Re: Do you still have the very first DVD that you bought/received?
My first was the Dollar Trillogy from Costco in Dec 2009. I believe it was around $60 bucks. I was thrilled to get it and wound up selling it as part of a bulk sale a couple of years ago after I had upgraded to the Special Editions. Space is a premium and the old editions eventually have to go.

Bought Buffy Season One along with my first DVD player, a cheap mess that forced captions and produced an odd electrical smell. Immediately returned the DVD player for a better model and sold Buffy a few years later.

I don't recall the first one I bought. I think it might have been the Fifth Element when the format first came out and were releasing titles in the CD jewel cases.
I opened dvdprofiler and the earliest release date of any movie I own is 3/25/1997..
I do own 56 titles from 1997 too.. Any of them could have been the first.

I got my first DVD player on February 28, 1999 for my 15th birthday, I went out to Best Buy and bought both Austin Powers and The Truman Show, I no longer have Truman Show but I do still have Austin Powers. I'll probably never be able to sell it, so whatever. I do own the Austin Powers movies on BD now, so I have no use for the DVD anymore. I've had it for damn near 12 years!
I also still have the first BD I ever bought. I got my BD player in March 2007 and bought Scooby-Doo a few days before I got the player. I still have it though will be selling it soon because I plan to buy the double feature with part 2.

Yup.
It was the promotional disc of Bugs Life that came with early 'blueberry' iMac computers (Apple's first to feature DVD drives). Came in a cardboard sleeve, I think in 4:3 with no special features.
Can't remember what the first DVD I bought separately was...

Yep, I've still got the first three I got - Mallrats, The Matrix and Yellow Submarine. Especially happy about the last one, since it's been out of print for some years now.
I think The Matrix must have been a lot of folks first disc (or one of them). I got mine in in early 2000, same time as I got my first DVD player, which was around the time that prices really dropped on them, and they became more affordable. What's funny, though, is what I paid for next three players I bought over the years since, combined, still cost less than that first player did.

No. I do remember the first movies I had.
"The Matrix" and "American Pie: Unrated". Bought Matrix before I had a player, but AP was the first movie I actually watched.
I still remember being blown away that I was watching a movie in my home I had seen less than 6 months earlier.

the very first dvd I bought was the Goodfellas snapcase, for about 38 bucks. I let someone borrow it and lost it sometime later. I do however still have the second dvd I ever bought which was Royal Tenenbaums criterion. 9.99 used.

I have most of the DVDs I bought, including my first one. I rarely sell off DVDs or get rid of them unless I replace them with a special edition. There have been a few random ones I got rid of because they were so horrible I knew I'd never want to watch them again, but I can only think of two off hand.

Re: Do you still have the very first DVD that you bought/received?
Yup
It is Predator 2 R2 single disc release which I bought in December 2005. I've upgraded later to 2DVD SE but kept both releases on my shelf. The second one I am not sure but I suppose it was "The Crow".
I've got my first (and only) DVD player in mid-2006, LG DVX-9700, still using it for those low-quality DVDs which dont look too good with upscaling on my BD-player.

No. First two DVDs were National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation and A Christmas Story, which were both full-frame releases. I have since upgraded to the widescreen versions though.

Re: Do you still have the very first DVD that you bought/received?
The first 3 DVDs I remember having were Ghostbusters, Airplane! and Rush Hour 2. I no longer own Rush Hour 2, and the Airplane! was trumped by an SE (and I don't even have that, because I expected a Blu). I sold Ghostbusters as well, when the 2-disc double feature set came out, but eventually I re-purchased the Collector's Series edition because it had extras the Double Feature set didn't.
A survey of my shelf leads me to believe the DVD I've owned the longest is my original copy of When Harry Met Sally, which was probably one of the first 20 discs I bought. It's even more impressive, because it was in a pawnshop loan for which I lost the ticket and forgot to pay, so I later discovered they had turned my DVDs into stock and sold them. I found about five of them in the dollar bin, one of them being WHMS. I also bought the Collector's Edition of the movie, but the older disc has a different commentary.
