Martyrs (R1)---04/28/09
Amazon just put this up for pre-order for a very nice price of $13.99. As of now there are no special features listed. Pre-order here
http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/2348/martyrs.jpg Horror fans will want to jump on this one, especially if you are fans of recent French films such as High Tension or Inside. Of course they had to go and nearly ruin the cover with the horrible UNRATED trend, but I guess people may be used to this by now. I mean look at the 2 leads on the cover, they even look pissed about it. |
Re: Martyrs (R1)---04/28/09
Been looking forward to this release for a long time now.
Glad to see it's only a month away. |
Re: Martyrs (R1)---04/28/09

Re: Martyrs (R1)---04/28/09
Other sites are saying it will have a BTS doc.
I saw this recently and I still don't know what to make of it. It's enjoyable in the sense that there has never been anything like it, but the word "ferocious" on the box cover is an understatement of epic proportions. I didn't mind it because I found it so ballsy that I was slack-jawed, but it makes such a sharp left turn in the third act that it leaves you truly stunned at what you're viewing. Also, this is one of those flicks where even reading a synopsis of it could spoil the movie for you. My advice would be to see it without knowing much about it AT ALL. |
Re: Martyrs (R1)---04/28/09
Pre-ordered this along with Let The Right One In.
Thanks for the heads up. |
Re: Martyrs (R1)---04/28/09
I took a bunch of Screen shots, they can be found here.. There are spoilers of course, but with this film they don't really matter.

Re: Martyrs (R1)---04/28/09
Well, what I meant by that is it's like saying Inside is about a woman being terrorized in her home. Even knowing the plot takes absolutely nothing away from the experience.
but yeah, if you don't want certain things in the film ruined, skip over my post. |
Re: Martyrs (R1)---04/28/09
Yeah, I just know that I went into the film with hardly any knowledge on the story other than it being called brutal. So, I was very surprised at some of the directions the story took and if I had seen those pictures beforehand it wouldn't have had the same effect. Similar to the constant trailers for Quarantine which completely ruined the ending of [Rec] for me. You didn't know exactly how the movie would play out, but were constantly waiting for

Re: Martyrs (R1)---04/28/09
There's a Canadian release that is out about a month earlier (3/24) and is, I think, a 2-disc set.

Re: Martyrs (R1)---04/28/09
after LickTheABCs's hype over this in the "Disturbing Films" thread, i jumped at d/ling a torrent of this not knowing it was being released on dvd real soon. sure enough, my d/led version didn't have workable subtitles. however, i am rushing to buy this when it comes out. stoked!

Of course they had to go and nearly ruin the cover with the horrible UNRATED trend, but I guess people may be used to this by now. I mean look at the 2 leads on the cover, they even look pissed about it. I loved High Tension, but hated Inside. So where would that place me in regards to this film? Oh and the reason the unrated tag is on the cover is quite simple in this case. Dimension Extreme is also releasing an R rated version for Blockbuster and Wal-Mart(and any other stores that refuse to carry certain unrated titles). They'll have the same covers, but one will state unrated, while one will not. So be careful when purchasing/renting the dvd! Rated R for disturbing/severe aberrant behavior involving strong bloody violence, torture, child abuse and some nudity |
Re: Martyrs (R1)---04/28/09
I've wanted to see this for a while now. Too bad it doesn't look like we'll be getting it on BD like the UK, but I'll still buy this edition.

Re: Martyrs (R1)---04/28/09
I saw this at the Toronto Film Fest midnight screening last year, and found it to be a rather desperate film (and the after-show audience response, according to an organizer, was tepid). Made by a modestly-talented filmmaker desperate to leave his mark in a very crowded and tired genre (he all but admitted this at the fest, in a roundabout way), and desperate to "top" every other torture-based horror movie of recent vintage to the point that after the first half there's no longer much of a plot but instead a series of torture and brutality sessions performed on the heroine (nice to show her final state in those photos, Lick ;) ) to rob her and the audience of any last semblance of humanity, then dropping an inconclusive ending that provokes condescending titters and repulsion in equal measure. I guess that qualifies as a success in the minds of the filmmakers and less discriminating fans of this stuff (of which I'm sure there will be many), but the attempts at intellectual provocation were frustratingly weak considering the marathon effort put into beating the audience into submission right along with their lead actress in preparation for the big "revelation". And you know Laugier and company were trying hard to make you think they had a really deep point, albeit one Laugier himself couldn't explain at the Q&A  . Could've been something much more interesting, but at least it delivers the gore, if that's still a raison d'etre after all these years.
I believe this was a Canadian co-production (we're so proud of it it never played theatres), which might explain the deluxe edition supposedly being released up here. |
Re: Martyrs (R1)---04/28/09
I agree that the less you know about it, the better...it's best to temper your expectations. Don't read into the hype, and you might enjoy it more. I ruined it for myself, and instead of going with it, I picked apart all its weaknesses.

That reminds me.... I need to subscribe. It's hit or miss catching it at the bookstore.
The Borders I go to has always been on point for getting in all their horror mags on time (especially Rue Morgue). But for some reason haven't gotten an issue of Rue Morgue since the one with the My Bloody Valentine feature. |

Re: Martyrs (R1)---04/28/09
Looks like Canada will be getting Martyrs a month before the States.
http://www.amazon.ca/Martyrs/dp/B001...7433282&sr=8-3 Haven't found any specs yet for that particular release though. |
