Re: 4th Annual Summer Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge - Discussion Thread

Has anyone seen "Starhunter"? I bought the complete series (like 22 eps) for $5 at Target. Figured I'm not out of a load of money if it sucks.

I see that a second series was made called "Starhunter 2300". Any reviews on that?

--- Watch a Criterion version film -

The only Criterions I own are Chasing Amy & Walkabout, so I automatically can't finish the checklist.

Maybe I'll use a wild card.

Besides using a wild card your local library is a good place to look for dvd's. Even with Netflix I still ending up getting a few movies for the checklist from there each year.

I don't own any Criterions, so besides not finishing the checklist, don't think I'll be participating in the Criterion Challenge in September either.

There's also the option of watching films that have appeared as Criterion editions--doesn't have to be that edition

Good point! I bet that even without owning a single Criterion DVD/BD, any one of us could watch every Criterion in another form.

Back to sci-fi, I've decided to do only comic book stuff this July, concentrating on animated TV series.

My wife got mad the new X-Men movie ended the way it did. She wanted more stuff after that.

Just out curiosity what series do you plan on watching? I really want to get caught up on the comic book animation but there's just so much out there now.

Believe it or not, I've never seen a single Harry Potter movie. I plan to catch up on the series (my son has them all on Blu-ray) before the going to see the last movie when it comes out on the 15th.

I'm wasting a challenge spot by watching 7.1 right now, but I'll be glad to count 7.2 in theaters.

I haven't seen any either but then I don't have any drive to see them any time soon. Maybe I'll check one out during the challenge.

Our local video store is the kind that gets 800 copies of whatever the big boring hit is and not much else. So if I wanted to see the latest Harry Potter, Twilight or High School Musical, I'm all set. Anything else, forget it!

I just picked up the 90s X-Men series, Walmart.com had them for $9 per volume.

Will watch the 60s Spider-man series if I don't decide to sell it while it's pricey.

Sam & Max definitely.

Have lots of random other stuff, and may pick up some of the Batman animation, which is somehow absent from my collection.

Yeah, I keep missing the really good deals for them. I think Walmart had some sort of a short term sale a year or two back, with people getting a lot of the Batman 90s animation sets for ~$9, but I missed it.

Kind of hard to pay more than that knowing that it might hit that again, and that I have enough to watch even if I never end up buying them.

In honor of Peter Falk, I think I'll start off with The Princess Bride.

Re: 4th Annual Summer Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge - Discussion Thread

I'm attending G-Fest on the weekend of July 15th. So even though I won't be getting any movies in, unless I can make it to the theater to watch the movies playing that they are showing, would I be able to use the panels as entries for my list?

Unless I'm mistaken, panels would be closer to featurettes/interviews than documentaries, so they wouldn't count.

I'm looking at possible movies for the checklist. Would the 1998 Godzilla count as a remake? I'm not sure as it really had nothing to do with Godzilla except in name.

It's a re-imaging of the original, so I'd be tempted to have it count.
