Re: The Official Paramount Centennial Collection Thread
I never double-dipped on To Catch a Thief the last time, and I admit I rolled my eyes when I saw they were releasing it again, but those screencaps look like a definite improvement. I think it's finally time to do it.

In for The Odd Couple, my favorite comedy of all time. That siblings commentary track should be... interesting.

Re: The Official Paramount Centennial Collection Thread
How is the new Odd Couple dvd? I have the old version which last i checked, besides a few specks here and there, it was perfectly fine

Re: The Official Paramount Centennial Collection Thread
With the release of the new wave yesterday, I think there should be another announcement soon.
Even if Stalag 17, It's a Wonderful Life, and Once Upon a Time in the West have been done several times before, if they are released again under this banner with improved transfers and more features, I don't think I'll be able to resist. Also looking forward to first time releases of Wings and The African Queen. |

DVD Beaver on The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance

Re: The Official Paramount Centennial Collection Thread
Universal Pictures should be doing a Paramount Centennial collection of its own, since they own the rights to all the pre-'48 Paramount titles, including the early Marx Bros., Mae West, W.C. Fields, Hope, Crosby, Hope and Crosby, Betty Hutton, Ernst Lubitsch, Mitchell Leisen, early Billy Wilder, Preston Sturges, THIS GUN FOR HIRE, Alan Ladd, etc., etc., etc.
The stuff cited in the OP starts at 1950, leaving out 38 significant years of Paramount's history. |

The film has recently been restored...
Restored ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST Screens across North America After premiering at the Rome Film Festival in 2007, the restored Sergio Leone classic, ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST (1968), celebrated its North American debut with several screenings across the continent. The film had its American premiere at a gala screening at the Miami International Film Festival on March 2nd, as part of the Preservation Screening Program presented by The Film Foundation and American Express. It next opened in New York City as part of the Tribeca Film Festival in association with the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) on April 30th. This was followed by a successful week-long engagement at MoMA from May 1st - 5th. The film then made its way to the West Coast for a premiere at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, on Friday, June 20th. The film premiered in Canada at the Calgary International Film Festival on Sunday, September 21st, as part of the Preservation Screening Program presented by The Film Foundation and American Express. All of the screenings featured an introductory presentation on the restoration process by Barry Allen, Executive Director of Film Preservation and Archival Resources at Paramount Pictures. The restoration of ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST was made possible with support by The Film Foundation and The Rome Film Festival in association with Sergio Leone Productions and Paramount Pictures. |

I would too. One of the great westerns, without a doubt. I don't have enough superlatives for this film, quite possibly Leone's best (and that's saying a lot).

Now this is truly unexpected news! From classic flix:
No line on price or bonus features, but Paramount has scheduled an October 13th release date for The African Queen as part of their Paramount Centennial Collection series. Stay tuned for more details... |

Nice! I've never seen The African Queen but I've heard so much about it, and I love Bogie, that it's a definite buy for me.
Paramount really needs to start issuing these on Blu day-and-date, though. I just got my review copies of El Dorado and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. Both look awesome. Can't wait to dive in! |

Re: The Official Paramount Centennial Collection Thread
6/25/09 Here's some news we think is pretty exciting: We've confirmed with our sources that Paramount is - at long last - finally preparing The African Queen: Centennial Collection with a tentative street date of 10/13 (date subject to change). [Editor's Note: We had direct confirmation on the record from the studio earlier this year that they were working on the transfer, but this is the first word we've had of the final release.] We believe this is currently a DVD only release, but a Blu-ray could still be planned for later in the year or next year. Also coming are new Centennial Collection DVD editions of Chinatown and Sorry, Wrong Number. We're told at least Chinatown is planned for Blu-ray release in 2010. Meanwhile, though it hasn't yet been announced, we're told once again that It's a Wonderful Life is tentatively planned for release on Blu-ray in November (the title is already available on DVD). |

Re: The Official Paramount Centennial Collection Thread
Picked up Liberty Valance and El Dorado at BJs for 11.99. They had the other titles as well.
|
Re: The Official Paramount Centennial Collection Thread
put Chinatown on blu ray and I'll convert :)
|
Re: The Official Paramount Centennial Collection Thread
Seems I'll be double-dipping on Chinatown.
|
Re: The Official Paramount Centennial Collection Thread
I watched To Catch a Thief. The image quality is incredible. The extras are also very good.
I was so impressed that I ordered the rest of the colection. |
Re: The Official Paramount Centennial Collection Thread
I've been picking up each one of the Centennial Collection titles as they come out as well.
...and welcome to DVD Talk, Puella63!!! |
Re: The Official Paramount Centennial Collection Thread
What I have to say about It's a Wonderful Life is if the BD is coming out, maybe they'll get it right this time and add special features. Though I fear this won't happen.

Re: The Official Paramount Centennial Collection Thread
Frankly, I just want them to do the picture right and lay off the DNR and EE. Extra features are just gravy.

I don't even know if I'd blame Paramount, as it seems all of the Frank Capra titles have been re-released over the years with the same exact contents. (ie. "It Happened One Night"). At best, the picture quality might be improved with each new release, but the bonus features have remained the same. Don't get me wrong, I'd be glad to double-dip if they re-release "It's A Wonderful Life" as part of the 2-disc Centennial Collection with actual new bonus features, but I grow more doubtful each year that any of the Capra titles will ever be re-released with more content than currently exists. |
Re: The Official Paramount Centennial Collection Thread
Because It's a Wonderful Life wasn't made for Paramount, it doesn't really fit as a Centennial Collection release. It might still happen, but if the idea, as it seems to be, is for Paramount to honor the studio's history then having a film made for Republic would be somewhat inappropriate.

Re: The Official Paramount Centennial Collection Thread
That's possible, but The African Queen isn't a Paramount film and it's being released under the banner.

Re: The Official Paramount Centennial Collection Thread
From DVD Times:
Paramount Home Entertainment have announced the Region 1 DVD release of Chinatown (Centennial Collection) on 6th October 2009. A landmark movie in the film noir tradition, Roman Polanski's Chinatown stars Jack Nicholson as private eye Jake Gittes. Hired by a beautiful socialite (Faye Dunaway) to investigate her husband's extra-marital affair, Gittes is swept into a maelstrom of double dealings and deadly deceits, uncovering a web of personal and political scandals that come crashing together for one, unforgettable night in...Chinatown. Features include: * English Mono (Restored) & DD5.1 * French, Portuguese and Spanish Mono * English, French, Portuguese and Spanish subtitles * Featurette: “Chinatown: An Appreciation” * Featurette: “WATER AND POWER” * Audio Commentary by writer Robert Towne with special guest David Fincher The list of extras may not be final. I'll hold off for the Blu-ray in 2010, but that commentary sounds great. |
Re: The Official Paramount Centennial Collection Thread
God dammit, this looks awesome. It might get me to start buying the Centennial Collection Movies. Spine numbers = brilliant marketing.
