Wow, I never thought we'd get a re-release of Caligula, nevermind a 4 disc version.

Living Dead 07-07-07 04:28 PM

Wow! I didn't think enough people cared about this movie to merit such a large special edition.

One of my favorite reviews ever by Roger Ebert was about this movie: http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/...S/9220301/1023 It's pretty funny just how much he hates it.

To me, Caligula was always an enjoyable trainwreck, like Showgirls, but it is most certainly trash. That said, I'll definitely be picking it up.

marty888 07-07-07 04:40 PM

I can't believe that I'm actually giving consideration to buying this .... so bad it's almost good.

Joe Molotov 07-07-07 04:53 PM

Enough of this Lord of the Rings, Gone With the Wind, and Ben Hur garbage. Finally, a movie worthy of a 4-Disc Special Edition, am I right?

PopcornTreeCt 07-07-07 04:58 PM

I'll pick this up.

NoirFan 07-07-07 05:05 PM

That's four discs too many.

It's the "Rome Burns When I Pee" edition.

DeputyDave 07-07-07 05:35 PM

4 Discs? What could take up 4 discs? I guess they are going to show both the R rated version and the X rated one. It seems almost pointless to put the edited version on a separate disc (or include it at all).

Dayewalker 07-07-07 07:28 PM

Up until this thread I had only heard of this movie through word of mouth and things I had seen on TV. After checking IMDB and reading up on it, I think I will most definitely be picking this up on release day. I'm always up for a trashy movie that the majority of the world seems to hate.

tonyjg 07-07-07 08:04 PM

As long as the DVD picture has been 'cleaned' up - the original release, whilst non-16x9 was incredibly poor.

Oh - and its called the 'Imperial Edition' (there goes your Rome Burns When I Pee" copy)

Sure it's porn, but it's a classic! Remastered and anamorphic, I'm there... The current one is quite poor.

S it's 3 DVDs and 1 CD. The score didn't need to be on there (isn't it mostly classical pieces?), but what's on there to warrant three discs? The film with commentaries is one. They talk about some pre-release version - perhaps by itself on disc two? And the remaining extras on disc three?

cultshock 07-07-07 09:48 PM

Holy crap, I'll be all over this. This film is one of my favourite guilty pleasures, so I'm thrilled to see such a loaded set. I can finally retire my Danish DVD of the film (which I got for dirt cheap).

My thoughts exactly. :rimshot:

DVDsAreMyLIFE 07-08-07 01:15 AM

Is this available for pre-order anywhere else?

tonyjg 07-08-07 02:18 AM

I'm 'amazed' that they would have gotten Malcolm and Helen to do a commentary for this film !!

Imagine both of them doing a 'scene specific' commentary ..... " ok.... thats a **** and they are doing *** over there"

I've never seen it but his review certainly got me interested.

zombeaner 07-08-07 10:14 AM

I'm glad I've held off on this, I was going to buy the Dutch edition, if I recall it was the best one, but this is so much better!

C_Fletch 07-08-07 10:41 AM

"It's the "Rome Burns When I Pee" edition."

That was too funny. Both me & my GF were rolling.

DVDsAreMyLIFE 07-08-07 11:44 AM

I pre-ordered it from TLA, bastards charged my account already, but I know I will forget about it if I didn't pre-order.

Best guess on my part:

Disc 1: One of the "Rated R" versions
Disc 2: "Unrated" (maybe the Bob Guccione) version
Disc 3: Extras
Disc 4: Soundtrack

Fincher Fan 07-08-07 12:34 PM

Damn! Well, I guess if Showgirls can get a Limited Edition anything can!

pro-bassoonist 07-08-07 10:00 PM

Exciting news...as I am a big fan of Mr.Brass. This being said, I would be a bit cautious with this release as TLA have been consistently releasing PAL-ports (a few recent discs that came my way were also non-anamorphic) as of late (Is Penthouse releasing this through TLA...or am I missing something....just a TLA posting??)

I am also curious to see what source is the company using for this "remastered release". The only restored version I am aware of, and this is the best looking print on the market, is the French double disc. No other release has been provided since then...

Devildead has a good review of the French disc and how it compares to the US cut version:

Imperial edition??.....hmmm

Welp, I put my pre-order in and I am way to lazy to cancel it, so come october I will let you know.

movielib 07-08-07 11:37 PM

I'll always wonder how this film would have turned out if it had been made according to Gore Vidal's screenplay instead of Bob Guccione's crap.

No way do I want to own it.

DVD Polizei 07-08-07 11:57 PM

But it has 3 extra discs of flatulent blabber.

tofferman 07-09-07 12:12 AM

I saw this on cable TV in L.A. late night (the cable channel was called "On TV" iirc) back in the early 80's and don't remember much about it. Though it has Malcolm McDowell, as of now, it looks like a rental at best unless I'm convinced otherwise...

DVDsAreMyLIFE 07-09-07 08:09 AM

I guess I am one of the few who rather enjoyed the film. It was definitely not a great film but it was entertaining.

Giggles 07-09-07 08:32 AM

I don't like Caligula much, but anyway it's an event, a phenomenon of cinema, so that alone may be the reason to have it. Although I can't imagine buying Gone with the Wind for example :)

I don't know, if it had Scarlett recieving a "money shot" to the face, or Rhett getting fisted...
I'd buy it ;)

that perked my interest as well, supposedly there was a longer version shown at Cannes, but I think that's just a myth.

It's too bad, but I don't think this new version talks about the controversy and history of the theatrical release of the film, or even how the film became a 'cult' film:

- New York City ticket prices were as expensive as today's prices ($10)
- Boston outright banned it's distribution to any theatre in the city.
- DC's engagement was quite possibly the longest continously running porn film; 5 years !!

It'd also be interesting to hear what all the mudslinging was between Brass and Guccione and how Brass was pretty much was infruriated about the hardcore sex scenes being added to 'his' film.

The Bus 07-09-07 10:35 AM

Had I not had the original version, I probably would pick this up but honestly I don't have any interest in the extras.

islandclaws 07-09-07 11:48 AM

Glad I held off on the previous release. It's something I want, but with all the titles out there it just never got into my hands. At this point it's almost worthless to buy any catalog titles since a newer release is almost a lock for anything.

Wildo1966 07-09-07 01:18 PM

I know it has been many years but isn't Caligula the greek who was the crazy one out of all the legends?

12-41 AD - yup, I'd say that was some years ago.... ;)

too bad more money wasn't available to film some of the supposed grandiose gladiator spectacles - a great excuse to show even more gratuitous blood/gore.

MrE 07-09-07 02:54 PM

Director(s) cut with new CGI and remastered SFX?

Yes and Wal-Mart will have an exclusive bonus DVD with a sing-along for the orgy scene.
