Re: May 2011 Make-Your-Own Challenge Discussion Thread
My job has prevented me from doing the last few challenges but I'm fucking determined to do this one. I don't know what I'm going to do, I'm just gonna pick something to watch randomly and go from there to figure out what the theme is going to be.

Re: May 2011 Make-Your-Own Challenge Discussion Thread
Nothing wrong with that. I changed my challenge mid-stream when I got hooked on something else.

Never heard of it. Does it involve a severed hand that goes around clutching at things and stars Bela Lugosi as a mad scientist?
Dr. Gironda, inventor of a formula that can transmute metals into gold, disappears and Craig Kennedy, "super-detective", is called in on the case. Weiss Productions serial featuring uninteresting car chases down dirt roads, ineptly staged fistfights, lots of people standing around talking, and some of the least exciting cliffhangers I've ever seen. lisadoris - don't know if you noticed, but you're last two edits came out as new posts in the list thread. |

Re: May 2011 Make-Your-Own Challenge Discussion Thread
I think I'm gonna take it easy.
I think I'll call my challenge "The Many Mini-Marathon Challenge" Today I'm going to watch the NBC's Must See Thursday line-up (on OnDemand) that I missed because of last month's challenge. And several short single day challenges after that. Every day? I doubt it. |
Re: May 2011 Make-Your-Own Challenge Discussion Thread
For my birthday last year treated myself to about 25 John Wayne dvd's! On top of what I already had this left me with around 100 John Wayne movies! For my challenge I'll try to watch at least 50. Mainly to watch some of the unwatched ones...but I always love re-watching some of the classics!

Re: May 2011 Make-Your-Own Challenge Discussion Thread
I'm off to a fairly good start. I began with:
"King of the Rocket Men" as it just came in yesterday and I've not seen it yet. It was very good. I was impressed that they didn't seem to use breakaway props for fights. Chairs, tables, etc would get thrown, slammed into someone, etc. and stay in one piece! I had to laugh at one chapter (10 I believe) which spent almost its' entire running time doing a recap of the series. I've seen "Radar Men from the Moon" so when I watched chapter 1 of "King of the Rocket Men" I thought I'd purchased a duplicate title until a few minutes in. I then realized "Radar Men..." had used *lots* of scenes from "King of...". I'll have to puch "Radar Men..." further down the schedule to keep from having deja-vu... :) That was followed by: "Zorro Rides Again" which suprised me by Zorro *not* being Don Diego Vega but his grandson! It's pretty standard western fare from that era. Crooks (Investment Bankers this time) are attempting to steal... uh... aquire illicitly, a railroad line and the property upon which it's being built. While I have many serials in my collection I'm looking to pick up a few more for this challenge. One is a set with 3 John Wayne serials consisting of "The Shadow of the Eagle", "The Hurricane Express", and "The Three Musketeers" (which also stars Lon Chaney, Jr.!). In all three he plays a pilot. I'd not known until doing some research for this challenge that he'd starred in any serials. That one got ordered today.

...I wish. That at least sounds interesting. Here's part of what I wrote about it (but haven't bothered to add to my list post yet):

Advice taken although I just had to look this one up as I'm game for almost anything if it's a serial. In doing so I found "Camelot Broadcasting" who has *lots* of old PD serials and TV shows available for streaming, one of which just happens to be "The Amazing Exploits of the Clutching Hand". Many of what they have I've not yet seen, so in that case it's a good thing! :)
It's not that The Clutching Hand is bad. It just isn't very good. There's no excitement to it. It's a detective story stretched out over 15 chapters (the feature-length version probably isn't too bad, with all the extraneous crap taken out). There are some nice looking cars in it though. |

I've decided to watch films/TV shows that deal with the radio and TV business for my challenge. Any suggestions for lesser-known films would be welcome.
"Remember WENN" It aired on AMC from 1996-1998 - 56 episodes (a Christmas ep. is an hour, the rest are half-hour or so). It's never had an official released on any media and is hard to find. Most, if not all, are available on Google Video for streaming. The quality is *not* very good. You can find these on Google video search by using this formula: WENN 1.1, WENN 1.2, etc. for season/episode. S1 - 13 eps. S2 - 13 eps. S3 - 17 eps. S4 - 13 eps. |

Dimension X, I changed what I'm calling my challenge, but it's still substantively the same.

Re: May 2011 Make-Your-Own Challenge Discussion Thread
Started my list with the Chuck pilot!
My goal is really to get through seasons 2-4, but I was doing dishes and have the pilot on my ipod so I figured I'd start the challenge off with where it all began. I really enjoy the pilot, especially the parts with Sarah, so it's not a problem to rewatch it. |

Re: May 2011 Make-Your-Own Challenge Discussion Thread
I'm off to a rough start to my Bette Davis Challenge, as all four films I watched today were duds, especially The Man Who Played God, in which two (!) women (including Davis) swoon after mincing, middle-aged Geoge Arliss. At least there was the brief excitement of spotting a young Ray Milland in a small role. I suspect that I'll be wading through a lot of 1930's filler in the next few days.

I actually started watching that last weekend and only made it to the second episode before I had to take a break. |
Re: May 2011 Make-Your-Own Challenge Discussion Thread
Yea, I've had a few attempts and I usually get through the mini-series and then fade out.

Re: May 2011 Make-Your-Own Challenge Discussion Thread
Great challenges on the list! Saw a bunch of them that I would like to try.
Put a HUGE dent in my challenge today and watched 10 eps of Star Trek. And currently watching "The Menagerie" eps! |

Re: May 2011 Make-Your-Own Challenge Discussion Thread
I was exhausted, on the verge of crashing, when I saw the tweet a little after 10 that President Obama was going to make an unexpected statement related to national security. Instinctively I surmised it was the announcement that we had finally got Osama bin Laden, but I was so overcome by anxiety about it that I had to stay up to see the official remarks, and I've been up ever since. Anyway, the upshot is that I just discovered HUB is airing back-to-back Batman (1966) episodes right now which fits my Comic Book-Based challenge theme nicely. Dead Osama and now Cesar Romero's Joker. Nice night!

Re: May 2011 Make-Your-Own Challenge Discussion Thread
Knocked out 2 1/2 discs of [b]Homicide[/u] yesterday. I could have finished the third disc but I remembered that the next episode is so heartbreaking that I didn't want to end my day with it. NBC should reboot this show, it was awesome and nobody watched it.
