Re: "Official" DVDTalk Challenges Compendium

Comedy list thread has been posted. Since I was late posting the discussion thread, I just did both at the same time.

Rather than try it on my mobile device, I finally gave up and installed Chrome on my laptop. So far, so good.

YMMV, but I found it all but impossible to do anything on this forum in Chrome. Firefox was considerably more cooperative.

Years ago I was Firefox exclusive, then hardware changes led me to IE/Edge and Safari, but the forum changes left me unable to do anything but post and reply. Chrome let me set up the challenge so we’ll see how it goes.

So the editor choices have been diminished, thread here:
https://forum.dvdtalk.com/forum-feed...rd-editor.html

IBJoel reached out to Chad and I, maybe others, asking for input on how the changes previously affected Challenge posts, and that he might be able to help us with workarounds. I know we’ve discussed it a bit before. If you have any input, maybe post it here and/or that feedback thread. Thanks!

Re: "Official" DVDTalk Challenges Compendium

Here's my input:

The forum is virtually unusable for me on Chrome now because an endless parade of background things keep loading and causing it to freeze altogether. That's the biggest problem I have.

As for the composition and editing process for new posts, it's not the nightmare that it first appeared. It's not as intuitive as I would like, though that may be more a matter of me needing to continue adapting.

Where the problem is with challenges is doing pretty much anything that relies on text from a post composed before the change. Specific to challenges as host, this is problematic because I copy and paste from one year's post to the next. That lets me easily maintain a uniform layout that only requires a little bit of alteration to update for the new year. I've been unable to do that since the change, because the previous formatting is not accepted. I have to go through and delete all the [i] and go back through to highlight and italicize using the current system. As soon as I do this, the post will not accept the [url= blah, blah, bah ] code so I have to fix all my hyperlinks. Ditto with colors and sizes. It frustrated me so much with the Criterion Challenge discussion and list threads that I very nearly gave up altogether and handed it over to someone else. I was thisclose to not even participating at all because I knew I would have the same problems copying and pasting the template I use for my personal list posts as well.

Re: "Official" DVDTalk Challenges Compendium

Happy holidays all. Unless someone else wants to take the reigns, I'll start the Oscar Challenge threads on January 1 (nominations will be announced on the 13th). Judging from the previous posts, I see I'll have some work to do formatting the opening posts. Fun, fun, fun.

Re: "Official" DVDTalk Challenges Compendium

So just random thoughts, but noticed that February is largely empty with the Academy Awards ending so soon in the month (the 9th). We do have our third Leap Day Challenge at the end of the month.

One thought to is to have the extra days be ‘bonus time’ for Leap Day. Another is to squeeze is a random one-off Challenge, or second Make-your-own for the year. Or just ignore this almost three week break.

How about a Music Challenge? It could include musicals, concert dvds, documentaries on music artists and music-related films (it'll give me an excuse to re-watch Spinal Tap!) It also meshes well with the Academy Challenge.

Just a thought.

In the past, there's been discussion of doing a Romance/Musicals challenge in February. I think those themes would cross-over well with the Oscars.

Romance would work with Valentine’s Day, and I always like music/musicals. Trevor has often talked about a drama theme as well, though there have been concerns about being too generic or too close to the Oscars theme.

I think musicals would be a fun challenge! I remember drama being talked about before, but I kind of feel like you can fit drama in most of the challenges pretty easily already and not sure it would need its own challenge.

Re: "Official" DVDTalk Challenges Compendium

Well, since no one has any ideas, I’d like to propose a Romance/Musicals Challenge.

Anyone who has never run a Challenge before interested in starting it up? It’s honestly not much work, especially after the first time, then it’s mostly an annual cut and paste job.

I’m not a never-hosted, but I’d be willing to do this one. As both a Hallmark watcher and theatre season-ticket holder, I find the theme appealing and have already started making a mental checklist.

Another question: I was thinking this would cover the Oscar gap specifically, but would it make more sense just to cover all of February like all other challenges that aren’t tied to specific events? That would allow for interesting overlaps with Oscars and time travel.

Re: "Official" DVDTalk Challenges Compendium

Go for it davidh777 ! I’d recommend including all things music related, as Fist of Doom Jr suggested.

The full month sounds good for me. One obviously doesn’t have to start on the 1st if they want to stay in Academy Awards until it ends.

My dislike of musicals is a matter of public record, but I have been expanding my viewing and there are a lot of checks to be had on ICheckMovies from some of the more iconic musicals. Plus, I dig the idea of concert specials counting. A shame Criterion's 18 film set of MGM musicals is gone already.

I hear you. I plan on mostly looking for concerts to watch.

I'm not a huge fan of them myself. I count on 1 hand the ones I'll willingly put on to watch without someone else asking. That said, I have more of them in my collection than that attitude reflects. I keep thinking I'll find another really good one but it just doesn't happen.

I don’t remember who ran it last year, but is the same person planning to run the Action/Adventure/Crime/Mystery Challenge this year?

We’re twinning again, I was just coming here to post that.

PMed Greg, but if he doesn’t respond in the next couple days how about you starting it Bob? It’s seriously only as much work as you make it. The prizeless Challenges here take the OP maybe 90 seconds of work for the entire month. Just cut and paste from the previous year, tweak the date, read the thread as you would normally for any input or tweaks, easy peasy.

Yeah, it's easy to host a challenge, if you frequent the forum. Which brings me to this: Does anyone want to take over the May MYOC this year? It is even easier to host than the others, but I just don't think I should host it, since I come by here so infrequently.

I might be able to, if my laptop is up and running by then, which it likely would be.
