Re: The Official Paramount Centennial Collection Thread

Here's some news we think is pretty exciting: We've confirmed with our sources that Paramount is - at long last - finally preparing The African Queen: Centennial Collection with a tentative street date of 10/13 (date subject to change). [Editor's Note: We had direct confirmation on the record from the studio earlier this year that they were working on the transfer, but this is the first word we've had of the final release.] We believe this is currently a DVD only release, but a Blu-ray could still be planned for later in the year or next year. Also coming are new Centennial Collection DVD editions of Chinatown and Sorry, Wrong Number. We're told at least Chinatown is planned for Blu-ray release in 2010. Meanwhile, though it hasn't yet been announced, we're told once again that It's a Wonderful Life is tentatively planned for release on Blu-ray in November (the title is already available on DVD).

I should have known better than to have picked up the SE of Chinatown, excellent film it may be. I'm in for the Blu...

Picked up Liberty Valance and El Dorado at BJs for 11.99. They had the other titles as well.

I watched To Catch a Thief. The image quality is incredible. The extras are also very good.
I was so impressed that I ordered the rest of the colection.

What I have to say about It's a Wonderful Life is if the BD is coming out, maybe they'll get it right this time and add special features. Though I fear this won't happen.

I'm sure it will be packed with special features - It's a Wonderful Life is one of Paramount's signature titles and one of the most beloved films of all time.

Frankly, I just want them to do the picture right and lay off the DNR and EE. Extra features are just gravy.

And yet, it's been more or less the same package each time they've re-released the film. The earleist copy I remember was a flipper disc with the bonus features on Side B. Then came the single-sided disc with all materials on one side. Then came the 2-disc which added only a bonus colorized version.

I don't even know if I'd blame Paramount, as it seems all of the Frank Capra titles have been re-released over the years with the same exact contents. (ie. "It Happened One Night"). At best, the picture quality might be improved with each new release, but the bonus features have remained the same.

Don't get me wrong, I'd be glad to double-dip if they re-release "It's A Wonderful Life" as part of the 2-disc Centennial Collection with actual new bonus features, but I grow more doubtful each year that any of the Capra titles will ever be re-released with more content than currently exists.

Re: The Official Paramount Centennial Collection Thread

Because It's a Wonderful Life wasn't made for Paramount, it doesn't really fit as a Centennial Collection release. It might still happen, but if the idea, as it seems to be, is for Paramount to honor the studio's history then having a film made for Republic would be somewhat inappropriate.

Re: The Official Paramount Centennial Collection Thread

That's possible, but The African Queen isn't a Paramount film and it's being released under the banner.

Yeah, especially since Frank Capra Jr. is gone.

It was, but it's on again (as of June 26th, per the thread about TAQ).

Re: The Official Paramount Centennial Collection Thread

From DVD Times:
Paramount Home Entertainment have announced the Region 1 DVD release of Chinatown (Centennial Collection) on 6th October 2009. A landmark movie in the film noir tradition, Roman Polanski's Chinatown stars Jack Nicholson as private eye Jake Gittes. Hired by a beautiful socialite (Faye Dunaway) to investigate her husband's extra-marital affair, Gittes is swept into a maelstrom of double dealings and deadly deceits, uncovering a web of personal and political scandals that come crashing together for one, unforgettable night in...Chinatown.

Features include:

* English Mono (Restored) & DD5.1
* French, Portuguese and Spanish Mono
* English, French, Portuguese and Spanish subtitles
* Featurette: “Chinatown: An Appreciation”
* Featurette: “WATER AND POWER”
* Audio Commentary by writer Robert Towne with special guest David Fincher

The list of extras may not be final.

I'll hold off for the Blu-ray in 2010, but that commentary sounds great.

God dammit, this looks awesome. It might get me to start buying the Centennial Collection Movies. Spine numbers = brilliant marketing.

Re: The Official Paramount Centennial Collection Thread

Seen a few of these at my local Target this pass week for $7.50 each.
So YMMV

Funny Face and Breakfast at Tiffany's (Paramount Centennial ) are the only two in store.

At Target.com these are the only 2 listed at this price too,the others are $13+.

Re: The Official Paramount Centennial Collection Thread

I picked up Breakfast At Tiffany's yesterday for $7.50 at Target as the above user mentioned. I really hope the post about Wings and The African Queen are true. I'm trying to get all the Best Picture Winners as well as both AFI lists and those are a couple of tough ones to locate.

Re: The Official Paramount Centennial Collection Thread

So does anyone have a clue as to why Paramount ditched those classy looking cases for Chinatown and just left it with the standard cover?
