2. It was not a bomb, it was a troubled production that went tremendously over budget. Some movies that exceed their budget end up being awful, or compromised, or the dollars didn't end up on the screen so they look cheap. Waterworld looks every bit as expensive as it was, which is commendable. The film made a profit, it's programed on television constantly, and gets repeated DVD releases like this one. It may have been popular to bash, or criticize, or joke about, but it has proven itself to have legs.
3. The film has many similarities to the Road Warrior films. I don't understand why a stinker like Thunder Dome gets to be paraded around like it's a great film when Waterworld is way better.
1. that is your opinion. a movie that has 39% fresh rating is not legitimately good. and that was back when the tomatometer was just a plumb.

2. this movie got all the bomb discussion it deserved. when domestic gross is $88 mil and budget is $175, that does not a successful movie make at the time. maybe it has grossed more foreign and put it over the top, but you know that a US produced movie that severly underperforms in its own market during initial release is by all rights considered a bomb.

definition: The phrase box office bomb refers to a film for which the production and marketing costs greatly exceeded the revenue retained by the movie studio. This should not be confused with instances when official figures show large losses, yet the movie is a financial success; see Hollywood accounting.

A film's financial success is often measured by its gross revenue. Studios expect that a film's "domestic" (which the American film industry defines as the United States and Canada, and the British film industry defines as the United Kingdom, and the French film industry defines as France) box office gross revenue will exceed production costs.[citation needed] This does not make the film profitable: typically, the exhibiting theater keeps 45%[citation needed] of the gross, with the remainder paid to the studio as the rental fee. However, if a film has a higher domestic gross than its production and marketing costs, it will almost certainly turn a profit once the overseas gross is included

So? Who cares? It was a greatly fun movie, in my opinion.

There's a lot crappier movies that got the extended cut so what's the big deal about Waterworld having it?

If you are not interested in this DVD, don't buy it and case closed.

If it helps it, cool. If not, oh well.

Don't buy it.

Here are some shots from the Extended cut:

The infamous water-tub ball pods

A climactic shot of land from a different perspective

The fancy water city that they deleted in the original theatrical cut:

The infamous conversation between Costner and Hopper that was cut from theatrical version

I remember seeing this in theaters at the time and enjoyed it then. I haven't seen it much since then. I think I may have seen it on a VHS rental after that, or some tv showings of the theatrical cut.

Great news. Blu Ray extended edition would be even better.

Same. This is a guilty pleasure of mine... hey, if anything it's held up better than Robin Hood:POT.

I always liked this movie. Sure it's stupid (every character is covered with dirt and grime in a world that is ALL WATER just to name a single point), but I'll be picking it up.

I haven't seen this in a long time, I probably wouldn't remember half of it but judging the responses in this thread I would not call this a bad movie. Seems they just spent too much money and it was not as great of a success they hoped for.. it happens.

FINALLY!!! I remember seeing some of the extra footage (the recycled pee, the everest plaque) on tv and was always upset they never put it out. I seriously dont think it was 41 or so minutes of extra stuff. I'm very excited to check this out...

I don't even think it's that they spent that much money. From what I recall, one of the giant sets they built on the ocean sank. So either they spend a ton to excavate it or build a new one. That's where the majority of the extra millions went.

That's actually a nice cover. If it's on sale for $14.99, which it probably will, I will probably pick this up.

the same reason why the extended cut of 'Brotherhood of the Wolf' or Warner's release of 'The New World' hasn't been announced for blu either, it's more than likely a niche title.
