Yep, this movie started the Costner backlash from the media. I don't know if he announced his political views around this time too.

I remember taping the extended version off of ABC in '97 or '98, and thinking it was so cool. I probably won't pick this up, but it is cool of Universal to give us a reason to buy. Now if only Warner Bros. would do the same with The Avengers.

I'll jump in here and say that this film gets a tremendously bad rap.

1. It isn't just a guilty pleasure, it's legitimately good
2. It was not a bomb, it was a troubled production that went tremendously over budget. Some movies that exceed their budget end up being awful, or compromised, or the dollars didn't end up on the screen so they look cheap. Waterworld looks every bit as expensive as it was, which is commendable. The film made a profit, it's programed on television constantly, and gets repeated DVD releases like this one. It may have been popular to bash, or criticize, or joke about, but it has proven itself to have legs.
3. The film has many similarities to the Road Warrior films. I don't understand why a stinker like Thunder Dome gets to be paraded around like it's a great film when Waterworld is way better.

Also, it's a very unique film. In an already slim subgenre of post-apocalyptic films, this was a very original idea, and executed beautifully.

Yeah..what's wrong with the Aristocats? Pretty good cartoon if ya ask me. On topic, it's a guilty pleasure of mine as well, and will surely pick this one up. I wish they would bring over the DTS track, though...

Cut an hour out of the postman and it would be a fun and entertaining film as well. And before anyone posts, yes, I know this isn't the movie forum.

.. the movie forum.
Good point, I smell a Costner poll just around the corner on this one.

As for the DVD release, aside from the original DTS release (which I believe is fullbit), I never got around to it. Sure, the film had it's flaws, but it was a unique concept with a few damn cool set pieces. Yeah, I'll sign up for that price point.

I saw this in the theatre when it came out, in spite of all the bad press, and found it to be quite an entertaining movie at the time. I wonder if this is Reynolds' cut, or just the addition of tv footage.

The TV cut I'd imagine, since the running time is the same

If it was Reynolds' cut, I'd imagine they'd label it as a Director's Cut rather than just extended.

I don't know the running time, but I had to split it on two T120 VHS tapes. I haven't watched it since it aired, though.

This is great news.

However, it´s ironic as a fan (McFly) has just released a superior Extended Cut a few weeks ago made from various television broadcasts.

Hmm, he was donating money to Phil Gramm in early 95, but by late 95 he was donating to Barry Gordon and went on to donate to Tom Daschle, Al Gore and John Kerry. So maybe the media's criticism of Waterworld convinced him to change his political views.

Clearly he's been brainwashed over to the left, so I'm sure all his movies are getting excellent reviews now.

Worth a watch at least. A guilty pleasure I haven't seen in awhile.

That's what I thought. Did Pluto Nash do that good? Obviously not.

I thought it was a good movie. Not great but better then most of the 'extended cut' productions. Sin City anyone?????

I want to see it, but I'll probably just rent it. Don't think I'll revisit it much.

I'm actually pretty excited about this release.

I never saw the TV extended cut, so this will be my first time seeing the cut.

And I have always enjoyed the theatrical cut. Granted the last time I saw this was in VHS (I don't know how this movie would have aged) But I always thought this was a fun, entertaining movie.

Will buy the Blu-ray when it comes out.

I'll admit that this is a film I haven't seen in years, but it wasn't entirely terrible when I saw it in theaters. For the right price I might be willing to pick this up. I always liked the concept.

I always thought this film was entertaining and my mother loves it. I'll probably pick it up for her for Christmas.

I don't understand all of the hate for this movie. It's not one of Costner's best movies but it definitely is not the worst either.

I'm looking forward to the extended cut.

I thought the real cause of the backlash was when he left his wife.

I was lobbying Universal for an extended cut back in the laserdisc days. The reps reaction was a pause, then "hmmm.... interesting...."
