wow! Cameron's review is up http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/37123/martyrs-unrated/ and while i respect the review i just think he missed the point.
this is a movie that stays with you as it has me since watching it over the weekend. it festers and gets under the skin and is so much more than your Saws or Hostels.
yes, there are two parts, but they are equally compelling when you stop and realize what the 1st shock half has to do with the 2nd. just missed the point of the movie i think, but no disrespect.
it is and will be a very ploarizing movie and easy to understand how you can not like a movie like this. and i do agree that the use of the definition of "martyr" wasn't anything beguiling to me.

Remember that Laugier has publicly said he has no problem with the "torture-porn" label, and he loved Hostel and wanted to make a similar-themed movie.

Last year, there was a pretty good discussion going about the movie on a review over at Twitchfilm which you can find here:

I personally hate the term

Also apparently Pascal Laugier said a Martyrs remake is already being planned.

In a New York magazine article by film critic David Edelstein entitled "Now Playing at Your Local Multiplex: Torture Porn", the term “torture porn” was first coined.

Oh, and count me in as another who hates that term. Obviously these people have never seen torture. Or porn.

Yeah, I already heard about the remake. I wish I could say I'm surprised by it, but I'm not that naive. I'm going to wait for the remake of the remake with Blake Lively in the lead role. Which I'm guessing would come out after Jaume Balagueró's possible remake of "Inside".

I found it interesting that Whole Foods shelves have been labeled "produce porn" due to the glistening, colorful, perfectly shaped appearances of their items. I cry horseshit, but still found it funny.

Word of warning if you plan on subscribing to RM. The mags are often late and sometimes you get double issues. That doesn't sound like a bad thing, but unless you email them and inform them the double issue counts towards your subscription. Other than that it sure beats going to the store and trying to find it. Great mag.
Any word if the Uk Blu ray is region free?

I love horror mags...I always auction mine on ebay for a dollar.

I'd rather sit through Martyrs skinless awaiting death than sit through either Funny Games while sitting next to Megan Fox with her hand in my pants. That's how boring those films were.

The guy who works our store is fantastic and gets pretty much 98% of stock out soon after we receive them (and we receive A LOT at one time). Oddly enough we tend to get issues of Rue Morgue a little earlier than Fangoria most of the time.

I have the UNRATED version, and the slipcase is the two girls. The artwork underneath is someone peering from behind a bathtub. The word unrated is featured on both artworks.

I posted how I felt about the film in the "disturbing films" thread already, but I really cannot express how much I disagree with Cameron's dvdtalk review, especially coming from a fellow fan of horror, and more specifically, a fan of intellectual avant-garde horror like Funny Games.
The film's concept and divided-act approach was undeniably original to me, the photography was pitch-perfect, the acting certainly did not lack, the violence was unsettlingly stomach-turning and brilliantly conceived, and it truly left so much for the viewer to question without coming off as art-*** ambiguous or metaphysically impossible (High Tension: I'm looking at YOU).
I had no problem with the Webster definition of the film's title, as it gave an inch of closure to the point of the torture centralized in the film.
Brilliant! I felt inredibly pleased to see such tasteful, smarty-pants horror films such as Martyrs, Let the Right One In, The Descent, The Orphanage, Shadow of the Vampire, 28 Days Later, and Audition to grace this decade. With Martyrs though, you receive the added bonus of sitting through some challenging as hell scenes of brutality.

If it's open YMMV, as sometimes retail stores will make exceptions based on whatever Manager/Supervisor is on duty.

Re: Martyrs (R1)---04/28/09
no site even lists an 'R' rated version and IMDb doesn't even have an alternate version listing. anyone know what the differences are?
what i am going to do is print the only 2 listings Walmart has on website. both say Unrated in description and picture and use that to hopefully plead my case.
if not perhaps i can get them to order the Unrated version as "site to store" is an option for the UR and then exchange.
if i can't do either i would sell it $12.00 shipped to any takers...
what do ya think?

Walmart is very YMMV compared to other retailers, in a good way though. I've seen various stores take some very questionable returns back.
Good luck getting your exchange though. Not sure if anyone here would bite on the cut version of the film though
I think it was well known that there was an alternate cut of the film being released to certain stores (Blockbuster, Walmart) but like you I hadn't seen any comparisons of the cuts.

Thanks a lot for the offer Giles, but problem solved.
And this is where I solved my problem. I went and bought a different copy at Walmart, removed the slipcase and returned it. Is this wrong? At least their copy had the same artwork on both, so no ones missing out on anything....right? Plus most of them get all smashed from the way they are stored behind those metal things...I had to grab one from the back that wasn't already tore up.
I didn't even notice that it didn't say "Unrated" on the copy until I read Scott's post. So that's even better bc I hate those labels on the artwork.
