Guilty Pleasures ?

Re: Guilty Pleasures ?
As a film teacher of mine once said to a student who responded the way you did, "Has it ever occurred to you that maybe you're the one that's boring?"

I learned a long time ago that anybody who can dismiss entire genres of films as being unworthy, isn't to be taken too seriously with regards to film criticism. It also tends to be a function of age, so perhaps their outlook will change in a few years.

"Nobody knows how/a rapper really feels/A mindful of rhymes/and a tongue of steel"
--MC Hammer, "Let's Get It Started"
Although, I always wondered if that's not an unintentional indictment of the failure of rappers to communicate, since telling us how they feel should be their stock and trade.

Avoiding the idiocy of the thread, and getting back to the OP: Put another mark down for Showgirls. As well as the American Pie series, and the "movie" series (Superhero Movie, Epic Movie, etc). Ready to Rumble is another Guilty pleasure for me.

If I follow Spottedfeather's logic, you should feel guilty for liking anything that anyone else likes because that means you're just a follower. You should also feel guilty for liking something no one else likes because then you're just a pretentious snob. Which begs the question: why admit to liking anything?

The rappers thing ? I'm guessing that you haven't watch Mtv in the last 15 years. I can't think of one rapper that was ever on CRIBS that didn't have a Scarface poster and bragged about how cool it was.

Every accusation you've leveled against Portman and this movie is a matter of taste and opinion. Had you said Portman has a tendency to look rapidly from left to right when other people are addressing her on screen, that could be assessed objectively. You seem intent on painting me into a corner where I'm forced to declare that you "just don't get it" so that you can then throw in my face that I'm the one lacking objectivity. Sorry, but I'm not going there. I stand by my praise of Portman and the film.
Instead, I want to address the bolded statement. The reverse is also true: You can't say something is bad just because you dislike it. It just means that you dislike it. It seems based on your remarks in this thread that you have a pass/fail system for grading movies; either it's great or it's terrible. That's a ridiculously reductive way to come to art (and make no mistake, even the most commercialized tripe is still art on some level). Anyone can knock a movie for things they dislike about it or simply declare that it's "awesome" and leave it at that. Art is deserving of a more critical examination than that, and note that I don't use the word, "critical" in the corrupted sense of being negative but rather the literal sense meaning, "the analysis or evaluation of a work of art, literature, etc."

Just checked to see if there were any nominations for Ms. Portman this year and you're right. It seems to be universally acknowledged that she's a bad actress. At first I thought it was just your taste and opinion but knowing losers like this enjoyed her performance clearly points to it being a fact.

Re: Guilty Pleasures ?
When have critics ever really known what movie fans like ? It's not us that's voting for these awards. It's stodgy old critics who think their opinions matter. We can agree on this point. Most of the things that critics think are good, most people hate. This has almost always been the case, hasn't it ? Of course, sometimes they get it right and agree with movie fans. But you have to agree that most of the time, critic lists of great movies don't jive with the lists of people who actually watch movies...us the fans.

Don't be an ass. What I've said boils down to, if you could actually accept ideas from outside your tiny little bubble, is this...You can watch a certain movie and absolutely hate it, but recognise that it's a well made movie. And you can watch a certain movie and love it, but recognise that it's not the best made movie in the world. You're wrong about most of the fans enjoying Black Swan. It's the CRITICS that are nominating it for all these awards. It's not the moviegoers. Sure, there are people that like it, but that doesn't change the fact that it was boring and wooden. Natalie Portman is boring and flat. But so what ? I didn't say she was a horrible person, just a horrible actress. Does she or does she not act the exact same in every movie she's ever been in ? Does she have depth ? If she does, I'd LOVE for you to post some examples.

Can you provide a list of movies to back this up? Mind you, you have to show that this applies to the majority of movies and you can't just cherry pick to prove your point.
Can you start proving anything you've said other than "it's a fact"?
So what's your top 10 movies of all time.

Re: Guilty Pleasures ?
Titanic. Critics said it was good. Well, some did, but it's not. You didn't care about any of the main characters so, you didn't care what happened to them. I cared more about Bill Paxton and the old lady's girlfriend than I did about Leonardo or Kate what's-her-face.
Citizen Kane. Not a bad movie, but it WAS boring.
Pulp Fiction. Just an excuse to swear for 2 hours. Saw it once. That was enough.
Wall-E. I've seen it more than once in the last 30 years....and done much better most of the time.
Schindler's List. I just couldn't get into it. It was so depressing. There are so many problems in the world and you watch movies to escape, not watch movies about stuff that really happened.
Saving Private Ryan. WWII is just too recent of a war to interest me. Unless there are sword or laser, it's not for me. It wasn't a bad movie, just uninteresting and boring. After falling asleep when it was on, it took me several tries to get through it.
Godfather. Not a badly made movie, but extremely boring and pretentious as all get out.
My top ten of all time ? Well, in no particular order...
Star Wars
The Man From Earth
The Ten Commandments
It's A Wonderful Life
Jurassic Park
Batman
The Terminator
Back To The Future
Stalag 17
Alien

And...back on topic again:
Hillbillys in a Haunted House
Awful, awful, awful film to which I find myself drawn again and again. Ferlin Husky + Basil Rathbone + "haunted" mansion + country music = entertainment gold. I guess that it didn't hurt that I first saw it IN THE THEATER(!) when I was a wee lad.

Re: Guilty Pleasures ?
Well, all that being said, I'd have to say my biggest guilty pleasure is Starcrash. God knows, I've got plenty of other trash cinema in my collection, but this one consistently amuses me. Granted, for none of the reasons the filmmakers intended, but that's part of the fun. Another one is the 80's teen comedy Spring Break. Primarily because I was a senior in high school when it came out and must have seen it 5 or 6 times that summer at the drive-in. I don't think I was sober for any of the viewings that year, but that movie just brings me right back to high school every time I've seen it since. Oh yeah, and anything by Russ Meyer.
Regarding awards/nominations, I typically like to cite Academy Awards. Now, I'm the first person to agree that the annual winner is probably not what I would have chosen for any given year, however, I'm also the first to admit that the nominations are consistently in the upper tier of films for that given year. I might have chosen a different selection of films, but the ones that do get selected are certainly amongst the upper half, as opposed to the bottom half. That observation alone leads me to conclude that nominated stuff doesn't automatically equal crap.

I'm picturing one thing but I can't recall that happening in the movie.
On topic, I guess I'm the only person that isn't ashamed of the titles I own. At worst, I warn people that there's stuff in there that may not be their thing.

Growing up as a big fan of Soupy Sales, I'll have to admit I like "Birds Do It" since its the only film he's in.
Granted a large chunk of the film is him flapping his arms in front of a screen with clouds to simulate him flying, but its the best case of arm flapping I've ever seen
And the film co-stars The Marquis Chimps. Can you resist? Available now thru Warner Archives

I'm the same way, actually. While I can appreciate that others may question why I own a particular title, I don't care enough to hide them or anything.
