-1 is great!
-2 is my favorite!
-3 is not a serious film. the director and others on set knew it was horrible. They didnt take any making of it seriously. But its Letherface so its ok.
-Next Generation is also ok. Better than 3.
-The remake & beginning are good too. Not as good as 2 but better than 3.

If I had to put them in order of best to worst I'd go with... 2, 1, Beginning, Remake, Next Generation, 3.

One thing we learned from that post is that Matthew McConaughey has a DVD Talk account. I wonder if he typed that with his shirt off.

I'm guilty of this.

I believe my thinking is that a movie I don't like all that much can be moved to my sell/give away pile. And with space being a premium, it motivates me to go through some blind buys instead of choosing a guaranteed winner when it comes to picking the next DVD watch.

First I replaced my vhs movies that I never watched with laser discs I never watched. I am currently replacing all the dvds that I never watch with blu rays that I also will never watch..I will repeat the process when the next generation of hi def kicks in. This dvd collecting thing sure is a lot of fun!

Absolutely! BUT... there are times when I'll look over the ever growing unwatched pile (they seem to come in faster than I'm viewing), think "I've watched enough awful/lesser stuff recently and deserve a reward", and go for the cream.

When possible i only buy the episodes or sequels i like but when it comes to directors cuts the obsession haunts me.Don't mind if the director cut is boring long (for example: H.G. Wells - War of the Worlds 2005 Timothy Hines) but needs to be complete. However theres one exception to DC fanaticsm: "Apocalypse now Redux"! Can't stand the Redux version for several reasons ^^.

Me too. I recently rewarded myself with finally watching all 5 seasons of Six Feet Under. Later this year I may finally get to Band of Brothers for the first time.

I also have several long anticipated, and much delayed, second viewings of movies I absolutely loved the first time thru. Examples include Saving Private Ryan, Toy Story 2, Ordet, and several Hitchcock films. But I just have this OCD about trying to work thru my unwatched pile, so keep putting off what I know will be great experiences. But then again, every great film was once unwatched, and I have stumbled upon some absolute gems with all these blind buys.

I won't watch a DVD until I own it. I don't rent at all and if someone offers me a DVD I really want to watch, I won't take it.

I seldom if ever double dip, and when I do I give away the "lesser" edition.

I have the save the best for last mentality too, I have 15 or so Hitchcock films that I have yet to watch.

I like to complete all series whether it be TV or movie series.

I'm the same way too. Damn. This thread is depressing me.

I'm going to try and slow the heck down with blind buys. Netflix is helping.

Re: How many of you are so DVD obsessed that you…

i always hit up the 3 for $20 at blockbuster for all the new release movies.i save a ton because one single disc nr is usually $15.99+,where for 4 more dollars i can get 2 more.i dont care if they are used because i always ask for the best copy of the title and we usually grab 3 or 4 and choose the best.then i have a box full of blank dvd cases so i just switch them out and they are brand new to me.

like recently,i just bought, The Wrestler,Bride Wars, and Benjamin Button for $20,when it would have been closer to 50 at walmart.so this way ive been able to buy way more then i could have.i also buy brand new dvds all the time, but i only get special editions if they are worth it,the digital copy thing is a load of crap,so i usually just go for the film itself.and my unwatched movie pile is to the roof lol

but my main problem is buying dvds that i think i will never see in stores around me again.im a huge 80s/90s action movie fanatic so if i see something i normally dont, used or new..i buy it,without going online and comparing prices.most of the time its just cheaper to buy in store.if its a certain actor i love,i dont really care the movie,i just buy it because he/she is in it.i dont really consider it a bad thing though, because its my hobby and ill always have something to watch, whatever mood im in for.

and as for the sequel thing,if its a saga..i have to get all of them.i cant stand not having all of them.even if they suck,i still want them as they continue the overall story.the same for say the punisher movies.i loved the 2004 one,so i bought the 1989 version and the new warzone punisher even though it was "just ok"to me.although the 1st 10 minutes were insane.but atleast i can say i have all the punisher movies..

First four Rockys for me only, please. First two Blades and only one (usually the second movie) DVD of any of the superhero series. I'm not necessarily a completionist but I understand the compulsion.

To that end, I did actully get Universal Soldier: the Return because I thought it was cool that Michael Jai White was a scrub extra in the first movie and returns as the heavy in the third (I passed on the second).

This is one of my biggest problems...I think I really do need help. For some reason I feel better knowing that I still have some great films to watch so I will watch lesser films first and keep some of the better films waiting, sometimes for years.

Here is another problem I have...I am recently unemployed and I'm not that upset about it as I can now try to catch up on my DVD viewing!!

Re: How many of you are so DVD obsessed that you…

For those with bigger collections...have you ever bought a movie you already owned? I'm not talking about a better version or double dip. But buying a dvd that you forgot you already had, and not realizing it until you get home and enter it in your database or put it on the shelf.

with 1000+ dvd's I still haven't done this, but when I'm in a store and see a cheap dvd I have to think if I own it, and it's getting a lot harder to remember.

Once with The Great Escape. I didn't realize it until I put it on the shelf. I just sold it last week, so I ended up losing about $1.

I do this all the time. I've caught it within the return period all but once I think, and just made it a gift.

Similarly, what I do often is buy a single release title that I already have in one of my hundred or so boxsets.

I bought another copy of Seven last week, after i I was convinced my copy had been lost/stolen/borrowed-and-never-returned. The original copy, of course, was still in the same spot in the same shelf where it had always been. I discovered this when I went to put the new copy there. It frequently happens that I'm unsure if I should be buying certain movies because I might have them already, especially older titles of genres I don't watch a lot of (westerns, musicals, Disney). If they're cheap enough, or easy to return, I'll buy em. Just in case.

Me too. I have only ever not finished a movie that I started, and hadnt seen previously, once. It was in the theater, and not even Charlize Theron on the screen, and what my date was doing in my lap could keep me in that seat, the movie was so awful.

Temple of Doom is by far my least favorite Indy movie. I dont really count Crystal Skull in the series yet, as I only saw it once. I still own it though, as it was part of the box set.

I have the second and third Terminators, but not the first. Go figure.

What did you think the thread was going to be about based on the "vague" title?

I have done this just once. And it was with a Tv on DVD set, that I saw on sale for a great price. Turns out, I had already gotten it, for an even better price. The set was in my unwatched pile.
