They released the theatrical version to HD-DVD, so it seems reasonable for them to release the extended to Blu-ray.

I don't like the cover it looks like Kevin Costner is like an American indian.
Which makes it look like DANCES WITH WOLVES 2 .

Very much looking forward to this. I find Waterworld an enjoyable and unfairly bashed film. Not great obviously, but to me a more-than-decent timewaster. I've been curious about the extended version that has apparently been shown on TV from time to time, and a few years ago I was about to order a DVD of it recorded from TV, but decided not to at the last minute. Glad I held out.

As hated as this movie was, this being released gives me hope that there may one day be a release of a Director's Cut of another much hated Costner movie that I like even more than Waterworld: The Postman.

I didn't know about the TV extended cuts.. but in any case count me in. I consider myself a real film snob, but I've always thought this was an enjoyable and underrated film. An extended cut would be interesting to see.

It isn't really getting that good of a release. The only extra this will have is the extended cut and the theatrical trailer.

I want more extras. If they release blu-ray with the extended cut and several other extras (I'm sure there is some "making of" feature available somewhere)then I would definitely buy it. But for this DVD release, I will just be renting it.

I actually liked this film too. Apparently there are more of us out there than we want to admit!

Plus Jeanne Tripplehorn was sooooooooooo hot back in the day .... even though her backside is an ass double :P Why does someone insist on an ass double but will show her boobs in Basic instinct???

From the above review:
Universal didn't go out of their way to restore the movie for its DVD release, presenting the network television cut of the picture. Profanity has been dubbed over and a few special effect shots remain in their unfinished state, popping the bubble of fantasy to an unfortunate degree. It isn't a patch job like the famously reworked "Dune" extended cut, but it's far from ideal.
What a bullshit release! I was thinking of upgrading but I'll just hold onto my original copy.

Wow, so it is basically a workprint.

Well, that drops my price point for buying this down to about $5.

No go for me, even though I've been waiting for years to see it. Very disappointing! Can anyone in the know confirm whether this is just a bullshit release, or really the best this extended version will ever look?

Mmm. I'll get it if my Reward Zone coupon comes through. That's pretty stupid, though.

Based on the review, I'm unclear about the "network television cut." Is all profanity dubbed over, are other scenes edited for violence, etc? Or is it just the new footage?

Holy mackerel! They're really putting a profanity-dubbed-out TV version with a bad transfer? I was going to buy this but now I will not touch it with a 10 foot oar.

It's best to forget this whole Extended Cut version and pretend it never happened...

Profanity is gone.

Violence remains as far as I could tell - not really a graphic movie to begin with.

The only extra is the trailer??? WTF??? No commentary? No behind the scenes documentary? There is so much to talk about regarding this movie, I really want to see a well-produced retrospective documentary. Between no extras and the "network television cut", I wouldn't even spend $1 on this.

Thanks for the clarification. According to IMDB, "Rated PG-13 for some intense scenes of action violence, brief nudity and language." How much profanity is removed? I assume the "brief nudity" (I can't recall what it is in the original cut) is gone?

Edited to add what I found in the forums on IMDB: "One of the peculiar things I noticed about the so-called extended version is that while it does have additional footage (30 mins or so), it actually deleted some content from the original/current release. In the extended version, they remove much of the scene between Helen and the Mariner (she offers herself to him) shortly after escaping the atoll. Most unforgivable is that they delete the shots of Helen standing naked in front of the Mariner; that image of Jeanne Tripplehorn's 32- year old, naked, tanned body glimmering in the sun replete with an magnificently exquisite ass was pretty much the artistic high watermark (pun intended) of the whole movie."

^ Not that it really matters, but that was a body double for Tripplehorn's ass. I remember her in an interview saying that she got the final say in which double to use.

Not too "peculiar" editing nudity for TV.
