Re: The Official Paramount Centennial Collection Thread
Seen a few of these at my local Target this pass week for $7.50 each.
So YMMV Funny Face and Breakfast at Tiffany's (Paramount Centennial ) are the only two in store. At Target.com these are the only 2 listed at this price too,the others are $13+. |
Re: The Official Paramount Centennial Collection Thread
I picked up Breakfast At Tiffany's yesterday for $7.50 at Target as the above user mentioned. I really hope the post about Wings and The African Queen are true. I'm trying to get all the Best Picture Winners as well as both AFI lists and those are a couple of tough ones to locate.

Re: The Official Paramount Centennial Collection Thread
Maybe Polanski's arrest was marketing for the new Chinatown dvd...
|
Re: The Official Paramount Centennial Collection Thread
Ooh - an insert in a non-Criterion dvd - I miss those...
|
Re: The Official Paramount Centennial Collection Thread
So does anyone have a clue as to why Paramount ditched those classy looking cases for Chinatown and just left it with the standard cover?
|
Re: The Official Paramount Centennial Collection Thread
What do you mean? This cover looks to be in the same classy design that the others are.

I should has asked: "So does anyone have a clue as to why Paramount ditched those classy cardboard slipcovers for Chinatown and just left it with the standard cover?" |
Re: The Official Paramount Centennial Collection Thread
Just got my copy of Chinatown from wherehouse.com and it also didn't come with a slipcover.
|
Re: The Official Paramount Centennial Collection Thread
Just bought the older editions of Liberty Valance and El Dorado too.
Oh well. At least they were cheap. |
Re: The Official Paramount Centennial Collection Thread
In the 1980's Paramount released VHS titles from their
silent era period. These included Running Wild with W.C. Fields as well as classics Wings and The Covered Wagon. Most of Paramount's silent era output has vanished; victims of studio fires and willful neglect. Movies thought lost have turned up since the VHS releases. Beyond The Rocks with Gloria Swanson and Rudolph Valentino is an example. At least Wings should be given a release in the Centennial Collection if they decide to ditch the rest of the silent era. |

But remember that most of pre-1950 Paramount titles were sold off to Universal. |
Re: The Official Paramount Centennial Collection Thread
Paramount still owns their silent output. I'm pretty sure Criterion has confirmed that they are releasing several silent titles licensed from them.

Re: The Official Paramount Centennial Collection Thread
These two images lead me to believe that the first image was the outer slipcover and the second image was the cover on the DVD case itself. That's 100% not the case, and they decided to release this without a slipcover? For continuity's sake, that's ridiculous, and I'm not even a guy who likes slipcovers that much.

Re: The Official Paramount Centennial Collection Thread
Scored Roman Holiday from Wal-Mart for $3.

Re: The Official Paramount Centennial Collection Thread
I've only seen it in one store and it did not have a slip cover.
|
Re: The Official Paramount Centennial Collection Thread
When I picked up my copy of Chinatown there were 2 copies and neither had the slipcover. I had mine laid out by spine number and it looks weird now.
|
Re: The Official Paramount Centennial Collection Thread
Which cover does it have then? The one that matches the slipcover, or the one that matches the normal DVD cover?
P.S. Fuck you, Paramount. |
Re: The Official Paramount Centennial Collection Thread
The normal dvd cover. It's the 2nd picture from post 133.
But honestly, it disappoints me that it doesn't have the slipcover like the other ones do, but if they are going to keep putting things out under this banner and keep the prices as low as they've been, I won't get too upset. |
Re: The Official Paramount Centennial Collection Thread
That's really weird. Especially since it has been advertised everywhere with the other picture. Hmmm...

Also, not to bring this up again, but who else is upset that the release of The African Queen didn't come to pass yet again? |
Re: The Official Paramount Centennial Collection Thread
I'm disappointed about the African Queen, but I am glad that I didn't dump my Castaways dvd of it when it was announced. Even though it's a Chinese bootleg.

That's a shame. Granted, the disc content is what's most important, but I liked the sort-of classy feel that the slipcovers gave the releases.

Re: The Official Paramount Centennial Collection Thread
Wasn't "Sorry, Wrong Number" supposed to be in the same wave with "Chinatown", as well?
I'm disappointed that this line's release rate seems to have dropped off after starting with such promise. They put out about two titles every couple of months, from November to May, then a sudden 5-month hiatus just to bring us only one title and hint at three others. The Centennial Collection had such great potential, I just hope Paramount didn't lose interest in it this quickly. |

I was really upset because it didn't have the cover. Now those spine numbers don't look so good anymore. I have 9 goodlooking boxes and one boring DVD case. |

It also brings to question the future of these films on Blu. I know that it was said that Chinatown would be coming next year, but if this version doesn't sell, it's possible that plans for that could be out... |

edit: #102 in this thread has a digitalbits.com link stating intentions for the first two. "Wings" may have only been speculation within this thread, though I'd swear I read something about a planned DVD release somewhere on this board. |
Re: The Official Paramount Centennial Collection Thread
I was in my local Wal-Mart on October 16th.
They had the Centennial Collection editions of "Sunset Boulevard", "Roman Holiday" and I believe the above version of "Chinatown". I bought the first two. Price? $3 :) They might have had other titles, but I'm not very familiar with the Centennial Collection. |

I take it these didn't sell so well. Bummer.

Re: The Official Paramount Centennial Collection Thread
I'm sure many collectors, myself included, may have held off on some/all of these titles because we were waiting for them to be announced on Blu. From the beginning, Paramount should have made this an exclusive line for classic BD titles. I'm sure there aren't too many people who are fans of Sunset Blvd., Breakfast at Tiffany's or Chinatown that don't already on it on DVD.
|
Re: The Official Paramount Centennial Collection Thread
So is this collection already done? I don't understand why they would start it and stop so soon. I'm disappointed about the slipcovers being eliminated also.....just looked classy for the classic films. So is there any hope for a Wings or African Queen release?

Re: The Official Paramount Centennial Collection Thread
I picked up The Odd Couple for $4 at Wally World. Didn't see any of the others. YMMV, as usual.

Re: The Official Paramount Centennial Collection Thread
Well DVDAF now lists Chinatown as OOP. Must be the end of this collection. Seems it ended before it really even started.

According to Amazon, as well: "This item has been discontinued by the manufacturer." Yet, they still have at least "Sunset Boulevard" available. Did they make fewer pressings of "Chinatown" in this collection than the other titles, anticipating their dwindling interest in continuing the line?
