Re: 4th Annual Summer Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge - List Thread

* = First time viewing
OTR = Movie seen during it's Original Theatrical Run
CTR = Movie seen during it's Current Theatrical Run (like Transformers 3)
Title in RED = DVD from my personal collection
Title in BLUE = Blu Ray from my personal collection
DVD = DVD rental
BLU = Blu Ray rental
OLV = On-line viewing
TV = TV broadcast

July 1
1. Charly* (1968) OLV Based on the novel "Flowers for Algernon". A retarded man is given a medical procedure whereby he is made more intelligent. Oscar wining performance by Cliff Robertson.
2. Primeval* S1 (2007) DVD Episodes 1 and 2 - Basically Jurassic Park as a TV series.
3. 2010: Moby Dick* (2010) OLV "Adaptation" of the classic novel set in modern times. Example of dialogue: Captain Ahab (played by a scenery chewing Barry Bostwick): "He took my leg, I don't intend to give him my ass!" I'm not making this up folks. Brought to you by the SyFy channel who seem to know no shame.
4. Inception (2010) BLU OTR Brilliant film about the power of the mind while in the dream state. Mindbending stuff. If you haven't seen, it do so immediatly.

July 2
5. Destination Moon* (1950) OLV Scientific accuracy is attempted in this movie. Better than average for its time.
6. Primeval* S1 (2007) DVD Episodes 3 and 4
7. Primeval* S1 (2007) DVD Episodes 5 and 6
8. 2012* (2009) DVD Grade-Z disaster flick.
9. Forbidden Planet (1956) An absolute classic!

July 3
10. The Six Million Dollar Man S2 (1975) Episodes: The Bionic Woman parts 1 and 2 Two part origin story for the Bionic Woman. Seen with commentary by writer Kenneth Johnson who by the way gets my vote for the best "commentator" ever, the guy is really interesting to listen to, really does his homework and gives you loads of inside stuff.
11. V S1 (2009) TV / Episodes: Welcome to the War, Red Sky

July 4
12. First Spaceship on Venus* (1960) OLV Enjoyable early SF.
13. In the Year 2889* (1967) OLV No-budget post-apocalyptic tale of a group of strangers besieged by mutants. In spite of the title, nothing indicates that it's the year 2889 since everything is as it was in 1967!
14. The Invisible Boy (1957) This movie comes as a bonus on the Forbidden Planet Blu Ray because it stars Robby the Robot. There is indeed a boy who becomes invisible but the main part of the movie is about a super computer who becomes sentient and wants to take over the world.

July 5
15. Unknown World* (1951) OLV A group of scientists funded by a millionaire playboy build a machine to travel underground where they find a hidden world.
16. Doomsday Machine AKA Escape from Planet Earth* (1969?) OLV A group of scientists launch from Earth and shortly after the Earth is destroyed by war leaving them to continue the human race. Bobby Van and a couple of other recognizable faces co-star.
17. Battle: Los Angeles* (2011) BLU Concentrates the story on a group of marines who escort some civilians to safety during a world wide alien invasion. Plenty of gunfire and explosions.
18. The Bionic Woman (1976) Episodes: Bionic Beauty, Jaime's Mother

July 6
19. Alice in Wonderland (2010) BLU OTR Saw this in theaters when it first came out but liked it more as a rental since I could see it in 2D. The 3D effect in theaters made everything WAY too dark. In this version, Alice is slightly older and is visiting Wonderland for the second time. Quite frankly, I found the CGI to be overkill and made me feel like I was watching a videogame.

July 7
20. Alien (1979) DVD OTR Seen with commentary by director Ridley Scott. This has earned its place as an SF classic and rightly so. Still holds up extremely well.

July 8
21. Frau Im Mond (Woman in the Moon)* (1929) DVD Silent film directed by Fritz Lang (Metropolis), which depicts a manned flight to the moon. The story is a long and the characters don't go to the moon until 1 hour and 30 minutes into the film. Little attempt is made at scientific accuracy since the moon has normal gravity, a breathable atmosphere and water! Not half as good as Metropolis but interesting nonetheless.
22. The Man With Two Brains (1983) TV OTR Steve Martin comedy about a man who falls in love with a disembodied brain. Wacky stuff.

July 9
23. Where the Wild Things Are* (2009) DVD I never read the much-loved children's book so I have no emotional connection to this story. Perhaps that's why I found it rather dull.
24. The Bionic Woman S1 (1976), episodes: Winning is Everything, Canyon of Death

July 10
25. Transformers: Dark of the Moon* (2011) CTR More CGI than anyone should have to look at. After awhile you just want it to end. If there's a Transformers 4 I'm going to skip it.
26. Aliens (1986) I consider this the perfect sequel, the story carries on from the original movie, expands upon it and delivers a film that stands on its own. Brilliant.
27. The Bionic Woman S1 (1976), episodes: Fly Jaime, The Jailing of Jaime

July 11
28. The Golden Compass (2007) OTR This could have been a great trilogy - if only the other two films would have been made. The problem is that, unlike the first Harry Potter film, this is NOT a stand-alone story. It's clearly the first part of a trilogy and as such the movie ends just when the story is getting started. I've read the books and can tell you that the film sticks pretty closely to the them as well as giving the tale the A-list treatment with a great cast and fantastic visuals. Taken for what it is, it's still a very good movie.

July 12
29. I Am Number Four* (2011) BLU Teen-oriented sci-fi with all of the modern teen movie trappings. Some good action scenes, though.

July 13
30. Alien 3 (1992) DVD OTR Some say this third in the series is a misfire but I liked it well enough, though true, it's not nearly as good as the first two. As with Aliens, which was different from Alien, this one is different from the first two and still manages to at the same time, be a sequel and stand on its own.
31. Tron (1982) OTR Absolutely groundbreaking film and decades ahead of its time. Still holds up extremely well and is rather prophetic in its depiction of a computer that does not let "users" use it. How many times have we felt that the computer was not helping us?

July 14
32. Biancaneve e i sette nani (Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs) (1995) OLV Italian pornographic version of the fairy tale. The movie has higher production values than your regular porn film. Outdoor scenes, costumes, and a real castle!
33. Logan's Run (1976) The story feels disjointed at times but this is STILL one of the great SF films of the 1970's. A film about ideas and concepts more than about rockets and ray guns. The last major SF film before Star Wars. Loosely based on the novel of the same name.

July 15
34. Chrysalis* (2007) OLV French SF move about a machine that can transfer one person's memories to another. A slow burn, but worth it. There's a couple of really good fight scenes from which Hollywood could learn a thing or two.
35. Zontar the Thing From Venus* (1966) OLV Zontar is an alien who plans to conquer Earth. He uses insect like flying creatures that place a stinger on the victim's neck and thus takes over their minds. Zontar also uses a human as a facilitator who wants to have special place in the new world order. Very low budget and kind of dull. Apparently a remake of It Conquered the Word, though I haven't seen that film.
36. The Mists of Avalon (2001) TV mini series part 1 Excellent adaptation of the Marion Zimmer Bradley Arthurian novel, one which tells the tale from the point of view of Morgaine (AKA Morgana LeFey) who is taken into the care of The Lady of the Lake to help shape the future of Britain by keeping alive the Old Ways with the then modern Christian religion. Great cast, costumes, sets, the works. Originally aired as a 3 part miniseries. I will list it as two entries instead of three since each episode was 60 minutes in length and the total run time is about the length of two movies.
37. The Mists of Avalon TV mini series part 2

July 16
38. Fantastic Voyage (1966) The then spectacular special effects highlight this story of a manned submarine which is shrunk down to microscopic size and is inserted into a man so they can destroy a brain tumor. Genre mainstay Donald Pleasence stars alongside eye candy Raquel Welch.
39. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part II* CTR (2011) A great film that caps off possibly the best fantasy series of all time. 8 films and not a stinker in the bunch.
40. Star Wars (1977) OTR Seen with commentary by George Lucas, Carrie Fisher, Ben Burtt (sound effects) and Dennis Muren (miniature and optical effects). To me this will always be just Star Wars, not A New Hope or Episode IV. A great movie then and now.

July 17
41. Time After Time (1979) OTR H.G. Wells (Malcolm McDowell) follows Jack the Ripper (David Warner) who has fled into the modern age, that being 1979, in a time machine created by Wells. While in the present he is befriended by a woman who aids him in tracking down Jack. Very fun movie.

July 18
42. The Book of Eli (2010) BLU OTR One of the best post-apocalyptic movies in recent memory. Usually this genre degenerates into Mad Max rip-offs but this movie tells a story with very compelling characters. The tales is that of a man who wals across the U.S.A. carrying a bible, the last of its kind, to a place of safekeeping.

July 19
43. Alien: Resurrection (1997) DVD OTR The Alien series is one of those rare series where there's not a bad one in the bunch, sure they vary in quality but at least there are no real stinkers. Having died in Alien 3, Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) now comes back as a clone and carrying an Alien Queen embryo with her. After having the embryo extracted she is allowed to live but only because she's a scientific curiosity since the Alien DNA has mingled with her own giving her enhanced strength and speed. A great cast (Winona Ryder, Ron Perlman, Brad Douriff) and some decent action scenes makes this film worthwhile.

July 20
44. Pandorum (2010) DVD Above average SF movie with Dennis Quaid about a ship on a centuries long voyage to another world after the Earth has become inhabitable. Along the way, some of the passengers have degenerated into cannibalistic mutants.
45. The Bionic Woman S1, episodes: Mirror Image, The Ghost Hunter

July 21
46. The Empire Strikes Back (1980) Seen with commentary by George Lucas, Carrie Fisher, directors Irving Kirshner, the sound effects guy and miniature effects guy.

July 22
47. Iron Invader* (2011) TV A giant metal sculpture comes to life as result of alien bacteria from a Russian satellite. Nicole de Boer stars and the only reason I watched this SyFy movie.
48. The Six Million Dollar Man S4, (1976) episode: The Return of Bigfoot, part 1 / The Bionic Woman S2, (1976) episode: The Return of Bigfoot, part 2

July 23
49. The Bionic Woman, S2 (1976) episodes: In this corner, Jaime Sommers / Assault on the Princess
50. Dollhouse, S1 (2010) episodes: Ghost / Target

July 24
51. Dollhouse S1 (2010) episodes: Stagefright / Gray hour
52. Second Time Lucky* (1984) Fantasy comedy about a wager between God and the Devil for the soul of "Adam" man. The movie is comprised of scenes in different eras as "Eve" tries to seduce him. The Garden of Eden, Ancient Rome, World War II, Chicago in the 20's, and finally the modern era in the 80's. Frequent nudity by the lovely Diane Franklin makes this one a keeper.
53. Fire and Ice (1983) OTR Ambitious sword and sorcery animated film directed by Ralph Bakshi where he tries to bring the world of Frank Frazetta's paintings to the screen. A very simplistic story but interesting to look at.

July 25
54. WILCARD 1 - Cat People (1982) OTR The back of the DVD box calls it an "erotic fantasy" so that's going to be my excuse to include it on this list. When I first saw this movie I had not seen the original 1942 version so there was nothing to impede me from enjoying this film on its own merits. I found it very effective and stylish and it also benefits from a great cast and a visionary director who made a film that inserts other facets into the horror genre such as fantasy and the erotic thriller.
55. The Bionic Woman S2, episodes: Road to Nashville / Kill Oscar part 1 This is the famous "Fembots" three parter.

July 26
56. Dollhouse S1, episodes: True believer / Man on the street
57. The Golden Voyage of Sinbad (1973) Fantastically fun adventure! Monsters, sorcery and Caroline Munro in a skimpy outfit. You can't go wrong.

July 27
58. The Snow Queen (2002) TV mini series part 1
59. The Snow Queen (2002) TV mini series part 2

July 28
60. Prince of Persia (2010) BLU OTR Very fun adventure film that recalls the Sinbad movies of the past.

July 29
61. The Box (2009) DVD OTR Intelligent and well made cautionary SF tale. Saw it in theaters when it came out and holds up very well upon a second viewing.
62. The Six Million Dollar Man S4 The Bionic Woman S2, episodes: Kill Oscar parts 2 and 3

July 30
63. Captain America* (2011) CTR
64. Tetsuo - The Iron Man* DVD Artsy? Avant garde? Incomprehensible? All of these things.
65. Brazil (1985) DVD OTR Saw this at the movies when it came out and understood nothing. Now I appreciate it a whole lot more even if I STILL can't understand half of it! Great movie.

July 32
66. The Bionic Woman S2, episodes: Black Magic / Sister Jaime
67. Dollhouse S1 episodes: Echoes / Needs
68. Tin Man (2007) TV mini series part 1
69. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1997) TV mini series part 1

Re: 4th Annual Summer Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge - List Thread

Numes' 2011 Sci-Fi Challenge List

1. Planet of the Apes [1968] new! imdb DVD
"Take your stinking paws off me, you damned dirty ape!"

2. Beneath the Planet of the Apes [1970] new! imdb DVD
"We don't kill our enemies. We get our enemies to kill each other."

3. Escape from the Planet of the Apes [1971] new! imdb DVD
"Zira, wine is an excellent restorative, I assure you, especially in cases of pregnancy."

4. Conquest of the Planet of the Apes [1972] new! imdb DVD
"The mere fact of your existence would be regarded as a great threat to mankind."

5. Battle for the Planet of the Apes [1973] new! imdb DVD

6. Planet of the Apes McDowall, etc... commentary [1968] new! imdb DVD
Uggg... This is why there is such thing as SCENE SPECIFIC commentaries. This is just some pieced together interviews that may cover a total of 10 minutes of the movie. C'mon people!

7. Planet of the Apes Goldsmith commentary [1968] new! imdb DVD
Wow, another stinker commentary. The nature of a commentary by the composer is that there will be a lot of downtime, but Goldsmith hardly talks about the upcoming music so one can listen to it and take in what he said. That's kind of the whole point. If you aren't going to talk about the specific cues, then talk through the whole movie, not snooze for 3/4 of it. Arg.

8. Planet of the Apes [2001] new! imdb DVD
"Damn them... damn them all to hell!"

    Looking Back
    Spoiler:

I'm much more into science-fiction than fantasy and my list reflects this. There are three primary objectives to SF storytelling: to inspire and/or reflect imagination, to tell a socio-political allegory or to tell a cautionary tale (typically about technology or the erosion of social mores), whereas fantasy is almost always only about imagination. It has to be particularly well crafted (The Princess Bride) to engage me and leave me satisfied.

Netflix made a big point of adding most of the Star Trek TV shows to their streaming library this month, but I made a conscious point of resisting the temptation to just gorge on Trek. I wound up not watching any Star Trek as it turned out, but I did finally get to several of the big movies on my To See list, including 2001: A Space Odyssey, RoboCop, Highlander, The Lost World (1925) and Blade Runner. I didn't fall in love with any of those, though I came close with 2001 and The Lost World. Somewhere in the discussion thread I went on for a bit about how Highlander was an expression of the late 70s/early 80s punk scene. That was fun to discuss.

This was also a surprisingly good month for me getting to the theater: I made it to four different screenings, plus I caught Cross at the Fright Night Film Festival in Louisville. That's five screenings in all, about half of my entire count (11) for 2010. Transformers: Dark of the Moon and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 were both what I hoped they would be. Also, I had fun revisiting three movies I saw in a theater in 1997: The Fifth Element, Men in Black and Starship Troopers.

Re: 4th Annual Summer Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge - List Thread

    01-JULY-2011
    1. Dívka na Koštěti (The Girl on the Broomstick) (1972) - Fantasy (imdb) DVD - Teen witch Saxana, bored with magic school (and a 300 year detention) runs away to the mortal world where she finds adventure and love. Fun Czech fantasy trifle. For all the magical hijinks the three young villains come across as borderline (maybe a toe past the border) sociopaths, giving the movie a welcome bit of sour with the sweet.
    2. The Nightmare Man (1981) - Sci-Fi (imdb) DVD Episodes 1-4 - An inhuman radioactive maniac is prowling the fog bound Scottish isle of Inverdee, ripping apart anyone it meets. Deliberately paced British sci-fi thriller that slowly ratchets up the tension until the satisfactory if somewhat underwhelming climax.

    02-JULY-2011
    3. Gumiho Gajok (The Fox Family) (2006) - Fantasy (imdb) DVD - A family of gumiho, fox spirits, come down off their mountain for a once in a lifetime chance to become human by eating human livers during a lunar eclipse that occurs once every thousand years . A murderous musical comedy with a sweet center. The musical numbers are all easy to sit through and there's not much gore to speak of (and it's mostly played for laughs). The special effects are kept to a minimum, but are effective when used. Worthy.
    4. Hardware (1990) Sci-Fi (imdb) DVD - A killer robot stalks an artist in her apartment in a dystopian, post-apocalyptic future. Richard Stanley's seminal work. Compared to other killer robot movies this comes across as a near masterpiece.
    5. Deadful Melody (1994) Fantasy (imdb) DVD - The martial arts world is thrown into turmoil when the magic lyre resurfaces, promising untold death and destruction, as all the clans fight to possess it. Classic bit of 90's wu xia, with a cast that includes Brigitte Lin, Yuen Biao Carina Lau and Wu Ma.
    6. Nemesis (1992) Sci-Fi (imdb) DVD - Ex-LAPD cop Alex is coerced into tracking down a renegade cyborg in low-tech pesthole Shang-loo (Shang-loo don't take no shit). The first cyberpunk movie, if I'm not mistaken. I'm not sure if the screenwriter really understood what a cyborg is and it is unduly influenced by Terminator. Not to mention all the industrial locations. Almost 20 years later it still plays pretty well, though.

    03-JULY-2011
    7. Ultraviolet (2006) Sci-Fi (imdb) DVD - Dying hemophage Violet attempts to protect an human child whose life will change the world, for good or evil, depending on who has him. I like it. Yes, it's flawed, but even so. The opening credits make plain the kind of movie it is and it lives up to that expectation, at least.
8.The Polar Bear King (1991) - Fantasy (imdb) DVD - A northern princess marries a southern king transformed into a polar bear by an evil enchantress. Fairy tale shenanigans follow. It's based on Norwegian folklore. I think the English version was over-reliant on the Narrator, but otherwise a pleasant diversion.
9.Doctor Who: Black Orchid (1982) - Sci-Fi (imdb) DVD Episodes 1-2 - The Doctor and his companions arrive at an English manor where a maniac is loose. Grand guignol Who style. Doctor Who: The King's Demons (1983) - Sci-Fi (imdb) DVD Episodes 1-2 - The Master mucking about in Earth's history, once more. Noteworthy for the introduction of Kamelion, who's not around for too long, but is still more likable than Turlough.

    04-JULY-2011
    10. Blithe Spirit (1945) - Fantasy (imdb) DVD - An eccentric psychic conjures up a man's deceased wife, much to chagrin of his current wife. It does betray its origins as a stage play, but then most stage adaptions do. Otherwise, Noel Coward's screenplay is very witty and charming with crackling dialog and a great performance by Margaret Rutherford as the dotty mystic.

    05-JULY-2011
    11. The Guyver (1991) - Sci-Fi (imdb) DVD - Hot-headed Sean finds and merges with the Guyver unit, turning him into a bio-mechanical super fighter. This is an okay live action adaption of the anime. The creatures are pretty good and the Guyver suit is very nice. It is in some ways quite faithful to the original anime.
    12. Doctor Who: The Infinite Quest (2007) Sci-Fi (imdb) DVD - The Doctor and Martha race a meglomaniac to The Infinite and your heart's desire. The animation's a bit dodgey and the story's episodic (it was originally released as a bunch of webisodes), but it still a perfectly good Tennant era adventure. Doctor Who: Dreamland (2009) Sci-Fi (imdb) DVD - The Doctor visits Arizona in 1958, looking for a good bowl of chili, and ends up in Area 51, finding much more than he expected. The animation is better, but the human character designs are kind of meh. The aliens look good though. I think this story was an improvement from The Infinite Quest.

    06-JULY-2011
    13. Just Another Pandora's Box (2010) Fantasy (imdb) DVD - A thief uses the Moonlight Magic Box to escape into time from Rose, a Taoist Immortal who loves him. Broad parody of contemporary Mainland movies, like Red Cliff, along with plenty of other HK movies, particularly A Chinese Odyssey. It's in the tradition of Airplane! and I suppose influenced by the like of Scary Movie and its ilk. It's hit and miss like these movies often are, but the hits are more frequent than the misses. Leans on Kung Fu Hustle gags a few too many times. Stars a lot of current and older HK actors and actresses. The more references you get the better it is.
    14. A Chinese Ghost Story II (1990) Fantasty (imdb) DVD - The sequel to A Chinese Ghost Story continues to follow Ning, now an ex-bill collector, as he faces life without his ghostly beloved Siu Sian, but finds that new supernatural adventure and new love are as close the next abandoned house. Great movie, streaked with melancholy along with laughs. No ghosts this time around, though, just demons.

    07-JULY-2011
    15. Bad Channels (1992) Sci-Fi (imdb) DVD - An alien takes over a radio station and abducts hot young women via rock n roll and the airwaves. According to the credits the Blue Oyster Cult composed and performed the sound track. Contains three music videos (in '92 music videos were still neat) to 'further' the plot. Nothing special, but it has a low-rent charm.
    16. The Web of Death (1976) Fantasy (imdb) DVD - The Five Venoms Spider, an artifact of immense deadly power, is stolen and used to try to take over the other boxer clans. Opulent sets and mist abound, as does the usual wu xia double crosses, miss-understandings and tragedies.

    08-JULY-2011
    17. Doomwatch (1972) Sci-Fi (imdb) DVD - Dr. Del Shaw goes to the isle of Balfe to check the sea shore for pollution, but finds the isolated villagers harboring a terrible secret. Good movie made better because the ending offers no pat answers.
    18. Kronos (1957) Sci-Fi (imdb) DVD - Aliens send a giant walking battery to suck earth dry of its energy. Plays a lot better than it sounds.

    19. The Indian in the Cupboard (1995) Fantasy (imdb) DVD - A young boy's magical cupboard and grandmother's key brings toy figures to life. Frank Oz does a good job with this fantasy aimed at children.

    10-JULY-2011
    20. The Day the Sky Exploded (1958) Sci-Fi (imdb) DVD - Franco/Italian doomsday movie. Disaster embraces the world courtesy of a malfunctioning atomic rocket ship blowing up at the wrong time and place. Interesting European take on the kind of sci-fi movies being produced in the same era in the U.S. and England. Mario Bava was the cinematographer and had a hand in several other aspects of the film.
    21. Doom (2005) Sci-Fi (imdb) DVD - Somethings gone very wrong in a research facility on mars and a platoon of Marines are sent to deal with the situation. For a film adaption of a first person shooter (the first no less), with a story that was sketchy at best, it's pretty darn good. It should be ranked among the good video game adaptions, which can still be counted with two hands.

    11-JULY-2011
    22. Sanctuary (2011) Sci-Fi (imdb) Hulu Season 3 Episodes: 13 One Night - Will's date takes a near fatal turn for the worse, 14 Metamorphosis - Will starts turning into a lizard. Sci-fi comfort food.
    23. Sanctuary (2011) Sci-Fi (imdb) Hulu Season 3 Episodes: 15 Wingman - Will & Henry's dates end up on an abnormal hunt. Clip show. 16 Awakening - Magnus and Tesla find a vampire tomb. Clip shows, meh. Episodes with Tesla are always fun, though.
    24. The Devil Rides Out (1968) Fantasy DVD - The Duc de Richleau battles the evil magician Mocata for the souls of his friends. Great movie, pity the sequels were never made. The sfx are dated, but it's dank with atmosphere.
    25. The Man From Planet X (1951) Sci-Fi (imdb) DVD - Alien from rogue planet, Planet X, lands on the god-forsaken island of Burray to case the earth for possible invasion. Snoopy newspaper man and evil Doctor throw wrenches into its plans. Mostly of interest because William Schallert plays a villain.

    12-JULY-2011
    26. It! The Terror from Beyond Space (1958) Sci-Fi (imdb) DVD - In 1973 a really hungry, pissed off Martian sneaks aboard a rescue ship returning to earth. No fat on this sucker, lean and mean.

    13-JULY-2011
    27. Horrors of the Red Planet (The Wizard of Mars) (1965) Fantasy/Sci-Fi (imdb) Stream - A Mars expedition crashes on Mars where they follow a signal to a city frozen in time. Wow. By turns inept and surreal. John Carradine makes a good talking head.
    28. Avatar: The Last Airbender Fantasy (imdb) Season 1 DVD - The Blue Spirit - Aang is captured by Zhao and rescued by the Blue Spirit. The Fortuneteller - The gang relax in a Earth Kingdom village menaced by a volcano. Bato of the Water Tribe - The gang run into a Water Tribe warrior convalescing at a convent. The Deserter - Aang learns to fire bend. Four solid or better episodes leading up to the climax of the first season.

    14-JULY-2011
    29. I Married a Witch (1942) Fantasy (imdb) DVD - A witch, recently freed from her 200 year imprisonment, falls for her next victim, who's running for governor. Funny and Veronica Lake, man o'man.
    30. The Ghost Goes West (1935) Fantasy (imdb) Youtube - A Scotchman is fated to haunt his ancestral castle until his clan's honor is restored. Good movie, reminiscent of the Canterville Ghost.

    15-JULY-2011
31.Robot Chicken: Star Wars (2007), Robot Chicken: Star Wars Episode II (2008), Robot Chicken: Star Wars Episode II (2010) Sci-Fi - Overall the quality is consistent over the three volumes. Lots of laughs.

    16-JULY-2011
    32. The Sorcerer's Apprentice (2010) Fantasy - A college kid becomes a sorcerer's apprentice and fights to save the world from Morgana LeFay. It was better than I was led to believe it would be; it was alright.

    17-JULY-2011
    33. The Imaginary Voyage (Le Voyage Imaginaire) (1925) Fantasy Youtube - A timid bank clerk has fantastic adventures with his beloved and two rivals. The wax museum segment was creepy, with an unexpected appearance of a guest hero.

    18-JULY-2011
    34. Alice Through the Looking Glass (1998) - A young mother falls asleep reading Alice to her daughter and dreams she is Alice wandering the lands on the other side of the looking glass. Kate Beckinsale is cute as a button and the movie is bursting with colorful sets, people and wordplay and no pesky musical numbers to kill the narrative.

    19-JULY-2011
    35. Eureka (2011) Sci-Fi Hulu Episode: Reprise - More mind altering wackness in the little town than can. Warehouse 13 (2011) Sci-Fi Hulu Episode: Trials - Claudia and Jinksie are off to Boston to retrieve Typhoid Mary's meat chopper; Myka and Pete investigate the cause several spontaneous cases of amnesia. Two good episodes.
    36. Aeon Flux (2005) Sci-Fi DVD - Four Hundred years in the future Aeon Flux finds that overthrowing the Goodchild regime is more complicated than she realized. As an adaption of the toon it's a failure inasmuch as it only captures a sliver of the surreal perversity of its source. Taken on its own, it's pretty good and you can recognize shots and images from the toon.

    20-JULY-2011
    37. Split Second (1992) Sci-Fi (imdb) DVD - In the water-looged London of 2008, two police detectives chase down an inhuman serial killer. I think this movie is just cool.
