Re: Summer Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge 10 - Discussion Thread
I just watched WarGames on tv and was about to add it to the list but I checked imdb.com and theres no sci fi tag. I know it's mostly a thriller but I thought this would fit in. I don't want to piss anyone off by adding it so I figure I'll ask here first, if the general consensus is no then I won't put it on.

^It's been 20+ years since I've seen it, but doesn't the computer develop some sort of artificial intelligence? Sounds like Sci-Fi to me.

Yea, that's why I thought I would be safe but I know how heated some of these challenges can get and I'm in it for fun so I don't want to piss anyone off. Granted I won't make it to the 100 mark so it's not like it would really be a factor anyways.

I'll second that.
If you liked War Games, I'll also recommend Colossus: The Forbin Project.

Thirded for the inclusion of War Games. I would definitely think of it as Sci-Fi unless told otherwise.

And thanks for the suggestion Mister Peepers, I just read up a little bit on Colossus and it seems like something I'd be into. I'm going to try to find a copy for the challenge. My goal is to watch all new stuff but so far I haven't. My problem with the challenge is that I saw it late so now I ordered all these movies I always wanted to see and I have to wait for them to come in the mail before I can watch them. I'm finally getting around to watching Avatar tonight, I don't have that high of hopes for it though, but hey at least the blu-ray will look gorgeous.
I really feel like I'm slacking on some of the classics, There are so many great sci fi movies that I've never watched. Planet of the Apes, Terminator, I have no idea how the hell I've never seen these movies. Heres hoping I get around to them.

I agree. How ?! Terminator is a favorite, POTA an all-time classic too. Both would make my top 50, maybe 20.

I got off to a crappy start, the 1982 ANDROID w/ Klaus Kinski. I wasn't expecting a masterpiece, but I didn't even enjoy it on a cheese level. Has anyone listened to the audio commentary?

Honestly that's just the start. I plan on watching 2010 for the first time this challenge too. I've Seen Terminator 1 and 3 but I'm really looking forward to seeing T2

Wow... this challenge is making me feel old. I saw Terminator & T2, 2010, and all six Star Wars films during the original theatrical release. (The only time I ever skipped school was to see the Empire Strikes Back... lined up 2 hours early to see the first show.)

On a separate note, does anyone know how IMDB comes up with their genre tags? They list The Mummy Returns (2001) as sci-fi but list The Mummy (1999) as fantasy. They're essentially the same movie. Plus I totally agree that War Games is sci-fi

Think I've never seen 2010, but is that really a classic? 2001, yes. But wasn't 2010 a mediocre sequel?
On the sci-fi front, I think I've seen all of the more modern classics, but possibly haven't seen several of the classics from the 50s and 60s, except maybe as a kid on TV, which I usually don't count as "watched", since back then I just paid attention to action scene and monsters and didn't really listen to the dialogue.

I took an extra moment to look over my unwatched pile and it surprised me how many more titles are available to me this go-around since we've expanded the challenge to include "fantasy" - something like Beetlejuice which I haven't seen in ages.

I was going to save The Prophecy for the horror challenge, but it fits here so I figured I'd give it a spin.
And I personally enjoyed 2010 more than 2001.

Well, day 2 was done and now am working on day 3 material for after work. I've decided that each day will be a mini-theme day however loosely linked each movie may be. So day 2 was my Philip K Dick day watching A Scanner Darkly, Total Recall and Minority Report. Couldn't fit Blade Runner in, gonna try to do that today.
Edited to add: And holy crap, but I just checked the list thread and I see that a guy who posted after me, wayneaklein, is doing almost the exact same thing as I am. Great minds think alike I guess... or it's a sheep's mentality....

That said, I still am adamant about commentaries being allowed as separate viewings in the Horror Movie Challenge. I can't back down on that one!

A couple random thoughts about the checklist. I think it is slightly shortsighted to include a couple actors like Daniel Radcliffe and Elijah Wood only because they are so niche (Harry Potter / LOTR.) That forces you into a certain set of movies. I don't really see much of anything else besides Harry Potter / LOTR that those two actors could account for, where as the other actors at least have 2+ movies besides their "series" for which they are famous for.
And for the record, I am a big fan of LOTR and enjoy the Harry Potter series, so none of my thoughts are out of spite or anything.

I got a little sidetracked on why I was going to post to this thread. I finished Star Trek V again for the 4th or 5th time and I think that every time I watch it I enjoy it more. It's not really the black eye of the series that a lot of people like to make it out to be. Yes, there are a couple cheeseball moments (Uhura on the sand dunes...c'mon!), but there are some very interesting story points and background stories that come up in the movie. Is it one of my favorites... no, but I don't actively skip over it when I go to watch it like I do...say the first movie.
I'm gearing up to finally watch Nemesis for the first time since the theater. I'm trying to keep an open mind, but it's going to be tough.
