Re: Martyrs (R1)---04/28/09
Thanks a lot for the offer Giles, but problem solved.
And this is where I solved my problem. I went and bought a different copy at Walmart, removed the slipcase and returned it. Is this wrong? At least their copy had the same artwork on both, so no ones missing out on anything....right? Plus most of them get all smashed from the way they are stored behind those metal things...I had to grab one from the back that wasn't already tore up.
I didn't even notice that it didn't say "Unrated" on the copy until I read Scott's post. So that's even better bc I hate those labels on the artwork.

The thing with Dimension Extreme titles is this. Only Blockbuster and Wal-Mart will get the R rated versions if unrated versions are also released. So basically don't bother with Wal-Mart at all about D.E. titles.
No other websites sell the R rated versions that i'm aware of. So while it may look like they're only being released unrated, that is not the case.
It all seemed to start when Teeth was released, which despite being R rated. Wal-Mart refused to carry it because of the plot! Then Inside was released and Wal-Mart originally did have that in some locations unrated(the R version was for Blockbuster rental only at the time). It was quickly pulled from the shelves though. Ever since then, Wal-Mart has also been carrying the R rated D.E. titles like Blockbuster has.
So basically don't go to WM looking to buy D.E. titles that have unrated releases! And becareful when renting D.E. titles from Blockbuster! They may have been creating cut versions for the chain for awhile with specific titles. I was surprised to find out an R rated version of 13:Game Of Death with about 10 minutes cut from it existed, after only seeing the unrated version available everywhere else(including Wal-Mart!),
On the plus side, it looks like only 2-3 minutes is missing from the R rated version. Sure that is a lot of footage if it's all gore and stuff. But if the film is as graphic and prolonged as it said to be. It may still be effective, so you may as well bite the bullet and watch it if you can't return it at all.
I on the other hand am thinking of just renting this film sometime despite it being cut. Since I've been extremely disappointed with the new French horror films so far.

Also, your Walmart copy doesn't have the extras, AFAIK.

i rented at BBV and they had the Unrated, so you wouldn't have to get cut if you go that route.
anyway, i had success! at Walmart. i just had to talk to the media manager and showed him the online listings and he ok'd it within a minute. will get the "correct" edition on the way to a family thing at BB tomorrow. all in all it works out and i will have the cut i want.
and i have to give a special shout out to 'asianxcore'. if he didn't post the different cover art thing i don't know if and when i would have noticed that i had the cut version as i hadn't planned on watching for awhile.

Re: Martyrs (R1)---04/28/09
it did list all the extras on case: intro by director, 1-hour making-of, etc. but i didn't check actual disc. are you saying the extras are listed, but not on disc, ala "Slumdog Millionaire"?

It's funny how the comment I made on different DVD Jacket/Slipcase Art led to this

I will go check the Blockbuster by my house and see what version they have and probably rent it. If they have the unrated version, that's great. But if they don't, oh well.
I do know some Blockbusters may carry unrated versions while others will not. I know some have mentioned finding the unrated Hatchet for rental at BlockB, and yet all locations in St Paul have only had the R rated version.
But after being burned by Inside, I don't want to take the chance of blind buying these films at all. I can't afford to do that anymore. The main reason I took the chance on Inside was, the rental version was heavily cut(75 minutes, compared to 82 minutes!), and I saw it available at Wal-Mart for a decent price. Of course after I bought it, it was pulled from the shelves. I was shocked to see it there originally myself with the original packaging. I expected the imagery on the back to be altered at the very least and yet it was not.
Meanwhile I decided to check out Frontiers when it was on Fearnet.com and I couldn't finish the film. So far, I've only liked High Tension and Irreversible out of the 'new French extreme/horror cinema' trend.
Did you rent it or buy it? Sometimes the Weinstein rental versions which are exclusive to Blockbuster lack the extra features fully, or have a 'bonus' that's not available on the official release.

[QUOTE=asianxcore;9434625]I actually liked Frontier(s). Have you seen Malefique? Liked that too

No I haven't seen that yet. I may try to see all of Frontier(s) someday, but I just couldn't get through it after 40 minutes. It just was not doing anything for me.

It was completely rented, so I wound up not getting anything tonight. However, it appears they only have the R version for rental based on the postcard they had in the space for it on the shelf. It does not say 'unrated' on it and is just the basic cover used for the R version/slipcover.

I agree I thought Frontier(s) was very flawed.

Wow, Julie, other than my girlfriend, you are the only woman I've heard say they liked Irreversible. I find Noe very intriguing, and Irreversible, coupled with his earlier film, I Stand Alone, are the most disturbing movies I've ever seen. I'm eagerly awaiting his new one, Enter the Void.

Re: Martyrs (R1)---04/28/09
I saw this at the Toronto Film Fest midnight screening last year, and found it to be a rather desperate film (and the after-show audience response, according to an organizer, was tepid). Made by a modestly-talented filmmaker desperate to leave his mark in a very crowded and tired genre (he all but admitted this at the fest, in a roundabout way), and desperate to "top" every other torture-based horror movie of recent vintage to the point that after the first half there's no longer much of a plot but instead a series of torture and brutality sessions performed on the heroine (nice to show her final state in those photos, Lick ) to rob her and the audience of any last semblance of humanity, then dropping an inconclusive ending that provokes condescending titters and repulsion in equal measure. I guess that qualifies as a success in the minds of the filmmakers and less discriminating fans of this stuff (of which I'm sure there will be many), but the attempts at intellectual provocation were frustratingly weak considering the marathon effort put into beating the audience into submission right along with their lead actress in preparation for the big "revelation". And you know Laugier and company were trying hard to make you think they had a really deep point, albeit one Laugier himself couldn't explain at the Q&A . Could've been something much more interesting, but at least it delivers the gore, if that's still a raison d'etre after all these years.
I believe this was a Canadian co-production (we're so proud of it it never played theatres), which might explain the deluxe edition supposedly being released up here.

Meanwhile the likes of Inside severely let me down and I found unpleasent, stupid, and worse of all boring! So i've largely been let down by most of the French horror/extreme films that get hyped up and all.

I haven't seen Noes other films yet. But I was impressed by Irreversible and the camera style and everything. Sure it was disturbing and unpleasent, but it kept my attention and certainlly was different. So while I wouldn't watch the film often(it's been a few years now), I did see it a few times and still found it worth watching.

I, on the other hand, liked the ultra savagery and copious amounts of blood of 'Inside'
