Sounds interesting. This is one of my favorites, so if the new edition proves worthy I'll gladly double dip.

tylergfoster 08-30-08 07:05 PM

Blu-Ray, Blu-Ray, Blu-Ray.

Hopefully it has some good new features.

Damn. I wish too. I am already Double Dipping on Touch Of Evil even though there isn't a Blu release. Don't think I can do it for the Hitchcocks coming out too even though I sold off my old set expecting an HD DVD release. Jokes on me!

Wish the studios would get with it.

Kerborus 08-31-08 09:03 PM

Crap. Spine numbers. I am powerless against their charms...

PopcornTreeCt 08-31-08 09:22 PM

"Centennial" Collection

Does that mean there will be 100 spine numbers?

islandclaws 09-01-08 10:41 AM

"Spine numbers".

Two of the most dreaded words an OCD collector can hear.

wakwak007 09-01-08 06:29 PM

This is another classic I have been meaning to get. I saw it for the first time last November and loved it. End of the year is starting to look rather costly.

Well, Paramount's 100th anniversary is in 2012. Maybe they'll get to 100 by then.

Count me in as one whose current edition is good enough until the BD is released.

rexinnih 09-02-08 07:27 AM

Love this movie but might also wait for a BD release. I'll wait for specs first before making a decision.

NoirFan 09-03-08 02:31 PM

Pre-orders for Sabrina and Roman Holiday are $16.99 each from Amazon.

beebs 09-03-08 03:48 PM

I'm sorry, I'm responsible for these. I recently broke down and purchased all three of these titles. Since I was apparently the last hold out, that triggered the cogs of industry to churn out new editions immediately.

That "Paramount in the 50's" featurette sounds interesting. These extras look good enough for me to safely double dip.

RobCA 09-05-08 02:16 PM

Impressive list of extras for Sunset Boulevard. Still not sure if I'm going to double dip, but it looks like the decision will be tougher than I thought.

Paramount in the 50's is currently available on many Paramount DVDs of movies friom the fifties including the current Sunset Blvd, Sabrina, and Funny Face.
Really just a promo for the DVDs.

Sunset Blvd was restored for the current DVD release. Scanned onto a computer and then converted back to film. They showed the restored film at MOMA prior to the DVD release. I doubt it will look any better in another SD release. Double dip only if you can't live without the extras.

And that goddamn Edith Head featurette is on seemingly every Paramount dvd I own!

Words can't express how all over this I am.

PopcornTreeCt 09-05-08 08:03 PM

I guess I'll be double dipping. One of my all-time favorite films.

alfonsosoriano 09-05-08 09:15 PM

I'm in for a second go around on Sunset Blvd.

NoirFan 09-05-08 09:24 PM

Looks like about an hour and a half of new supplemental material on Sunset Blvd, though it appears the "The Making of Sunset Boulevard" featurette from the previous disc is missing. I'm sure it has been rendered redundant by the newer material however. I'm curious to see how much improvement has been made in the transfer department - the 2002 edition was a real beauty.

I never thought I'd live to see the day when a guy complained about too much Head.

I guess I should pay closer attention to the extras on my DVDs considering I already own Sunset Blvd. I'll probably wait for a review on the new bonus materials/transfer before commiting to buying this.

I hope you're right about that, but that "Making Of" featurette on the current DVD is actually very good, especially the clips from a recent interview with Nancy Olsen. I'd hate to be without it, so I might have to keep the present DVD as well.

Drexl 09-08-08 09:50 AM

It's possible, however, that the material in the featurette on the previous disc was re-edited and included here. Perhaps that one called "The Beginning" is it, but with part of it edited into another featurette.

slop101 09-08-08 10:18 AM

Any info on if they'd improve the video quality for this new version (not that the previous edition had a bad transfer or anything)?

marty888 09-08-08 11:22 AM

I keep thinking <i>"no.... no .... no"</i> but I'm sure the first time there's one of our favorite semi-annual sales, I'll be saying <i>"yes ... yes .... yes"</i> to <b>SUNSET BOULEVARD</b>.

That Asian perspective doc is an interesting addition. Could a mod please re-title this thread "The Official Paramount Centennial Collection thread", since this looks to be an ongoing series of titles? Thanks.

Fingers crossed for The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, Hud, Miracle at Morgan's Creek or *NASHVILLE* somewhere down the line.

I'll add Detective Story, Elephant Man, Harold and Maude, Rosemary's Baby and Shane to that wish list.

While I don't think Elephant Man will be included (due to the SE being released in the David Lynch Lime Green Box), I'll take that list and add The African Queen to it.

I just bought Funny Face. Grr.. Happy to see Breakfast at Tiffany's is getting a new edition.

I know what you mean, since I have Sunset Blvd. already. I'm lucky that so far, I don't have to double dip on the other titles.

I was hoping for a new commentary this time around, as the previous one was extremely disappointing. Octogenarian producer Richard Shepherd reminded me of Abe Simpson, at one point musing "Sing Sing is a funny name for a prison, isn't it? Some prisons have funny names." That was about as insightful as it got.
