Dark Night Of The Scarecrow(1981)

Anyone remember this 1981 made for TV gem?. It was really creepy and atmospheric. It starred Charles Durning.

Anyways, it was reported last year that it was finally coming to DVD in a new special edition, and that it would be released in 2009. Since then, not a word. Anyone know anything about this release?.

This scared the crap out of me as a kid, and I haven't seen it in ages...I bet it holds up well. Long overdue...hope we see it soon.

Is this the movie involving a grain silo at the end? If so, I remember this scaring the crap out of me back when it came out (I was about 11-12).

I remember catching this back in the '90s on TNT's "MonsterVision" w/ Joe Bob Briggs.

That's the one. One of the guys the scarecrow gets revenge on gets trapped in a silo and smothered.

Really? I remember an article HorrorHound did a few months back that chronicled the restoration they did on the film and they even showed some screen caps. I've never seen the film but I was planning on buying the release. Hopefully whoever made that poor decision rethinks it.

Re: Dark Night Of The Scarecrow(1981)

This creeped me out as a kid too -- especially the ending.
Spoiler:
As he flees, Otis accidentally runs into the Bubba-Scarecrow, still holding the pitchfork, on which Otis has just impaled himself. Otis sinks to his knees and points at the Scarecrow, who nods, before keeling over dead. The scarecrow walks off through the pumpkin patch and finds Marylee, to whom he hands a flower. She says, "Thank you, Bubba. You know what? Tomorrow, I think I'll teach you a new game. Did I ever show you how to play the Chasing Game? It's fun. You'll love it. It's sort of like playing tag."

I was reading that during one my breaks at work. I was pretty excited since the restoration interview was pretty in depth.

Sucks if it did gets canceled

Yeah, that was just two issues ago. There was no release date mentioned but they interviewed the company doing the restoration and said that it was coming to both DVD & BD.

I have been waiting on this one forever. We had a copy of this taped off of TV when I was a kid and we watched it every Halloween. One of the scariest movies that actually stayed with me.

We were all stunned when the guy showed up later as a retard on LA Law. I guess that shows he was just really good at playing retarded.

Salamander2, where did you hear that it was canceled?

This was the movie that made me a Charles Durning fan - he was in the Muppet Movie, To Be Or Not To Be (Oscar-nominated), Tootsie, and, of course, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.

Agreed... one of the best made-for-tv horror films ever, and Durning is tremendous as the villain. Actually, a great cast of character actors overall, and terrific script/direction put this right up there with the best horror flicks of the Eighties, big screen included.

I was really looking forward to the rumored DVD release of this. I hope it hasn't been cancelled, and is just delayed a bit or postponed. Seems likely that it will eventually be released given the restoration.

I've e-mailed the company doing the DVD, but they haven't written back yet. This was 2 days ago. I hope it's still coming!.

Charles Durning was outstanding in this. His character was just a real piece of work. Running around in his mail truck. Lol.

Re: Dark Night Of The Scarecrow(1981)

Except for the original network airing, most of the re-runs of this tv-movie over the years have been an edited print, cutting some of the more violent moments. TBS and TNT always showed the cut print. Some local stations in regional markets sometimes still had the uncut version, but still probably had it slightly edited for time. The VHS from Key Video was uncut, of course.

I also heard the DVD release had been canceled, but I don't remember who exactly I heard that from.

Re: Dark Night Of The Scarecrow(1981)

9/4/09

The first ever DVD release of Dark Night of the Scarecrow seems to have hit a snag. Writer J.D. Feigelson has informed us that “negotiations with Image Entertainment fell through,” but wants fans to know that they are in talks with several other distributors including Lionsgate.

Please give my apologies to the fans. Like them I had hoped that “Scarecrow” would be out now. But there are always problems that arise beyond ones control. Let me reassure everyone that the restored version will be well worth the wait.

Feigelson says that a Scarecrow DVD will come out! We just might have to wait until 2010. As always we will keep you updated.

News update was taken from Horror Yearbook:

Seriously, between HorrorHound's article on the complete restoration of this film and their big article this month on the missing footage/history of Nightbreed, my brain is going to explode. Release some of this shit already!

Bummer about the delay - but it sounds like the restoration will yield a nice finished product when it is eventually released.
