What do you mean? This cover looks to be in the same classy design that the others are.

I realized I made a "boo-boo" in my last post.

I should has asked: "So does anyone have a clue as to why Paramount ditched those classy cardboard slipcovers for Chinatown and just left it with the standard cover?"

Just got my copy of Chinatown from wherehouse.com and it also didn't come with a slipcover.

Just bought the older editions of Liberty Valance and El Dorado too.

Oh well. At least they were cheap.

In the 1980's Paramount released VHS titles from their
silent era period.

These included Running Wild with W.C. Fields as well as
classics Wings and The Covered Wagon.

Most of Paramount's silent era output has vanished;
victims of studio fires and willful neglect.

Movies thought lost have turned up since the VHS
releases.

Beyond The Rocks with Gloria Swanson and Rudolph
Valentino is an example.

At least Wings should be given a release in the
Centennial Collection if they decide to ditch
the rest of the silent era.

But remember that most of pre-1950 Paramount titles were sold off to Universal.

Paramount still owns their silent output. I'm pretty sure Criterion has confirmed that they are releasing several silent titles licensed from them.

These two images lead me to believe that the first image was the outer slipcover and the second image was the cover on the DVD case itself. That's 100% not the case, and they decided to release this without a slipcover? For continuity's sake, that's ridiculous, and I'm not even a guy who likes slipcovers that much.

so you can definitely confirm that the retail version in stores does not come with a sleeve!?

I've only seen it in one store and it did not have a slip cover.

When I picked up my copy of Chinatown there were 2 copies and neither had the slipcover. I had mine laid out by spine number and it looks weird now.

Which cover does it have then? The one that matches the slipcover, or the one that matches the normal DVD cover?

But honestly, it disappoints me that it doesn't have the slipcover like the other ones do, but if they are going to keep putting things out under this banner and keep the prices as low as they've been, I won't get too upset.

That's really weird. Especially since it has been advertised everywhere with the other picture. Hmmm...

That's a shame. Granted, the disc content is what's most important, but I liked the sort-of classy feel that the slipcovers gave the releases.

Also, not to bring this up again, but who else is upset that the release of The African Queen didn't come to pass yet again?

I'm disappointed about the African Queen, but I am glad that I didn't dump my Castaways dvd of it when it was announced. Even though it's a Chinese bootleg.

I'm disappointed that this line's release rate seems to have dropped off after starting with such promise. They put out about two titles every couple of months, from November to May, then a sudden 5-month hiatus just to bring us only one title and hint at three others. The Centennial Collection had such great potential, I just hope Paramount didn't lose interest in it this quickly.

My DVD arrived 2 days ago. I bought it from Amazon.
I was really upset because it didn't have the cover. Now those spine numbers don't look so good anymore. I have 9 goodlooking boxes and one boring DVD case.

I don't know about them, but I have. Normally, I couldn't care less about slipcovers; I usually throw them away. But in this case, no slipcover = no sale.

I know that the retail prices dropped not too long after they started (the MSRP was originally about $24.99, they dropped rather quickly down to $16.99, and that's not taking into account various sales that other places have had for them; Target's $7.50 pricing for Breakfast At Tiffany's and Funny Face, for example), so it's not entirely out of the question.

It also brings to question the future of these films on Blu. I know that it was said that Chinatown would be coming next year, but if this version doesn't sell, it's possible that plans for that could be out...

"Sorry, Wrong Number", "The African Queen", and "Wings". All mentioned in relation to the Centennial line at some point.

edit: #102 in this thread has a digitalbits.com link stating intentions for the first two. "Wings" may have only been speculation within this thread, though I'd swear I read something about a planned DVD release somewhere on this board.

I was in my local Wal-Mart on October 16th.

They had the Centennial Collection editions of "Sunset Boulevard", "Roman Holiday" and I believe the above version of "Chinatown". I bought the first two.

They might have had other titles, but I'm not very familiar with the Centennial Collection.
