Sometimes humour can be subjective. Just like good and bad movies. There can be a certain movie that is good and you can tell is a good movie but you don't like it just because you don't like it while other people do like it. There can also be movies that anyone can plainly see are bad movies. Like Starship Troopers, Crossroads, and Avatar. These are BAD movies....for whatever reason.

Half these films I feel no guilt for liking.

Re: Guilty Pleasures ?

Haven't watched it in ages, but I loved Waterworld. Had a movie snob in my house a few years ago that turned his nose up when he saw that on the shelf.

Oh and OP fail for not providing his own example, even after multiple replies.

Re: Guilty Pleasures ?

I've been getting more into B films over the last couple of years and explaining off Hell Comes to Frogtown can be a hassle.

But come on, Rowdy Rodder Piper gets coerced by the great Medtech corporation to walk around the wastelands and impregnate women (since the rest of humanity has become infertile) in the name of the human race and fight giant frog people ..what else does one need for entertainment?

"I got to tell you, you're one weird dude!"

I have many guilty pleasure films.

Re: Guilty Pleasures ?

I don't really have any guilty pleasures. At least not specifically. I do tend to watch a lot of the animated movies from when I was a younger. The Swan Princess, The Penguin And The Pebble, Wishmaster, We're Back, Troll In Central Park,.....stuff like that. But I'm not afraid to admit that I like the Care Bears movie. I own the 25th anniversary dvd proudly, pink case and all.

You know, I think that's one of those movies that the general public was conditioned to shun and that's all the thought most people give it. The ridiculous part is, it acquired its bad reputation for its production spiraling out of control--not because the final product was bad in any way. Unless someone was an investor in the film, I can't understand why it should matter to anyone whether the movie came in on time or under budget.

I only saw it the one time, but I thought Dennis Hopper was a lot of fun to watch, and that the movie was pretty good. If I had one criticism of it, it's that I already loved Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and I felt like this was something of a retread. But even that wasn't necessarily a bad thing for me.

Re: Guilty Pleasures ?

Except for Kevin Costner, Waterworld was a good movie. Sort of Mad Max on water mixed with Escape From L.A./New York.

WATERWORLD...that's the one where, hundreds of years after water has covered the entire planet, they've still got cigarettes, matches, and oil, isn't it?

The crazy thing about Waterworld is that no studio would even flinch at that budget now.

I think grandma's boy is the best "happy madison" production to date! It was awesome!

Re: Guilty Pleasures ?

Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison are FAR superior to Grandma's Boy. GB is just trying way to hard to be the "cool, funny indie movie that only the highest level of movie lover can understand." If you try too hard to be cool, you automatically lose.

Really? I can't think of a worse way to describe the humor in Grandma's Boy. What makes you say that?

Re: Guilty Pleasures ?

GB is like this cult movie that people think is so cool just because it doesn't have millions of fans like other comedy, or indeed other, movies have.

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed Happy Gilmore. I hated Billy Madison. And I totally don't get the "indie movie"/"higher level" accusation.

It never crossed my mind to like it because few others do. It did, however, cross my mind to like it because I actually like it.

Re: Guilty Pleasures ?

The indie thing.....there are all these movies that people think are so cool because other people say they're cool and they want to be liked, so they say they like them, too. Movies that people think are so funny/scary/etc, but really aren't. They get to this "cult" level for absolutely no reason, crowding out movies that are actually worth something. Sorry about the rambling, but this is a subject that really P's me off. People talking about all these supposedly cool movies whose heads are so far up themselves that they cannot possibly understand how someone doesn't think that the movies are awesome just like they do. Movies that try really hard to "give a message" or do something to try to be different and new just cannot EVER pull it off.
