Peter O'Toole is the is the diseased face looking on. The figures are Malcolm McDowell and Teresa Ann Savoy. Mine is South American, but it's entirely in English with just a note at the bottom that it's for "S.A."
For the record, my screen-name is a knock off of the title of Robert Graves' Claudius the God. When Caligula declared himself a god he was at his maddest. |

Courtney Love as Caligula - that I've got to see!
|
For those interested in the HD version, Digital Bits is reporting that:
Image Entertainment also informed us at the show that Caligula will be released in both HD formats later in 2007 or early in 2008, along with additional titles to be named. |
It seems that is now a 3 disc set only. Rumors are that the 4th disc was the movies' soundtrack and Penthouse or Image didn't have all the rights.

For me, no big loss. Hell, I don't even remember what the music was like

http://www.image-entertainment.com/d...roductID=13933 Go on - knock a few $$ off Image !!! |
No big deal about the soundtrack. I wouldn't have touched it anyway. And hopefully they DO knock a bit off the price -- that would be amazing (but unlikely, right?).

Definitely re-thinking this new release of Caligula 3 disc set.
The 1 disc unrated is (currently) around the $14 mark - whilst the 3 disc is around the $28 mark - (the Image website shows a price difference of $20 between the two sets !!). With the running times the same between these two versions - the differences are the 'special features' - making ofs and interviews. For double the current price of the single disc - I think I'll be waiting for further discounting of this set - can't see it being a limited edition. whats everyone elses opinion on the pricing of this new edition ? |
^ I want it but dont want to pay $28 for it. I don't want the 1-disc version though. So I will probably ante up the dough. Good thing is, there isn't a long wait until the November Deep Discount 20% off sale, so that knocks another $5.xx off the price. I think I could part with $23 for the 3-disc set.

DVDBeaver has a review up. There are explicit screenshots, but are blackened out until you mouse over them.

I'm surprised dvdtalk didnt review this fabulous SE with the release date being only a week away.
|
DVDBeaver is unimpressed but they don't compare to the previous DVD which is atricious. Looks much much cleaner and brighter.
|
I don't have the disc with me but from what I see on the screen caps it isn't bad at all. I will buy the rumored Blu-Ray release and will most definitely rent the DVD version to see how it compares to the French disc. I must admit however that the caps seem a bit too dark. I am unsure whether or not this has to do with how they were taken/posted or whether it is the actual print.
Regardless, I think that this SE is good news for those who like the feature. The previous Image/Penthouse release was quite poor. Pro-B |

I had to up the contrast to see said schlongs. Excuse my schlong blindness.
|
Which stores are going to sell this? Best Buy Circuit City, WM. Because of the NC-17/X rating.
|
A little bit 'disappointed' with the DVDBeaver review - then again - they do state that
Apologies if this review is far less detailed than our usual - but like most of the actors involved in Caligula - I just want to move on.... quickly. What are the 'differences' between the two versions - as the pre-release seems to 'lose' what made it notorious in the first place (ie - the hardcore stuff !!) - or is this still in there ?? who's up for a more detailed review ?? :) Malcolm's and Helen's commentaries are seperate - pity as I would have much preferred to have BOTH of them chatting rather than listening to them seperately :) - its not as though one is going to watch the WHOLE 2.5 HR FILM again to listen just to them !!! |
What a dumb ass review - why even bother if he never seen the original dvds transfer?

the inclusion of the 'blocked' explicit pics for the dvd'beaver' review seems to fit the sheer gratiutous nature of the film itself. (munch, munch, munch) |

I'm pretty sure I saw this and the new Chinatown at Best Buy yesterday. Looks like someone might have messed up a bit.
|
Just checked Best Buy's website and they do have it listed. Reminds me when they carried Emanuelle in America not knowing it contained hardcore scenes.

Just checked my local Borders "store inventory" and it was "in stock" for $39.99....This will be a blind buy for me, i dont know if it is worth it to spend $35-$40 on this version...or get the unrated one disc version for $15-$20? |
Surprisingly this is being released on Blu-Ray on Novemeber 4th. It's 2 disc and cost less than the deluxe 3 disc edition.

Probably because not all of the features are being carried over.
quote from thedigitalbits.com we've got art and disc specs for Image Entertainment's Caligula: The Imperial Edition Blu-ray Disc (due 11/4, SRP $29.98)! It will be a 2-disc set, that includes everything that was on the previous Imperial Edition DVD release. Disc One of the Blu-ray will include both the 158-minute uncensored version of the film, as well as the 153-minute alternate edition, with DTS-HD audio. Extras on Disc One will include 3 theatrical trailers, 12 deleted scenes and 3 audio commentary tracks (including Malcolm McDowell, Helen Mirren and Ernest Volkman). Disc Two of the Blu-ray edition will be a standard-definition DVD, that will include all of the Imperial Edition's documentary extras. |
Glad I waited then. Sometimes procrastination pays off.
|
It shapes out to be the ultimate Brass presentation. I don't think that any other film from the director's body of work will ever receive such a lavish treatment.
