Peter O'Toole= One of the all-time greatest Actors in history.

I've never seen Caligula before & I know that both Mr. O'Toole & Mr. McDowell regretted being in this movie but I'm still going to buy it because, 'Me love myself some trainwreckin' movie!'.

I love the review that Mr. Ebert gave it. Makes me want to see it even more. :)

Leon Liew 07-12-07 02:49 AM

I'll stick with the 20th Anniversary Complete,Unedited,Unrated Edition, paying and double dipping just for the 4 disc set with supposedly extras are not my forte.

Gotta be happy with what ya got.To some it might be trashy but hey after all its just a movie its mindless entertainment no need to feel uptight !

jmj713 07-12-07 08:56 AM

Well this is supposed to be restored from original newly found elements.

having read that both the Dutch and French DVD editions used superior film elements that then the R1 edition I'm all for this SE

I guess I'm the only one who's at all excited over the extras, Vidal's script, pictures - the pictorials from the original Penthouse mags are memorable and feature alternate angles/scenes sometimes not scene in the final theatrical cut. McDowell's commentary should be enlightening since he's publicily trashed the film - give an actor an opportunity to air his or her dirty laundry and I bet you're going to hear some revealing 'juicy' ;) background stories.

Is he doing commentaries at all? I heard not he only trashed the film, he abdicated it pretending this film never happened in his career. Or am I wrong?

Buttmunker 07-12-07 11:45 AM

there's nothing like watching Helen Mirren having an orgasm.

I was hoping this 4-disc set would include the unseen by me Sequel. :(

you mean this film? (careful some of the pics near the bottom for similiar titles/dvds might not be worksafe)

CALIGULA 2: THE UNTOLD STORY

well that's what the TLA website states, unless this is just speculative or out right wrong, it's still fascinating.

nearly everyone involved with the movie was ticked off with Guccione: Vidal, Brass, McDowell...

Was Helen Miren nude and did sex scenes in this movie?

Buttmunker 07-12-07 01:23 PM

No, she wasn't nude, but she did sex scenes. With her, you couldn't see her genitals, but you saw the raw sex in her face as she rode an invisible dildo. Very hot.

there was also that threesome that felt terribly abbreviated, which desolved into the notorious lesbian sex scene.

A few notes (assuming nothing has changed since I last spoke with the disc's producer about the project):

There is no "edited version" of the film included in this set; it will contain a new hi-def transfer of the uncut theatrical release version taken from a newly-found interneg (Disc 1) along with a never-before-seen pre-release edit that eliminates the Guccione footage, restructures to film to conform with the shooting script, and contains alternate Brass-filmed footage, different edit rhythms and previously unseen deleted material (Disc 2). The Channel 4 version will not be on the disc, nor will the "R" rated abomination.

As I mentioned in THE LAST HUNTER thread, the Mirren and McDowell commentaries were recorded separately and will be presented as such, over the pre-release version. The Volkman track will be over the theatrical edit. (Volkman was a writer hired by Penthouse to chronicle the making of the film, and was present on set for the majority of the shoot.)

Disc 3 contains the rest of the supplements. There were two Penthouse-produced Making-Of documentaries that appeared on their home video magazine VHS releases as promotion for the film when it was new. One was on the prior DVD release, the other one wasn't. The interview segments are all new and presented separately. Nathaniel Thompson and I took care of the John Steiner (25 minutes) and Lori Wagner (29 minutes) segments, while David Gregory handled the Tinto Brass chat. There's also a ridiculously large stills collection including a ton of behind-the-scenes stuff and shots from never finished segments. I assume the trailers and DVD-Rom material will also be on this disc.

Disc 4 will be a new and improved soundtrack CD, with a ton of never published music and cues.

It's a pretty amazing and comprehensive package, especially for the relatively low price, and really dissects the film and its controversy from several perspectives.

You could see her boobies through see-through robes too.

Only on the second disc. Heh heh.

Dr. Forrester 07-16-07 11:18 AM

No R-rated cut? Restructured to match the shooting script? Newly recorded, screen-specific commentary by McDowell and Mirren?

Well, they can chalk up one sale right here. Flesh Gordon is going to feel a little less lonely on my shelf

There are no doubt people who believe that if this movie is as bad as I say it is, it must be worth seeing.

what was wrong with the original blue cover (shrugs) ??

Technically, the X rating no longer exists and Caligula was probably never re-submitted for an NC-17.

the porn industry just accepted it anyway since the MPAA never trademarked the rating, there's something so appropriately sleazy anyway for a film to just state it's X-rated.

Does the porn industry even use "X" or "XXX" anymore? Frankly, I think a whole generation of movie goers have grown up without the "X" rating.

Why don't you try searching for "XXX" in Google and see what pops up? ;)

so do I and yes, while the transfer's is indeed horrid, the cover at least retains the original one-sheet artwork.

Randy Miller III 07-18-07 08:25 AM

Looks a bit like another recent DVD cover, no?

It sort of does! ;)
I prefer the rated cover to the unrated one.

Can someone please explain the attraction of this movie?

I'm trying not to threadcrap. The movie bored me when I rented it. It's owned by a man who's greatest strength is marketing, so I can understand buying it once, just to see. But I don't understand why so many people like it enough to double-dip.

for me it's the extras, plain and simple. It's a movie that tried to be too many things all at once, a historical drama, with OTT sex and outlandish gore - it's also an excellent example of when a Producer side steped his responsiblities and ultimately became the director. It's a movie where so many things went and did go wrong - it's notoriaty preceeded it and made it a cult favourite - I can't think of a movie of this genre that offended nearly everyone involved. Granted the film get's overblown at times and is unnessarily long at 156 min, it's really not for everyone

jmj713 07-18-07 09:45 AM

I'm most excited about the "new" cut.

grim_tales 07-18-07 10:15 AM

I'm wondering if I should buy it, just to see. But I dont really want to "own it  I saw bits of it on TV and it bored me stupid.

did it play uncut on UK TV?

skywalker8 07-18-07 01:39 PM

The big question for me is: How on earth did they get McDowell and Mirren to do commentaries? Are these full-length commentaries? I'm sure it will be fascinating.

McDowell holds total disdain for this film, that's why I also find it interesting they got him to say anything about this film - I bet it's going to be an utter bashing of the film. I've never read anything in print or online about Mirren's opinions of the final film, that's why I am very interested in hearing her thoughts and comments. To bad, Vidal wasn't allowed to chime in his opinions either, have a three way round table two hour conversation with a moderator, and I bet they'd have rivetting stories.

I think so (well almost). IIRC it was "a revised version that approximated the original Director's Cut".

Other than being fascinated by four-disc sets dedicated to one film, this is the other reason why this is a must-buy for me. I hope the audio commentary is on par with that of Mickey Rooney in his episode of the Twilight Zone ("Last Night of a Jockey" I believe) in the definitive season set of TZ. He comes off as hilariously old, bitter and set in his ways, referring to the episode as nonsense essentially. It has to be heard to be believed. When it's all said and done, I expect this commentary from McDowell to be one for the ages!

I betcha they're gonna be "Interview" commentaries. I'd be surprised as hell if they had to sit down on comment on the Unrated cut.

Then again, they could easily do one for the Rated cut since that one's extremely tame. Has anyone here ever seen that version?

caligulathegod 07-19-07 04:16 AM

I've always liked watching it after I finish "I, Claudius" for a different perspective on the character. Such a twisted film.

I've always preferred the image on the poster I have in my hallway.
