Hey now, I did that an hour ago, but thanks for confirming the choice.

I also put Friday the 13th and Halloween in the proper places, and figured Nosferatu is the best choice for the 1st. There are probably other good choices for specific days if we think hard enough. Are the top finishers from last year even still active? I haven't seen most of them in this thread yet.

I'll be taking this year off from the challenge so if you'd like to give my choice to someone else, feel free.

Pretty good mix of old and new there.

How did I end up before Chad? I thought I finished in tenth place last year.

I don't have a pick yet. Let me think about it for a day or two.

How about a quick vote? Which of the above three should go in? I'm good with all three, but probably prefer the original given this context.

And call me a Creature fan, but how about if I put that back in there if one of the finalists from last year doesn't come forward with their vote in the next few weeks?
I'll vote for The Wolfman on the 14th.

How about putting The Creature From the Black Lagoon in The Invisible Man's slot? (I just watched The Invisible Man and all it's sequels during the SciFi challenge, but I haven't watched The Creature since last October.)

So make some suggestions (that are "somewhat mainstream, or at least easy to find cheaply or rent online"). October 27th is open.

ahhh, that's the kicker... let me mull that over.

The Innocents
Cat People (orginal)
A Tale of Two Sisters
Session 9
The Changeling

don't mind me I'm just throwing titles off of the top of my head.

While The Wolfman seems the most obvious choice, my vote is for The Howling. Of course all three choices are winners in my book.

Don't forget Nosferatu. I'm all for more foreign films - Eyes Without a Face, Ringu, Jigoku, Onibaba, Kwaidan, Faust, Kuroneko, Vampyr,Caligari, Bava, etc. I just figured people were less likely to own these titles than American horror films. I could be wrong.

I think I put everyone in the right order, working down from #1 to #12 or so, skipping myself. Figured I'd give Chad the final pick before Halloween, given that this is his baby.

Completely. It's a general failing in most of our film watching behavior I'm sure. Personally, I'm slowly working myself away from American and modern centrism by getting into the Criterion collection sort of films and realizing all that I've been missing.

We could add Audition, or Ringu for an eastern appearance. Although I proudly admit, in this one case, that I like the American The Ring much more.

But you're one of the horror mainstays! You could always do something simple like joining us on these 31 films on the days that you're free to watch them. No commitment, just pop in and join us from time to time.

A superb film that functions both as scary horror flick and effective political commentary.

I agree, the American remake was improved great.

Pulse - another essential Asian horror film, though, the original is vastly superior.

I'm thinking about trying something different this year, instead of the massive OCD checklist (which you all keep adding to, darn you).

I'm thinking of watching one film from each year since the first horror film, 1896, in chronological order (except for our 31 days list).

There appear to be several early years with no true horror films available, and many of the early ones won't count for length, so I may have to add a few to get to 100.

Any of you want to join me, or perhaps aid me in hunting down the 1897-1920 films?

There are a few horror shorts included in Flicker Alley's Melies box set, which I plan to watch between films:

A Terrible Night (1896)
The Bewitch Inn (1897)
The Devil in a Convent (1899)
The Treasures of Satan (1902)
The Merry Frolics of Satan (1906)

Plus, there is The Student of Prague (1913) and The Golem (1915), as well as Edison's version of Frankenstein (1910), which you can watch on Youtube- Parts 1 and 2.

Here is Wikipedia's (obviously) incomplete list of horror films released before 1920.

Thanks! I found a few of those online last year, and saved them.

Was hoping that Wikipedia would help me more, but, as you saw also, it is quite lacking in the early stuff, even the 1930s have gaps. I'm sure there are dedicated horror sites out there with more complete lists/links.

I thought my collection would be fairly complete from the Universal years onward, but I was wrong. Besides the really early years, I'm missing 1967, 1957, 1950, 1949, 1948, 1947, 1938, and 1937.

I strongly recommend Curse/Night of the Demon for 1957. A Tourneur classic very much in the vein of his best work for Val Lewton. For your 1967 entry, step into the nightmarish world of Coffin Joe with This Night I Will Possess Your Corpse.

Found the former on Netflix, added to queue. No go on the latter there.

In fact, it looks like Netflix has almost no pre-1958 horror, and only one of the 40 years I "need", so they won't be much help to me in this quest.

Though they do have the first Coffin Joe film, At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul (1963), which is only slightly less twisted.

Sans MST3K commentary? That's cruel and unusual punishment.

Awesome pick. I hope the MST3K version counts though.

Manos was recently added to the Internet Archive:
http://www.archive.org/details/Manos-TheHandsOfFate

I'll again put in a general plug for the Internet Archive, which has many classics (Freaks, Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Nosferafu, Carnival of Souls, the original Cat People, others) as well as "classics" like Manos and other un-MSTed fodder, free for download.
