I think the question to ask is when we can expect a better release of this from another region? I'm not going to buy the Magnolia release off Amazon if I run the risk of getting the botched subtitles.

(I'm in Australia and won't buy R4 DVDs because of the huge ratings signs.)

I do completely feel that the extreme of the anti-Magnolia side is severely over reacting.

The "Eli/I'm trapped" thing is a total non issue.

I look at the comparison shots with the "corrected" subtitles, remember that scene, and don't feel that I was at a loss by having seen it the incorrect way.

I'm pretty sure that very few, if any, people here would have noticed it enough to post if they didn't see the bloggers go at it first.

What? That has nothing to do whatsoever with the content of the film, which is what's important. You're caring too much about the wrong thing.

You're right. The more I looked into the issue the more I think the complaint is a total over reaction. All subtitled films have similar issues. The "problems" with this particular film's subtitles are incredibly minor and not worth complaining about. imo

So would you happily replace all your physical DVDs with digital copies stored on a device?

Speaking for myself, I would not put my faith in a single device. Hard drives fail. Barring a fire, tornado or burglary --- all of which are covered by insurance --- my physical discs are more reliable.

And here:

I'd say those two are being too nice. The DVD subs are so incredibly far from being a 'more literal' translation it's laughable. They are more like lines from a synopsis. Several lines of dialogue aren't translated at all - entire conversations are just abridged to a few words. Sometimes they are just flat out incorrect.

Personally I'd like to see what the director intended for us to see and hear. I'm pretty sure those subs are far from his vision of the film.

I don't think we'll ever see that for any film (with a different language). Maybe if the director if completely fluent in both languages and personally does the subtitles.

All language is subject to a huge spread of interpretation. Even the English subtitles on English films are often "wrong". Throw another language into the mix and there are always going to be issues.

Then import the Swedish dvd (or any release with the same subs)

Worked for Del Toro on Pan's Labyrinth...

I'm beginning to wonder if they're ever going to release the corrected version. If they think they're going to sell through the other version, then they clearly don't get that many people are refusing to buy it until the fix comes in.

How many do you really think fit that? I can't imagine there being more than a few thousand people that even know about the problem, and only a very small percentage of them caring enough to hold off on a purchase.

I think they are blowing smoke up people's asses just so they can shut-up. I doubt they will follow through with their promise. I will believe it when I see it.

I check whenever I'm in my local Best Buy and they're still the original at mine as of last week. Looks like they're selling some as the quantities range from two to four copies.

As soon as it's 100% on the subtitles being corrected, this will be mine on DVD or Blu.

Until then I'll keep the copy I have now with correct subtitles.

If the UK BD is region free, then I'm not waiting for the American version to get fixed any longer.
