David Lynch Box Set --> "The Lime Green Set": 11/18/08
#52
It's not the price I have a problem with as much as the fact that I own the majority of this collection already. The two DVDs I want (Elephant Man bonus disc and Industrial Symphony) don't warrant dropping the coinage to pick it up.
They need their own releases on these other titles in the set. Otherwise, in my book, it turns Lynch from a respected artist to a corporate shrill, as it reeks of the same type of crap big studios pull on complete series TV sets where they add bonus features just for that complete set. It takes a complete dump on the fans who supported the work as the individual releases came out.

Really that fast? He becomes a corporate shill just like that? What is this entitlement fans of anything have? David Lynch or any artist owes you nothing and they never will. There job is to create art, Lynch all ready created his art, that's were his involvement ends. He'll make more art whether or not he has fans. So, anything else is bonus, that's why it's called such. None of if is vital to the art created.
Besides that I'm sure Industrial Symphony will be available seperately, not sure about the mystery disc, but it will probably be available for rent from Netflix atleast.

If you want to call double dipping "art," you go right ahead.

I don't think people would be "ready to hang" anyone if it was a studio, seeing as the initial releases of these DVDs were years ago. If someone double dips with crappy new extras just to cash in on a sequel or new film, then that's shitty. If several years after the fact you create a nice box set. I'm game.

People don't get up in arms at music companies that repackage releases in box sets with added stuff. They don't cry "fraud" when a publishing company takes several books in a series, publishes them one at a time as written, and then rereleases them in box sets. And not one word is different or added.
But Lynch is ripping you off because he's repackaging some old stuff with some new stuff?
Some people live in very small worlds.

This is not priced as a budget item to introduce Lynch's work to the curious. This is an expensive deluxe editions clearly aimed at diehard fans.
The only reason to include the discs that have been available for years is to justify the excessive price. And the only reason to include the new stuff is as bait for the fan who already bought the old stuff.

And for the record, yes, I WOULD stop complaining if they were released separately.

Alright, let's break this one down...
If people complaining about the price are not serious Lynch fans, then what are they? Casual fans? I ask because I don't see why a "casual fan" would be complaining about having to pay ~$150 just to get an Elephant man bonus disc and a new sound mix for Blue Velvet. I imagine a "casual fan's" response would be "I already own all those movies, why would I buy that?" Or, the casual fan doesn't already own all of the previous releases and would be happy to pick up the set.
The "serious fan", on the other hand, would already own everything previously released and yet, being a "serious fan", would feel compelled to pick up this set to get the handful of exclusive items. Either they have money to spend on a set comprised mostly of stuff they already own, or they don't. Those who don't may be apt to complain about it.
On second thought though, you're probably right, those of us on a tight budget couldn't possibly be serious fans and certainly don't have opinions that matter. So please disregard this entire post.

I'm a serious Lynch fan and I seriously don't want to spend $150 on this set for some new bonus features and a new sound mix for a film he more than likely downgraded to a glorified 3.1 mix anyhow.
For the record I own EVERYTHING Lynch related on DVD, so I think I earn my stripes there.
Also for the record, I'll probably buy this during DD's sale since I'm am that big of a Lynch fan. I just think these should also be available individually for fans to pick and choose whatever they feel they need.

Info on the mystery disc, from here:
One of the things it has is 32 scenes never seen before from Wild at Heart. Partial scenes, extended scenes and complete scenes from a work print that was found, so it’s funky quality, but all of them have been edited as much as I could edit them with what was available and all of them have been mixed. Also on that disc is, I had a foot locker, and this foot locker hadn’t been opened, well it was opened I guess in ’86, and but it hadn’t been open since the ’60s. It has 16mm experiments I did in Philadelphia in the late ’60s. One of the things is a fictitious Anacin commercial. Do you know what Anacin is? Anacin is like Aspirin. I don’t know what happened to Anacin. And then it’s got a thing called “Absurd Encounter with Fear.” And then a kind of montage of these 16mm experimental things with a few pieces from [short films] “The Alphabet” and “The Grandmother.”
[...]
The original episodes of “Rabbits” are on the mystery disc. “On the Air” is not on there, nor is “Hotel Room,” but we’re working on those things. It’s always rights issues.
[...]
The Elephant Man Extras is the story of the Elephant Man and the story of The Elephant Man film itself.

Wild at Heart deleted scenes taken from rare work print, will be interesting to see what the image quality is.

Sure, they can and will continue to create art with or without fans- its in an artist's nature to do so. However, artists that earn a following also earn support from investors, allowing them to create unfettered by limited funds, supplies and resources.
I look forward to seeing (and hearing) the new materials available in the box set, but will have to wait 'til the set becomes more affordable. I am a die-hard Lynch fan, but I am also a Lynch fan on a budget. Bills first, Lynch later!
my 2cents...
Jimmy
