, but I guess not.

92 - Parts: The Clonus Horror (MST3K version) - Saw this on cable as a kid, one of my first exposures to R rated films. Haven't seen it since I was 11 or so, and always thought it would hold up as a decent scary film. Hated seeing it copied by The Island. Seemed fairly awful, but perhaps I owe it the benefit of the doubt, and should watch it again un-MSTed to give a fair re-assessment.
93 - The Incredible Hulk - Very well done, but not as good as Iron Man.
94 - Journey to the Center of the Earth - Mediocre, but good family fare I guess.
95 - The Happening - Completely horrible. So bad that it is a must see.
96 - Deep Impact - My sister wanted to see this, and I thought it was going to be a new movie for me. But the more I watched it the more I realized I had seen this completely average and unforgettable film before.
97 - Predator - One of my top twenty or so films.
98 - Star Trek Generations and Star Trek: First Contact
99 - Minority Report - The more I watch it the more I like it.
100 - Godzilla: King of the Monsters - Wish I had time to do a Godzilla marathon, but I want to try to finish X-files this month.
101 - Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters 2 - Was that slip with Sigourney in the chair bare flesh or a pink bra, I can't tell.
The Dark Knight - Film of the year (so far), perhaps the best comic book movie of all time, and likely top 100 film.
102 - X-Files s6e4, s6e5 -
103 - X-Files s6e6, s6e7 -

162 - X-Files: Fight the Future - Watched chronologically, back between seasons 5 and 6.
163 - X-Files: I Want to Believe
164 - The Signal - Weird, funny, and engaging. A lot better than I expected.
165 - Zardoz - Decided to end the month with the last sci-fi title alphabetically in my collection. Never watched this before, probably never will again.

Done. Can't say that all this TV watching knocked me out of my depression, going to go try fresh air and sunshine now.
